Extreme Veteran 717 Chicago | Subject: RE: TriAya (Yanti) and lmscozz (Lynn), Manatee Mentors--OPEN I think I am going to go swimming tonight after work. It was basically 70-80 degrees last weekend and today it may snow. But this weekend it's supposed to be back in the 60-70s so that will be good time for outdoor run and bike. Plus I really need to hit the pool again. |

My name is Kerry and until I get the thumbs up, I won't reveal my bra size LOL! And, for everyone's sake, probably not after I get the thumbs up either |

Welcome, Kerry! I love the word "grody". It reminds me of the EVER FUN '80s. What were your events in swimming? |

Regular 83 | Subject: RE: TriAya (Yanti) and lmscozz (Lynn), Manatee Mentors--OPEN 100 fly was my favorite, 400 IM was what I did best in... which is amazing because I practically go backwards whilst doing the breast stroke (insert offensive pun here). I used to lifeguard tri's when I was a teen and would laugh at the swimmers. I hope that Karma doesn't catch up with me. I am REALLY looking forward to this group. Glad I found an open one with such fun members! |

Extreme Veteran 717 Chicago | Subject: RE: TriAya (Yanti) and lmscozz (Lynn), Manatee Mentors--OPEN I love the DC/VA/MD area. I used to vacation a lot south of VA Beach back in the day and I still really like that part of the country. Unfortunately though I am in Chicago now but I do like it here a lot. It's just further away from the beaches though and Lake Michigan does not compare I have been thinking about travelling for a tri this summer and making a mini-vacation out of it. Maybe I should look into one in MD/VA. |

That's fine! As long as you're ready for the traditional token Manatee Male initiation rite. Last season we had a token male, but all the seasons before were pretty gender-balanced. |

I like having a woman's perspective quite often as well. Maybe we should close this thread before your bra size discussion draws unneccesary attention Look, and I don't know how this happens, because it happened plenty even before I had the current avatar, but many of the threads I participate in--including some really serious ones in Triathlon Talk!--turned quickly to boobies!!! In this case, it is CLEARLY DJ's fault. :D There have been many conjectures on my bra size, but I like to retain a little mystery. Oh, except in threads about sports bras, where the recitation of figures and sizes looks like an accountant's sheet. Since I started endurance athletics, I live for the day when I find a sports bra that keeps the puppies immobile, a pair of running shoes that actually fits, and some shorts that don't ride up my butt. Time to introduce a VERY important piece of BT parlance: the Melon Press. Otherwise known as a hug. I still plead mystery and ignorance as to its origins, but see, there was this challenge team called the Horny Melons that I was a part of ... |

Extreme Veteran 453 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: TriAya (Yanti) and lmscozz (Lynn), Manatee Mentors--OPEN OK so about me. I am 38 , married for almost 12 years and have a daughter who will be 7 in July, and a son who will be 1 tomorrow. I wasn't super athletic growing up. After my daughter was born I joined the gym and had been going regularly. I got into a conversation at the gym one day with an aquaintance who said she was going to sign up for a sprint tri and asked if I wanted to do it. I said "Um sure" having no bike experience except tooling around on a mountain bike, and no swim experience except for Red cross lessons as a little one. That was 2 seasons ago and have had 2 fun seasons of sprints and one oly, with a half marathon and some 5K and 10K races thrown in there. At the end of last season my friend and I agreed to sign up together for Timberman Half. My training this winter was non existent (for good reason)... we were back and forth to Russia 3 separate times to adopt our son. I got an occasional swim and run in here and there but was so overwhelmed with the traveling and planning. So, now that he is home with us (I would't change that for anything) I need to get my butt in gear if I want to cross the finish line at Timberman. Looking forward to hanging here and getting motivated and having a few laughs along the way. |

Extreme Veteran 717 Chicago | Subject: RE: TriAya (Yanti) and lmscozz (Lynn), Manatee Mentors--OPEN Tri is short for a "tribal tattoo" silly. Should I get one? Well I just started using Look Keo Classic pedals and have only ridden a few times with them. I love them so far! I am actually borrowing a friends pair of shoes currently (since he bought a new pair and there is nothing wrong with his and we are the same size). They feel great. But they are typical road bike shoes as in the come with 2 velcro straps and a buckle. Would it be better for me to buy triathlon bike shoes instead? I wasn't sure how much time I would waste in transition buckling and unbuckling. I have not tried leaving them on the pedals yet and putting feet in once I am already riding. I figured that would be hard enough as is and even harder with a buckle! Thanks ladies! |

I figured that would be hard enough as is and even harder with a buckle! Thanks ladies! Here's my thoughts. If you have a fair amount of money to play with, then by all means, buy all the triathlon toys you want! If you want to be more economical about it, I'd keep the friend's shoes and hope he totally forgets about them ... if you want your own pair, tri shoes are a pretty penny above a decent pair of road shoes. If you're looking for time savings, though, the #1 purchase at this point would be aerobars for your bike if you don't have them yet. Also, in terms of time savings at this point between tri and road shoes--negligible. You'd be far better off practicing all the elements of transition over and over again, until they are truly automatic, like driving a car. For tris, I don't have my shoes clipped into my pedals, but I keep 'em loose enough (and smear or spray a bit o' lube on the inside, as well as the outside of my socks--although I'm currently riding sockless) just to jam my feet in them, get on the bike, and then I can fiddle with the straps once I'm out of transition. This is important to practice, too. |

Extreme Veteran 612 Chicago-ish | Subject: RE: TriAya (Yanti) and lmscozz (Lynn), Manatee Mentors--OPEN From the vast and extensive experience I gathered in my first and only tri last year I can tell you that your straps aren't likely to be the reason you don't make it to the podium this year. Seriously though, I say if you can keep using free shoes then keep using free shoes. If you have to return them to your friend and buy your own then go for the tri shoes. I bought tri specific bike shoes last summer and they definitely go on and off faster than hubby's with the buckles. They also get lots of stares in spin class where everyone else is wearing mountain bike shoes or sneakers. |

I figured that would be hard enough as is and even harder with a buckle! Thanks ladies! I have roadie shoes with 2 velcros and a buckle. Being use to them, they only take seconds to get on. If you are looking to place/win within your AG and those few seconds could change an outcome...go for the tri shoes. Otherwise, comfort in a bike shoe is a huge success, so I'd offer him some $ and keep them Ahh clipless pedals. Thought I had mastered them. NOPE! Just Tuesday I rolled up to a busy intersection and unclipped the left foot and leaned to the right. It was time, it had been a few years since I did it. I was oogling the 140.6 sticker on the back of the SUV beside me and dreaming of the day I could have one of my own. Hit the pavement right there...in front of a friggin IRONMAN. Fail |
