Rockey Raccoon 50K.   They haven't updated the web page yet but I spoke to the director and it will be November 6th this year.  There is also a 50 & 100 Mile event of the same name at the same park in February but I'll wait another year before I bite off the 50 mi monster.  Here is the link.

Wow!  That picture of the single track looks beautiful.  Is the whole course in the canopy?  I couldn't find the elevation profile for the course.

Good luck this weekend before I forget.  We'll be waiting for a race report!

You're riding Cat 2 right?  Looks like the trail got some good reviews on MTBR.  Pretty cool that it is on an island in the middle of the Mississippi!

Yes most of it is in the Pine woods some of it is open along the dam trail that crosses the lake.  As far as elevation change it is fairly flat a few small hills but non to bad.  Lots of tree roots so plenty of tripping hazards.  I'm looking forward to the race it should be fun.  I'm headead out tomorrow arond mid day so I'll be back Saturday evening.

LOL...you're making me feel like I suck!!  I just started this racing thing last season.  I did a couple of the WORS series and a lot of trail riding with friends.  I placed really bad in the races.  I'm sticking with Novice or Citizen class until I start placing better to keep from getting discouraged.  I gained a lot of fitness over the winter with computrainer classes and weight loss.  I'm hoping that has already bumped me into the next category.  However, part of MTB racing is technical skill which I need to work on.  So I'm staying in that low category for even though my fitness may be there.  Novice or Citizen would equate to maybe cat 4 or 5 I guess depending on what series you race.

The course is just ok to be honest.  I haven't ridden it, but I went to watch last year.  It's mainly rocky and flat.  Nothing compared to the elevation profiles you see at WORS races.  This is a warmup for me.  I'll probably do 4-5 WORS races this season starting with Iola bump and jump on May 2.

brick94513 - 2010-04-08 8:10 AM David, TBF Racing puts on some great events.  I missed Xterra Folsom due to work.  But, I did ride the off-road duathlon in March.  Great times!  Are you planning on some of the practice tris they hold.  They also have quite a few Oly distance races.

I will probably make a couple practices, couple olys, and the MTB 50 miler.

I'm pretty far away from them, I don't think I'll be making any of the practice events.  I wanted to do the new years du, and would like to do some MTB racing with them, but timing hasn't worked out.  I'll for sure be out at Rancho Seco for their summer events, I haven't decided whether I'll do the sprint or oly distances yet.

I have my eye on the 50 miler, I'd love to do that, but I'm nowhere near capable of that kind of mileage right now...

What do you hope to gain from the Mentor Group?

I was in a winter mentor group, and really liked having a group with common goals.  Meaning, in real life I don't really have anyone to talk tri with.  It's fun to check out other folks logs, and to know others are checking out mine.  I suppose it shouldn't matter, but it sometimes does help get out the door on days I don't wanna go knowing that my web buds are going to be watching...

Looking for good tips, answers to questions I didn't even know I had, and help setting up training plans.  Mostly just looking for some fun though.

David -  How long have you been in Novato?  I used to run the Fire Station on the flightline and fly medevac out of Hamilton Army Airfield when it was open.  Back then I rode for Sammy Hagar’s Red Rocker Team in Sausalito and loved bombing singletrack all over Mt Tam.  Whenever I visit I still enjoy running the trails behind IVC.  Next time I’m up we’ll have to grab a run (or ride) and a beer.

we moved up here in 1998, but I didn't get back on the mountain bike until about 2 years ago.  Prior to that, I did most of my mtbing while living in San Luis Obispo in the 90's.  I took a hiatus from riding (and most any form of excercise) from about 98-07.

Right now I'm doing most of my mtbing at China Camp and Tamarancho.  I swim at IVC, and run up there a bit, but I've never biked any trails in that area, or on mt. Tam.  I think most of the single track stuff in Marin is all closed to bikes these days, it's quite the land use battle up here...

Not my intention at all.  I thought you were vacilating between riding Cat 2 or 3?  I was just trying to nudge you into the higher class!  Just remember, the only thing your racing against is the clock regardless of what category you ride!  Go out and try to make it your personal best.

I'm not aware of a 4 or 5.  The only categories I"m familar with are pro, cat 1, cat 2, and cat 3.

Do you know anything about the Boy Scout Camp in Marin for riding?  Apparently, you can purchase a pass from a LBS to ride the trails on their private property.

Yeah, that's Tamarancho.  It's by far the best single track around here (that's legal, anyway).  It's a bit of a distance from my house, and then a fairly long road hill climb to the trailhead from the parking area, so unless I have a solid 4 hours of time avaliable I generally won't go there.

I'm already in trouble, I missed my workout today.  Bad start for me with the group!  My daughter had a dr. appt this morning at 9am, then another at 1pm.  We didn't get home from the hospital till 5pm!  Lots of tests, poking, prodding, scanning, at one point, we waited in the dr's office for 2 hours just waiting for her to show up...  Anyway, good news all around on the medical front, but a very exhausting day.  Then we got home just in time to change and head out to a 5:30 softball game (I coach my girls' team, they are 6 and 8 years old).  Follow that with going out to dinner with my in-laws (who are staying at our house for a few days), and I'm ready for bed.

You're right.  I guess I'm used to calling them pro, elite, sport, citizen.  I'm racing citizen, which I guess is cat 3 according to USA Cycling.  I was below mid pack in my first race last season.  The second I was pretty solid and hanging above mid pack when a course volunteer steered us off course.  Long story short I lost 15 minutes on a trail that wasn't on the course along with 10-15 others that got steered in the same direction.  when we finally got back on course it was an intersection at the bottom of a downhill.  The guy in front of me decided to stop at the bottom of the hill.  I couldn't stop and tucked the front end avoiding him.  Unfortunately, my shoe didn't unclip and my ankle immediately blew up to the size of a baseball.  Pretty much ended my day.  I'm actually in better form now then I was then.  I'll report back tomorrow after I do an FTP test on the computrainer.

