I use power gels if I'm going longer than an hour during a run,  or after about 90 minutes on the bike.  I find it makes a big difference in my energy level and in the prevention of cramps.  I have to use gels and water.  I haven't yet found a powdered drink mix that I like.

Aaron ~ You mentioned leaving the nitty gritty to our blogs...does that mean you would prefer we not chit chat on here as I can be quite the chatterbox and don't want to annoy the crap out of you!

As for your comment about the HR ~ I was a bit confused but then again, that's not hard to do.  The spike you were referring to, is that just from starting to run at a "comfortable hard" pace, as you put it?  Basically starting slow then settling into your race pace?  (Am I making sense now?)

Oh, chit chat away here.  But with 15 people in a group all posting what they're training plan is every day, it gets a bit hectic.

The spike in HR is going from standing at the start line to running.  If you haven't warmed up and are suddently running at a hard pace, that's a huge jump.  Your HR my go from 90 to 160.  That a huge difference and your body will feel the difference for a while.  If you've warmed up right before the start so your HR is at 120 than going to 160 doesn't feel so bad.

You're more comfortable going that same effort so you hold it for longer and even push yourself harder as the race goes on.

Thanks for the clarification~I'm a bit blonde at times!

AdaBug - 2009-04-16 1:24 PM okay, so how do i put this fantabulous chart into my training blog?

I haz not the skillz either.

Does anyone know how to make the code show up rather then the table so I can post it?

I haven't tried to post this one yet but normally if you click on the image above, hit Ctrl-C then you can paste (Ctrl-V) it into your goals section.  I would love to be able to touch it up some but unfortunately I know nothing about creating cool things like this!

jdwright56 - 2009-04-16 2:22 PM Hi Gang - Unfortunately, I am going to have to leave this group as I am leaving BT completely.  I hope you all do well this season and in your lives.
Please remember to fill out your organ donor cards.

Everything ok John?

I forgot to mention GU2O - I really like that in leiu of gu's because it's a drink mix so I don't have to worry about drinking water with it. It's also one of the very few products my stomach can handle during a run. I like Nu'un tablets for shorter but hot runs because it replaces electrolytes without any calories. Very important during those Texas summer sweatfests

John - I hope everything is ok. I think you've got us all worried with your last post.

Here's the thread.  Very hard to believe a sponsor would pull out over this.

Has anyone tried to search and find the thread he's referring to?  I'm very curious what BT'r could cause this kind of chain of events.  And I'd also like to know which sponsor we should be writing emails to.

I think I found it...

Is that really what the drama was all about?  It is hard to believe that a sponsor would pull out for that reason alone.  Seems pretty harmless to me.
If the sponsor was really "cruising the forums" I would think that they would have noticed a lot more positive/dedicated posts on which to base their assumptions as to the worthiness of John's cause.

Edit:  Anyone know how to contact John to find out more about the sponsor and how to help him get them reinstated?

I even read that post yesterday - I had no idea that was the cause of him leaving! If anyone finds out the sponsor, I'd be happy to write an email to them.

One area I would like to concentrate on more is nutrition.  Aaron, I see you regularly post daily caloric targets.  Could you give me a little advice on how to come up with these numbers?  I have a tanita scale that gives a BMR number, but I'm not sure what I should be targeting for total calories in a day.

Thanks!

I have a question for our fearless leader! Many of the training plans that I pick are based off of my schedule with work and family. The plans have always seemed to work but many of them are "lower tier" plans that don't give any information other than minimum time requirement, such as run for 32 minutes or bike for 1:15. I have used other plans that give much more detailed information about what should be done within those time frames. Is there anyway to fill in the gaps? How would I go about doing that? I know that mindlessly running or biking for those times is better than nothing but I also know that it leaves a lot out. Any tips and/or ideas you have on that would be very helpful. Thanks.

John is on Facebook if you want to get in touch.  We exchanged notes this morning.  I asked him who the sponsor was, but he avoided that question!  He also mentioned that now the board of his charity is considering removing him after losing the 10k.  That really seems outrageous.  He has always been very committed to raising awareness for transplants, and his training has also been excellent.  He even had to rushed to the hospital this past fall, but he hasn't let that hold him back.

Here's his website - http://www.triathlonsfortransplants.com/

His email address is listed in his profile, so I'll put it here - [email protected]

This week turned out to be pretty good for me.  The highlight was definitely the sun coming out the last couple days and getting in a nice ride at lunch today.

I still need to get in a long run this weekend, so that will probably be all the training I do the next couple days.

Next week I'm planning on finally getting going on the swimming again and maintaining the bike and run.  So my goal next week will be 3 sessions of each.

Aaaah...when I looked yesterday there wasn't anything posted yet ~ thanks!

I have to agree with you all that the posts seemed harmless ~ if someone is able to get in touch with him will you keep us posted?!  I pray that this works out for him!!!

So my first triathlon ever will most likely be changed to a duathlon due to the dang jelly fish invasion (the tri was timed just in time for the jellys to come in after the full moon.)  My question is...do I start concentrating more on the du events then get back into a more tri focused program (swim which, surprise surprise,  is my weak event)?  I don't doubt that I can do the du since it will be all short distances but I'd like to be somewhat competitive.  My tri-turned-duathlon is May 17th which means my next scheduled tri will be June 7th.
