Veteran 221 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Hey everyone! Checking in from Colorado Springs/Little Rock, AR. In AR for the next five months and then back to Colorado Springs where I live. I signed up for FL70.3 last week and I'm so excited. Haven't done tri's in 5 years and stoked to be coming back. Never done this distance, only a few sprints back in the day. I'm gonna try the half iron program on here, but I might tweak it a little since my running is weakest. My strengths go Bike, Swim, Run. I'm just not exactly sure what to do for the next 16 wks until the program starts. Don't want to get burned out. Speaking of burning, the heat is going to flat out KILL me on the run for this race. Hopefully my altitude acclimation will temper that and even it out a little. Maybe I'll go run on the treadmill at the local indoor pool where the temp is around 80 and humid. Anyways, looking forward to keeping up with everyone and maybe meeting a few of you come May! |

New user 1 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Hi All, I'm coming all the way from Ireland to try this race as part of my training for IM Austria! I'm doing the Don Fink Iron Fit plan. Florida happens a week later than recommended but I hope that's not too much of a problem. I'm staying at a friends holiday home only 20mins from the race. If anyone is really stuck then there are a couple of spare rooms!! I'm arriving on the 10th, so if any group rides/swims/runs organised, I would be very interested. Good luck to you all Dan |

Veteran 167 Grosse Pointe Woods, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Welcome busflyer and saraswhere!! Sara, last fall I found a weight lifting for triathletes program that I did for 3 months, I think it might have been from this website. It focused on (what else) your swim-bike-run muscle groups. Or you could do P90x. I am doing that now and I am going to add it into the HIM training when I start that in January. Edited by guppie 2009-08-23 12:04 PM |

Will do! I'll be back in February by the latest. Unfortunately I don't have much experience training in Colorado, maybe you know some better places than me. I can also come up to Littleton and do some training too. Hopefully I'll be in better shape by then! |

I'm from the Chicago area and I really look forward to being part of this thread for the next nine months. It will be great to get to know everyone before the race and hopefully we can get together once we are all there. I'd be open to the dinner thing that was mentioned earlier on as well. I'm going to be staying somewhere on Disney property, probably at the Beach Club. |

Veteran 167 Grosse Pointe Woods, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Hey guys, what is everyone up to? We need to give this thread a bump every once and a while!! What does every one have planned till 70.3 training starts? I am training for a half-marathon now (5 weeks away) then I'm not sure what I am going to do. I think I will go back to weight training for a while and maybe work on improving my run times. Oh yea...and I will start a spinning class...I guess....(I am really not a fan of the bike, too bad it is 80% of the 70.3 miles of a HIM!) |

Regular 89 Kansas City | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Hey I just got done doing Bike MS this past weekend and rode 100 miles the first day and about 45 the second. It was the first time I rode as part of a peloton and rode much much faster than I ever have and burned my legs for a good portion of it. I've also been doing P90X for a few weeks now and enjoying the results there. I'm planning on trying to find a swim coach or something to help me out. I was able to find a lake in my area that was free and was able to finally practice OWS and had a buddy of mine push me around the whole time I swim which is pretty helpful. Cheers |

Veteran 271 Rocky Mountains | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread Just finished a HIM Aquabike last weekend. Treated the bike like a full on TT to gauge how much more T.I.T.S(Time in the saddle) I will need base wise and still be able to run. Lucky me that running is my worst event. At least it's trail running Taking 2 full weeks off, and will start the training for Florida. Plan on a winter distance run series here in Co, Dec is a 5k, Jan is a 5 mile, and then a 10 mile in Feb. Will start Masters in 2 weeks too. Gotta love living in Colorado when the Masters Swim coach is Susan Williams.(04 Tri Olympic Medalist) As I get the ship rolling, try to stay healthy, no off season injuries, and most important...have fun!

Veteran 167 Grosse Pointe Woods, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread I just finished P90x, loved it! I have to admit the last 4 weeks I haven't 'brought it' like I should have to my P90x workouts because I started my half-mary program and I 'left it' at those workouts where I did 'bring it' so I guess it is good that I 'brought it' to something at least and maybe someday I will have enough to 'bring it' and 'leave (some of) it' and still have enough of 'it' left so that I can 'bring (some more of) it' to the next work out!!I want to do a century ride some time this fall, too. That will be (mental) preparation for a full IM, someday. I had planned on doing a full mary this fall, but I got caught up in the P90x thing over the summer and wasn't sure if I would have enough of 'it' (see paragraph above) for a full.Did 10 mile run this am, it felt gooood |

Veteran 167 Grosse Pointe Woods, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread I wore a one-piece last year. The advantage is it was perfect to swim in (definitely no wet suits for this race) but it was a little difficult to use the porto-john. I don't know if the one vs two piece thing would really make much difference as far as heat goes. And guys, fyi - there was some rule about bare chests, in other words you HAD to have some kind of shirt on for the bike and the run. (I guess that would apply to the ladies, too but I don't think anyone made an issue out of it!) |

I also work for Disney so I'm happy to be a resource for that as well. Theresa |

Veteran 167 Grosse Pointe Woods, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread danap - 2009-09-27 7:28 AMHi,How are the hills on the bike portion? As I recall, the bike course is pretty flat. There was a lot on main roads that had been blocked off for us. There was a short (?) part where there was some construction and we had minimal space that we had to share with cars. Then there was a long flat part and you come around this curve and think, "cool, I can cruise this" then this H#LL of a head wind and cross wind hits you and BAM, you are moving in slow motion (I think this was at like mile 45). I thought the bike course was one of the prettiest I had ever been on (comparing only to Michigan courses). The three best scenes (in no particular order) 1) vultures eating deer carrion (it was like the Discovery Channel, interesting, not gross) 2) a very large member of Florida's Sheriff Department at one of the intersections directing traffic and cheering for us with loud "Wooopp woopps" (think 250 lb Arsenio Hall) and shouting "Keep going baby, keep going...you like it, I love it!!" and 3) the muscular arms on the guys in aero who were on the returning leg of the bike course (I'm a sucker for a nice pair of arms)I actually enjoyed the bike, and its a good thing, because then there was....THE RUN.... |

Member 18 GA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread I've heard that the run is....awful! Is it true that part of the course is through a swamp? I'm trying to decide between Florida 70.3 or Augusta for next year. |

Veteran 167 Grosse Pointe Woods, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Florida : Official Thread The run was hot and long (gee, maybe 13.1 miles or so). There were some complaints about the course, but to be honest it was Florida, it was upper eighties, I'm not sure how much of the difficulty was course related. I don't remember a swamp specifically, maybe you are speaking of the Grasslands. Most of the run is down and back some type of unpaved (as in just dirt and grass) access road that is dusty and uneven. I will repeat the advice I got for the run: 1) wear shoes you won't mind throwing away after, they will be dirty beyond recognition and 2) save your sponge Seitz1124, now that we have a Disney connection, maybe you could work some kind of magic and see what they could do about a better run course. |