Brick94513, have you done an Xterra?  I don't really have a lot of friends into tri's, especially Xterra's, so I may have some questions.

nah, I'm not discouraged.  I miss days every once in a while, that's the way it is.  My schedule is very unpredictable, it's hard to really plan out when I'll train.  Last year at this time I was working out exactly zero hours/week.  Now I feel a bit bummed if I don't hit 6 hours/week.  Things are moving in the right direction!  I'm going to get in a long bike/run today.

Brick94513, have you done an Xterra?  I don't really have a lot of friends into tri's, especially Xterra's, so I may have some questions.

Yes.  XTERRAs are my main tri passion!  This year I'll be racing at Livermore, Tahoe City, Incline Village, Snow Valley, and possibly Las Vegas.  I'll be trying to secure a Western Regional spot for Nationals in Park City, UT.  You are awarded points by AG finishes and use your three best races.  I believe the top 10 for the region get spots for Nationals.

Whats on your mind?

We should meet at Tamarancho some time.  It's about an hour and a half from me.

Hey guy! I want in! my name is Gavin and I'm from upstate NY.  I'm 24 years.  My athletic back round is mostly in Wrestling.  I wrestled in high school and at the division 3 college level.  I have zero backround in distance sports but I feel as though I am in pretty good shape. I am 5.10 and 157lbs during college when I was in the peak of wrestling training weighted about 145-147lbs of course they asked me to wrestle at 141 so I had to loss weight in unhealthy ways but thats part of the sport.
Currently I have been wrestling with a club team and I consider myself in fairly good shape.   I have ran in a couple of 10ks in the years past,  which I finished in the 40min range but other then that I need to start from the beginning.   I know how to ride a bike and I've always been a strong swimmer but as far as the proper technique and stuff like that I am a total newbie! I could use all the advice I can get on training, gear, nutrition,...ect.  I'm not even sure where to start.  Also I am currently unemployed so money is tight (yes I live at home) I have applied to dental schools but did not get in this year so I am taking some extra classes and trying again for 2011.
My motivation for attempting a triathlon stems from my competitive nature and a desire to get back into an intensive training regiment, and nothing sounds better then "yeah I do triathlons!"  I am ready and committed to give this my all.  I am attempting to get a road bike from a friend for just a couple hundred bucks. I should be ready to start one of the training regimes from this website next week.  I want to sign up for the silver membership and get things all organized and ready to roll! any suggestions as to where to a good training program?

Thanks for the help!
Gavin

Brick94513, have you done an Xterra?  I don't really have a lot of friends into tri's, especially Xterra's, so I may have some questions.

Yes.  XTERRAs are my main tri passion!  This year I'll be racing at Livermore, Tahoe City, Incline Village, Snow Valley, and possibly Las Vegas.  I'll be trying to secure a Western Regional spot for Nationals in Park City, UT.  You are awarded points by AG finishes and use your three best races.  I believe the top 10 for the region get spots for Nationals.

Whats on your mind?

LOL....I wish I knew where to start.
Do I need some sort of bike stand for transition area?
Should I wear my regular running shoes for the trail run, or be looking for trail shoes?
Where should I be taking my gels?  where should I be hydrating most?
Should I go with my camelback over water bottles like I would in a MTB race?
Are there any transition tricks I should know about?
Do you have any advice about staying focussed on the run so I don't re-sprain an ankle in the trail?

I'm sure there will be more.  I'm pretty nervous, being this is my first outdoor tri and it's an Xterra.

btw....I'm a Vegas regular.  I've been trying to make the Vegas Xterra Happen since I'll be there around that time for vacation anyway.  So far, not so good though.  LOL

Hi guys, I'd like to join the group as well.  I'm just getting into the sport and am looking for some training feedback and hand-me-down experience.  And I see somebody here like's Murphys, that's my beer too!

NAME: Jay

STORY: I think I am addicted to endurance challenges.  I live in middle socal, am in the military and have a running background.  I am a gear queer, and triathlon seems the logical next step to go to.  I have little to no experience in cycling or swimming, so I will ask lots of 'dumb questions'!

Ultimately I would like to get to what I consider the epitome of 'in shape' for me, and LIVE a healthy life to a ripe old age.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, 1 child.  My wife is my training partner

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm down w/ a cold this week, but will start the 16 week BT plan w/ swim focus next week (hopefully).

THIS YEAR'S RACES: Just finished the Agoura Hills 1/2 marathon a couple weeks ago, my goal race is a sprint tri on camp pendleton in August.  I'm looking at a couple super-sprints to do while training to get some OW experience and transition dos/donts.

2009 RACES:  No tris, but I ran some 10ks a 1/2 marathon and a 50k ultra at altitude.

WEIGHTLOSS:  My wife would certainly love to see my 6-pack!

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD GROUP MEMBER: I like being part of a group, and having a responsibility to post online also keeps me motivated to get out and train.

Gavitron - 2010-04-09 8:02 AM Hey guy! I want in! my name is Gavin and I'm from upstate NY.

Gavin

Hi Gavin, welcome to BT and the world of triathlons!

As for training programs, you first need to decide what distance triathlon that you want to attmept.  There are basically four distances: sprint, olympic, half-Ironman (HIM), and Ironman (IM).  As you have already discovered, there are many generic programs suited to each of these distances, varying traning length to date, and current fitness level.

I don't follow one of these plans per se.  Instead, due to a variety in my racing, I'm prefer to use weekly-monthly target volumes.  I feel this allows me to engage in training more suited to my upcoming event since not only am I doing tris, but xc racing, and running.
