Hi Manatees! Here is how you add a team table to your log:

Highlight and CTRL-C (copy) the table from here.

Click on Settings at the top. Then click on Training Log Customization, then click on Goals.

If you want the table to appear in the left side of your log, CTRL-V (paste) it under Short Term Goals. If you want it to appear on the right side of your log, paste it under Long Term Goals.

Yay!  That's great.  I am happy to be in!  I have been keeping a training log at Active.com so I will have to work on bringing a couple weeks over and getting used to a new site.

Thanks for having me.

Hi-I promise I'll post a bio this evening when I get home! Since January, I've been traveling 2 days per week for work. This appears to be the last week I'll have to do this!

For this AM, I got a quick run in from the hotel!!

Hi Bill!

See if I was smart I would just join the gym downtown by work so I could stop there on the way to work with my swim stuff and ride to the pool, swim, clean up, head to work.

Then that would be 3 gyms I belong to - beginning to be as many as bikes that I own and that is not a good thing.

Need to have a family discussion this weekend about the Y - drop it for the summer - drop Snap Fitness because I just am not lifting right now - join pool gym downtown.  Great plan right?

Sounds like a great plan!!

OK, mentors, as you will soon know, I can kill you with questions. Here's my first: If I want to do a few sprints or olys this

summer, along with a 5K or 2, but ultimately race NOLA 70.3 again next spring, what training program should I start? I

was thinking about a winter maintenance plan, and maybe doing each of the focused plans. Then I could move right into

the no-fluff intermediate plan before I start an HIM specific plan. Does that make sense or should I be doing a sprint-oly

plan? Your expert opinion is needed. Thanks!

Oh, and by the way, I'm thinking of maybe doing a mary or half mary in Feb. of next year, too. How will that fit in?

Good Morning!

I was able to get my log up and running last night so now it is time to give my bio.

My legal name is Sharon, but I have always gone by Sharie.   Kind of confusing at times, but don't be alarmed if sometime I sign "Sharon"....it is still me! Wink

My Story:  I have battled against adrenal exhaustion/chronic fatigue for the past 10 years.   There was a time that I was in bed most of the day.   Having always been a very active person, it was SO hard to just lay there.   I would try to do things only to find myself completely exhausted.   There were days when brushing my hair or stirring something in the kitchen took too much effort and I would wind up back in bed.

I was determined  to not let it beat me and since there is not much help from the medical community, I set out on my own to find answers.   It has been an interesting journey of healing - body, mind and soul.   Slowly and surely, I found solutions that worked for me and little by little I regained my strength.    This past summer, I realized that it was now time to do something about my completely out of shape body.   I am not good at just working out for the sake of working out and I am very competitive, so I knew that whatever I chose would have to have some kind of competition involved.   I chose running.   I had been a sprinter way back in high school and always hated long runs, but I found the C25K program and started.  That was in August '08...and there were days when I didn't think I was going to be able to do it.  That first week, I could barely run the 60 sec.!    I stuck with it and ran my first 5K in November.

I will never forget that race.   When they blew the whistle and the pack of runners started...and there I was right in the middle...tears came to my eyes as I thought of how far I had come.  I forced the tears back realizing that I wouldn't be able to breathe if I started crying, but every time I crossed a street where people were waiting to cheer on the racers, my eyes filled up again.    It was an incredible race.   I had set a goal to run it under 35min, which was in keeping with what I was doing at home in training, and I ended up with a time of 30:23!!   My sister-in-law was waiting at the finish line with tears streaming down her cheeks...I crossed the finish line with tears streaming down my cheeks and I was hooked!!

Since that time, I have raced another 5K, as well as joining a running group in a city about an hour north of me.  I ran their winter series of races that started in January - 2m, 5K, 4m, 5m and 10K.   One goal I had for the year was to break 30min in the 5k and I have done that.

I didn't know that I had this hidden desire for triathlons until I started running, but one day I realized that deep inside me I wanted to do one but told myself it would never happen!   Well, I don't listen to that "you can't" voice any more!!  I know I have to try a Tri!!!  I was a competitive swimmer in my younger days so I am not afraid of the water - well, I am not afraid of pools, but open water, well...that might be a different story.    The bike is going to be my biggest challenge!

Family:   I am a 50yo (my b'day was last week) mother of 5 - 23yo son, 19yo son, 17yo son, 14yo daughter, 10yo son, married for 25 years.  I homeschool and we own a beef cattle ranch in SE Wyoming - thus the name 'ranchrunner'.  My dh is a 4th generation rancher, I am a transplant from Tucson, AZ.   We also raise horses and have 5 dogs - only 2 that come in the house, the others are working dogs.

