In addition to Grace's question regarding the logs, do any of you create "routes" when logging your bike/runs and have you found the distance reflected in the mapping to be accurate?

Terps421 - 2009-04-14 12:42 PM I am going to purchase clipless pedals after my next tri in 2 weeks.  Any suggestions from you bike experts I would appreciate it?  What do you think of Speedplays's that are easy on/off and allow some movement especially for the knees?  Thanks for any help guys!
Linda

I use Shimano PD-R540 clipless pedals.  They have a decent amount of float.  I looked at buying speedplays but didn't because of complaints of hotspots on the foot from their design/shape (I guess).  I'm happy with my pedals, take a bit of practice since you can only get into them from one side.

I used to do this for runs and some bike rides but it got tiresome very quickly.  I believ it to be accuracte but eventually figured (1) I have an odometer on my bike and (2) I have a RS400 Polar watch with the foot pod (within 2% accuracy) so what do I need to spend all that time clicking on a map to calculate distance.  Its neat but at the end of the day probably not necessary.

Use them all the time, but still use the bike computer for final values, more because I occassionally get lost / take extra turns.

I also use them as much for determining climbing amount as for route length.

We don't have hills worth logging in my part of the Country.

I have uploaded routes using the Garmin feature.  Never created a route though.

I've created routes on the website. It is tiresome at times. Sometimes I've saved the rout, other times, created it and dumped it. I use it pretty much for running in my neighborhood. They seem to have an accurate distance.

Also, I've found that when viewing just the map, there's a possibility for innaccuracy depending on how new the roads are, or the width you see on the map might not be the actual width.  If possible in your area (it's not here), then turn on the "Satellite" button and trace the actual roadways. (when the aerial photos are available, and not the satellite imagery.

And I have a geography undergrad degree.  Making maps is never boring to me.

Do any of y'all own a Garmin 205 or 305?  I have the 305 (4 years now), and hands down the best training investment I have ever made.  Course, distance, pace, HR (305), elevation, + more... you can get it for about $169 these days.  Just a thought!

NAME: Phil (philz1982)

STORY:  I am former navy (now I work in construction) I was very inactive in highschool and college I joined the Navy to be a Seal, I went into seal training and quit when I found out my wife was preganant. I gained weight from 170 to 240 from just eating bad and being lazy. I now am very tired of being tired all the time and being unable to run faster then a 10 minute mile when i used to be able to run 6 minute miles. I also hate how disgustingly out of shape I look.

FAMILY STATUS: Married (2 kids - 1 & 3)

CURRENT TRAINING: I am training for a sprint triathalon on May 30th and a Olympic in Septemeber. I am following the 3x Balanced 20 week sprint and then will be doing the 3x balanced 20 week olympic although I may do the 2x to save on time. I am supplementing with high rep calisthenics  workouts.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I completed my first triathalon which was a sprint back on Mar 1st.

WEIGHTLOSS: I have so far lost 15 lbs from 240 to 225. I need to drop 45 lbs to be at my goal weight of 180 lbs and I am currently at 225 lbs.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:  I am very open to advice, I have a active background, and I want to get back in good shape and challenge myself.

Holy crap... I am out numbered now... two Navy guys!  I'll just leave it at that...lol!   I have several friends who are Seals, up in rank now(E-7 and E-8)... and other Seals I trained with from SBU-22 when I was in the reserves.  Hard Chargers!

Keep your mind right Philz and you will be at your goal weight and crushin' some sub 7 miles in due time!  Losing the weight made all the difference for me!  Good luck & stay focused ~ it's yours for the taking!

Phil,

Beyond the Navy background you and I have a lot in common.  It was when I finally was tired of how I looked (with some healthy cajoling from good friends at work) that I finally got my a$$ in gear and started trying to get back in shape.  Still not at my target but close and feel a lot better about myself.  No one really wants to be a slouch!  Awesome job getting back in the fight and looking forward to supporting one another.

