Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WittyCityGirl - 2008-12-28 10:11 AM kenj - 2008-12-28 8:26 AM It was a legit bonk. I set out to run 8.5-9 miles and ran the first 4 amazing and then...it just started getting tougher. I ran out of mojo and everything started to ache and I ended up walking at least 2 of the last few miles to get home. I could pick up the pace and run when I had really good music going on the ipod, but I couldn't even continue through whole songs. My body just said "I'm not up for this today". Oh! Ken! I noticed that you have the same Garmin model that I have. I haven't played with it much because I'm just keeping track of my heart rate on my runs and when I get on the indoor trainer. What all are you using yours for?? What's your fav part of yours?WittyCityGirl - 2008-12-27 7:47 PM I have a 5k race on the 31st... My short term goal should be to start getting back into running. I was up to 8.5-9 mile runs once on the weekends, but after Thanksgiving I bonked ROYALLY and haven't gone over 4.5 miles at a time. That's a great goal! When you say bonked, did you actually bonk on a run or lose motivation to do the longer runs? Either way, we'll help with the encouragement to get you back to where you want to be. I think there is a race series of 10K races in Bingampton or at least there was last winter. Maybe putting one of these on your calender for late January will help with the motivation? I can ask Bob Stocks (rstocks) about them if you are interested, he ran a few of them last year. I love my Garmin! I originally got it for Christmas 2 years ago and would use it to track the distance of my runs. I had just started training for the Chicago marathon that year and it would help track distance and heart rate. I also added the speed and cadence sensor for the bike, but that is on my road bike and I don't ride that very much on the trainer anymore. Since BT added the ability to download workouts from the Garmin I have really enjoyed the lap feature, especially for races. I have it set to auto lap every mile on the run and every 5 miles for the bike. Even inside on the trainer I manually hit the lap feature on the trainer and treadmill to make sure I am hitting my HR targets during the intervals. For the run I have been training by pace rather than HR, but it help me figure out that I need to be at 1.5% incline on the treadmill to match the intensity of running outside. For long races and training I also like the timer alert. Like for Lake Placid I had it set to go off every 15 minutes to remind me to take in some nutrition or make sure I was drinking enough. Unfortunately the battery went dead about half way through the run! This feature may help you as you are building your distance back up on the run to remember to take a gel or you are getting enough liquids. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kenj - 2008-12-29 7:46 AM So, what does everyone have planned for today? My daughter starts a basketball tournament in Springfield, MO today, so we'll be leaving here about 9:15 am. I should be home by 4:00 pm and I'll hit the gym for weights and some type of aerobic workout. The next three days will be full with the commute back and forth to Springfield. I ran a couple of miles yesterday (it's going to take a while to get back into running shape) and got the bike outside for the first time in a couple of months. I flatted and cut the ride short, but it was nice to get back out. |

I asked the locals what there was to do for fun and everyone kept pointing me to the Bass Pro Shop, which we did twice! You'll have to let me know if that is really the only thing to do! |

Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() kenj - 2008-12-30 10:17 AM So how is everyone doing today? Not a lot of conversation here so I am assuming you are all training hard! Sorry I've been a little out of it lately, but I think any fellow pet owners will understand. We had to have our beagle put to sleep on Monday. He was 13 years old and seemed fine, but suddenly got sick. He apparently had pancreatitis, and at his age, his body couldn't handle it, and he developed liver failure. He was in pain, and there was really no hope he would get through this, so we had him put to sleep. It was one of the hardest things I've been through in a long time. We've had him since our children were little, and he was my wife's primary walking/jogging buddy. I guess I'm getting old and sappy, but I still tear up when I talk about him. He was a good dog. The training should pick up one we get through this last holiday wknd. In addition to our sick dog, we've had a lot of family get-togethers, etc. Things should be back to normal next week, and my training log should (and it better) reflect this. Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks to all for your condolences. snaproll - 2008-12-30 7:29 PM What do you guys swim in? Just bumping this question. Any input for me on swimwear? For practice, I swim in Jammers like this: http://www.tyr.com/shop/neptune-splice-jammer-p-731-c-1_2_3_109.htm... For a tri, I have a Zoot trisuit: http://www.sbrshop.com/store/product.php?pyid=atrm-0006&utm_medium=... I'm afraid neither are particularly flattering, but I'm so over that. Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Howard hit it right on the money!!! None of us (men) look good in this stuff, so I just tell my daughter I am doing this to embarrass my kids But the jammers aren't bad to swim in. Happy New Years everyone. New month, new set of goals! For January I am going to run 20 plus every week, and not miss any scheduled bike workouts! I like to keep these under the short term goals on my blog. Just a suggestion! Some of you still haven't posted goals so we can encourage each other along! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree that the results may not be the most flattering but after my last swim of 800 yds in Board Shorts I broke down and bought some jammers. This Swim Outlet site had lots of good prices on swimwear and gear. http://www.swimoutlet.com/Swim_Jammers_s/213.htm |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How's everyone doing today??? I got through the 40 minute run just fine. The swim, not so much. The YMCA pool was terribly congested and my shoulder was bugging me so I got in 1,000 yards. Fine by me. Taking it nice n easy for now. =) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I had a reasonably good day today. The forecast called for it to warm up into the 50's today, clear skies, light winds... so I decided to try to get my century done for January. I didn't want to get too far away from my transportation today, so I decided to ride at Pea Ridge Military Park (http://www.nps.gov/peri/). The park has a 6.2 mile loop that I train on quite a bit, but I've never done 16 laps on it before. It was a casual ride, solo, with stops at 25 / 50 / and 75 miles. I went through 100 miles in 6:06 (16.4 mph) which is a pretty pedestrian pace, but acceptable for me in January. The entire ride was 102 miles with 10,762' of climb. By lap 10 I was pretty brain dead from the loop, but the scenery is nice. There is auto traffic, but it's one way with a 20 MPH speed limit which is enforced for cars and bicycles. Yes, I've had friends get tickets out there. I counted 24 deer and would have gone insane without the iPod shuffle. Regular ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great job and nice pics! Have you ever done the 3 State, 3 Mountain Century in Chatanooga, TN? If not, you might consider it for your May century. I did it in 2007, and it's a great ride. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() y2kdad99 - 2009-01-02 9:13 PM Great job and nice pics! Have you ever done the 3 State, 3 Mountain Century in Chatanooga, TN? If not, you might consider it for your May century. I did it in 2007, and it's a great ride. I haven't but it sounds, er... interesting The mountains increase in difficulty. Suck Creek is long and gentle - around 5 miles at a 4-6% grade. Sand is shorter and slightly steeper - 2.5 miles at a 6-7% grade. Lookout is by far the steepest - 2.3 miles at a 8-10% grade with a 14-17% grade at the top. The total climbing is somewhere between 6000 and 9000 ft. I've come up with over 9000 ft using two different topo software programs but the folks recording it say they only get between 6000 and 8000 ft. 2.3 miles at 10%? That's brutal. I rode a century last year that had a little over a mile of 10% and I wasn't sure I'd make it. But I love the Chattanooga area. I'll look into that for sure. Thanks.Edited by snaproll 2009-01-02 9:41 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone, my first event on New Years Day, Texas Half marathon was great . Field limited to 450 runners. What a great way to start the year! The course is very nice, flat, as you'd expect from Houston, full of trees and nice views. I loved the homes, woods, golf course, lakes, ponds and the native palms! The true treat was the out and back nature (2 loops for half, 4 for full) of the course with everyone having the names printed on their race bibs! You got to greet everybody (it is a small race) making for a very fun day. This year was the year of the bat and in addition to the Texas sized medal (on me), you received a small bat with a tag and number where you finished in the race. Everybody was very friendly, hot pizza after and I plan to make it an annual event. A 10 min PR made it all the better. Edited by wakehr 2009-01-04 1:28 PM |