Training and Races:  I did something to my ankle/achilles a few months back and it wasn't getting better so after my 10K race on March 20, I took some time off to let it heal.   I just started back on Monday with a 2.5m run and then did a 4.5m run yesterday.   It didn't swell up, but is very, very stiff today. It could be because I really overdid yesterday...like I mentioned, I am very competitive and this high school runner asked me if I would run with him.  Well, he started 6 miles out, I started 4.25 miles out and his plan was to catch me before we got back to the track.  I just couldn't let him catch me too soon, you know! I know I pushed way past my current conditioning and that really wasn't the best choice.  But he didn't catch me until we were less than a mile away from the finish! Tongue out

I am not sure what to think about my ankle.   My chiropractor says it is nothing to worry about when he adjusted me on Monday.  He said all the muscles my left leg weren't firing properly.   I hope to start swimming, possibly today, and will try to get to a pool 1x/wk.   That is the best I will be able to do until it warms up and the local pools open.   For now, the closest indoor pool is 60miles away.  I need to get some kind of bike, too.   I don't have one but did do some workouts on an exercise bike while in Tucson for 6 wks.   (I posted a thread on Tri Talk about a bike)  Your thoughts on my bike situation would be greatly appreciated.  I have pretty much come to the conclusion that I should just buy a cheap bike at a garage sale or Goodwill until I know if I like riding and Tri's.

I haven't signed up yet, but am targeting a sprint Tri in Cheyenne, WY on June 28th.   Besides that, I will run some other races, but they are yet to be determined.  I was thinking I would probably do a 5K or 10K the first weekend of May in Fort Collins.   I really want to concentrated on my training for the Tri.

Well, that's all for now.   Looking forward to getting to know everyone and share this journey.

Blessings,
Sharie

Beth and Yanti- may I hop over onto this new manatee pod?? I know that I wasn't too terribly active the last go around, especially in the last few weeks, but I've enjoyed learning and drawing strength from the both of you.

A few questions:

I am assuming from looking at the archives that we just keep posting under the same thread the entire 3 months of the mentor group...yes?   If so,  is there somwhere you can mark the thread as "read" so you know where to begin reading on a new day?   I have looked around but haven't found anything.

What are your suggestions for core fitness/strength training?

I already alluded to this in my bio, but what are your thoughts on a bike?  I don't have anything right now and need to get to riding.

Thanks,
Sharie

Blessings,
Sharie

I'm proud to meet you, Sharie. What an inspirational bio! I reallly admire your courage in coming back from such a debilitating condition. -Cathy

Hi Cathy!  We love questions, and sometimes we love to answer questions with questions

Do you have any races picked out at this point?  If not, that would be my first recommendation.  Based on the date of the race, one of us can make a some suggestions on which training plans might make sense.

With regard to the 1/2 Mary in Feb, is it your first (you may have mentioned, but i'm too lazy to go back through all the posts )

I did my first 1/2 at the end of Jan, and started training about 12 weeks before hand - I followed a 1/2 mary training plan (which I would be happy to share)

Cheers!

ranchrunner - 2009-04-09 10:41 AM A few questions:

I am assuming from looking at the archives that we just keep posting under the same thread the entire 3 months of the mentor group...yes?   If so,  is there somwhere you can mark the thread as "read" so you know where to begin reading on a new day?   I have looked around but haven't found anything.

What are your suggestions for core fitness/strength training?

I already alluded to this in my bio, but what are your thoughts on a bike?  I don't have anything right now and need to get to riding.

Thanks,
Sharie

Hi Sharie!

First of all, thanks for the great intro!

With regards to a bike, my suggestion would be to go to you LBS (local bike shop) and talk to them about your goals - i would make some phone calls first and find one that has staff members that actually do tris (i learned this lesson the hard way)

Be sure you get fitted properly for your bike, the extra $$ for a professional bike fit are worth every penny.  If you can't do it right away, then I would highly recommend saving up for it.

Bill - any thoughts on this as our resident cycling expert?

Thanks, Beth! I'm in the process of choosing some tris to do right now.  I'm trying to stay fairly close to home. I've done several half marys and one mary, but not in 5 years or so. But my running base was up to 30 miles a week last summer before I started training for NOLA 70.3. Will let you know about my next tri soon. Cheers to you!

Hi Sharie!  I am in the same boat on the bike thing....I don't have one and have been looking at craigslist locally for one...not much luck so far.

What kind of dogs do you have?  Had to ask cuz I have 7 right now.....6 Aussies and an Italian Greyhound....We do the dog show thing....that's my other expensive time consuming hobby...lol

So I must say I am a little in awe of all of you.....I am just praying I can manage to get to the point where I can actually feel confident I will finish my planned sprint in August.

Holy cow I take 12 hours away from the computer and look what happens - we put up 3 more pages! Way to go us!

The concert last night was awesome ... Gordon Lightfoot can still rock it out, despite his advancing age and recent poor health. Knocked another legend off my must-see list.

But we didn`t get back till just after midnight - which is way late for this girl. Today I`m dragging my patootey, but I am still determined to get myself to the gym for a run and hopefully to a yoga class as well ...

I have a ton of work I need to do for my business, trying to promote promote promote myself to keep my head afloat ... but as important as that is (we don`t want the bank to take the house away;-), training is also a priority. Right - yes. It is.

Hope everyone has a great productive day.

I too have a bike question. I have a hand me down WalMart bike and I don't have any plans to replace it before my tri in August.  It is women's mountain bike. My questions are:

 1) I am curious if its a good fit for me. I can almost (but not quite) touch my toes to the ground when I'm sitting on the bike. I feel okay when I ride it, no knee pains or anything. I'm 5'2" with shortish legs.

2)It has big tread tires on it. Right now I bike 100% on trails, dirt and gravel so I don't want to change them anytime soon. But my triathlon is on a road, would I benefit from switching the tires for thinner, smooth treaded ones? (Sorry, I know zero bike jargon).

Thanks!!

Lauren