Regarding the Navy vs. the Marines, I learned my lesson years ago as a young officer.  I said (in jest) to a more senior enlisted Marine, "Just don't forget that the Marine's are a part of the Navy."  To which he replied, "yeah, the men's club."  All the respect in the world for the Marines.  Found out my daughter's principal in middle school (she starts next year) is an ex-Marine.  Already I have more respect for him.  Hooya!

I respect all my fellow triathletes, for having the gumption to take on the challenge of Triathlons!  Equally, I respect all my brothers & sisters that serve this great nation ~ regardless of the branch of service they choose.  I do hold near and dear to my heart ~ for obvious reasons ~ fellow Marines.  But we are all on the same team!  However, a little sibling rivalry never hurt anyone!

I am excited for all of our group members!  I like to see everyone grow, succeed, reach their goals, and cross that finish line... no matter if it's an Ironman or a Super Sprint!

This will be a great Tri season!

How about a little love for us army guys????  OK, not love really....actually some of my best friends while I was in the army were navy guys.  They came to our school for Med equipment training and they ended up stationed in Corpus while I was in San Antonio.  Spent at least once a month down in Corpus with them.  I also have a lot of respect and admiration for fellow veterans, reservists, and active duty alike.  I wish everyone would realize how important they really are.  Anyway, off my soapbox!!!  You'll be able to drop the weight if you stick to a good diet, I mean good food not "diet" in the traditional sense of the word.  I went from 250 to 186 in a little over a year and I was unable to work out at all for 3 months due to a blown out knee.

Swam today.  The coach has me turning on every stroke more and I admit it, it feels right.  I'm still a little labored with bilateral breathing but that is coming too.  Confidence that I can take two breaths in a row on the same side if I need and the world won't end.

Ran last night.  6 miles of intervals with the club.  Still can't say I like running but don't mind it any more at all.  I love what it's done for my figure   Cross training rocks.  Still a 36, but still losing.

Bike is going well.  I do intense drills Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday, a long aerobic ride of on Sunday and a short ride on Mondays and Wednesdays.

There you have it.  Iceman in a nutshell.

I still am not where I need to be with my focus I was working out in the morning for a while but now I sleep in until 6 and usually workout at lunch or during the afternoon. Ideally, I need to get to where I do cardio in the AM and then do my PT after work. Also my diet needs minor fine tuning and then I need to achieve constincy with my workouts. It will be much easier next season as my son will be 2 and sleeping but until then I am just building a endurance base and learning how to race.

Completely understand about the difficulty in finding time to workout.  My youngest turns two this Sunday and she still does not sleep through the night, plus the other two routinely wake up before six am, so working out in the morning is not an option.  The only time as of now, that I have is during the night hours.  My wife's work schedule changes next week, so I'm hoping to find time some more time in the morning after the kids have left for school/daycare.  Hang in there and keep at it when you can.

Either of you guys own a bike trainer?

I've got two boys (8 and 6) every evening while my wife works.  The trainer has proven invaluable.

Sure you may have to dismount every now and then to take care (or in my case discipline or separate), but it's been the best training investment I've made (excluding the mandatory items).

Plenty of "man-love" for ya Dew!  Easy now, don't get any ideas!  I am secure in my manhood! lol!

Great seesions Scott!  A swim coach is one of the best ways to get stronger, faster and more confident in the water.  I never had a problem swimming, I just wasn't fast... swim coach, technique training has certainly helped me improve that aspect of my swim.  Faster with less effort!

Balancing Tri-training, work, family, and other distractions is a challenge for us all.  It is what it is... just try to stay positive about it, get quality sessions in when you can and don't give up on it.  It will come around!

Changing how, what and when we eat is a huge challenge.  I like that you used diet as in the nutrition you provide your body and not a "diet"... You will NOT be succesful in keeping weight off and staying healthy if you choose to "DIET".  No one puts weight on overnight, so don't expect to lose weight overnight either.  Two pounds a week of loss is a good average, and will help you keep it off in the long term.  For those needing / wanting to lose weight... stay focused, be consistent, and know that you can do this!  We are or will be TRIATHLETES damn it!  We can accomplish anything we put our obsessive - compulsive minds to!
