Master 1632 Almost Canada, WA | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Where is everyone? I always feel like I'm behind on things here...I guess being 6 hours behind EST I kind of am, huh?! Anyway, I rode my bike for only the 2nd time tonight and I'm amazed that while you never forget HOW to ride a bike, you (or should I say I?) do forget how to be comfortable on one. It is NOTHING like riding a stationary bike or doing a spinning class! It's been several years since I've even owned a bike so it's actually a bit (and I'm ashamed to admit this) scary to ride on the roads. Is this normal or am I the only one who has already signed up for something that makes riding a bike necessary yet am so not comfortable doing it? |

It's perfectly normal and it is really different from the bikes at the gym because you are having to worry about traffic, dogs, etc. Is there someone you can ride with? Sometimes having another rider along helps. |

Veteran 194 North Central WA | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Here's a question. If you had to come up with a gym substitute for swimming what would it be? Between the limited schedule at my pool and our family schedule I can only swim every other week. I'm a strong swimmer so don't feel the need to go frequently but would like to do something else during the swim time in my plan to maintain some upper body endurance. I've thought of rowing but are there any other ideas out there? L. |

Master 1901 Central, IL | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Interesting.... Other than hitting the weight room - maybe some time on the machines....I can't think of a whole lot. Swimming is pretty specific. BUT you have a good base already...working on your core strength could be a nice substitute. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/core-strength/SM00047

Expert 819 In the Shadow of the Big House | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Shoveled a lot of snow today. About 12 inches fell in 8 hours. I think that qualified as my strength work out for the day. Too scary on the roads to head to the gym for a bike ride which was in my training plan for today. Can't wait for my trainer to get here. (Merry Christmas to me!) Starting a second head cold already this season. Kids keep bringing stuff home from school. Oh well. Got to get some mileage in for my challenge. Treadmill here I come....yay! |

Took an hour, can I count that as a sport?

Sometimes having another rider along helps. Thanks, that makes me feel better. I was actually thinking of finding someone to ride with and since I've been talking tri with my cycling class instructor I was going to ask her tomorrow when/where she rides (especially since she has mentioned that she often rides around here.) I am really suprised that there aren't a whole lot more Hawaii peeps here on BT and if there are, they aren't the talkative type! |

Master 2020 | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Morning everyone… I am traveling this weekend. I have 7 tomorrow. Just going to be an easy spin around a local park. I had a dental emergency. No local dentist will assist. So I am cutting my holiday short and heading back to Chicago tomorrow afternoon. For the folks who were looking into the cleats for running in the snow. Pick up the new copy of runners world. It shows you how to make them yourself using shoes and sheet metal screws. |

Master 1901 Central, IL | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Tip of the Day - try to schedule a race, event, something fitness oriented, every 4 -6 weeks. Great way to stay motivated, make friends, and keep in touch with a positive and healthy community of your peers ('cause BT is great but you gotta get out there and showcase your skilz once-in-awhile).

Master 1901 Central, IL | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL Focus on your consistency -- use your mental energy to get-it-done on the days you don't feel like it... rather than going hard on the days you do feel like it. It is a lot like racing -- we need to moderate during the periods that we feel good and endure in the periods where it is tougher. - from Gordo's Group Wanted to share this....great advice.

Sorry to hear that. If you were nearby I'd help you out. Hate it when colleagues act like that. Gives us all a bad rep. |

Master 1726 Sacramento, California | Subject: RE: Writebrained/JHouse4's 2009 - Newbies Unite Group FULL So I posted this on my blog but I will also post it here because I am so excited SOOO...I am now the proud new owner of a 2008 Trek 2.3 WSD. We are going to pick it up today and pictures will follow shortly! It was a bit of a pain to get the right fit, but I think we finally got it...at least it is comfortable for now...We will have to see how it goes as I get used to riding it. I think bike fit will always be a problem for me because I have a short torso, long legs (but most of that length is hip to knee) and am not incredibly flexible in my back...so I constantly battle making sure I am not: 1.)reaching too far with my upper body or 2.)not pummeling my elbows with my knees. But I think we finally have the right stem on her so that we have a good compromise between the two. Now I have to think of a name...She is black and silver with just a hint of purple...Any suggestions? Edited by kromanowski 2008-12-21 10:51 AM |
