Forecasting the weather is the only job I know where you can be wrong 80% of the time yet still be employed.

Add Economist to that list too.

For the weather obsessed, focus on what you can control. If you can control the weather, low winds and sunny would be great.

Good luck everyone.

Its not looking good for us sprint/oly racers - 60% thunderstorms. I'm trying to have faith in the unpredictable nature of Houston area weather.

What happens if there's a thunderstorm?

I am so bummed about this weather I could cry. I've tracked it for two weeks straight and it's constantly changing.

There was a chance for thunderstorms last yr too.  Never happened, instead we had overcast until about 2pm which was awesome not having the sun beating down on you!  I'm hoping for a repeat

I've been watching it too, but it changes here so quickly, you never know. I'm more worried about wind - 30mph gusts are way too much for me to feel safe out there, I just don't have the bike experience under my belt for that (and weighing a whopping 100lbs I get blown around pretty easily LOL!)

I just hope we don't have thunder and lightening! I would rather deal with the wind. I sure as heck am not a 100 lbs so my big ole' 140lb body can handle the wind. Though, I'd rather the day be perfect with sun, clouds and no wind!

Two parts of this thread to which I want to respond:  (not in any official capacity, just my own opinions)

1) Swimming from Moody Gardens --> Please be careful of the oyster beds!  Many people have cut their feet wading out from shore.  For the race, Keith will have ramps out into the water so that swimmer will not have to walk in over the oyster beds.  If you do go for a practice swim, use the ramps (if available) and/or enter and exit directly from the pier.

2) What will they do if there are thunderstorms:  Possibly delay the race; probably run it anyway, if there is no lightening.  The first year Endorfun put on the Longhorn race there was a torrential squall that came through for the Sprint event.  Lots (and lots and lots) of rain came down.  Afterwards, walking toward the transition area behind an official, I heard him comment to someone else, "I never thought I see the day that I saw a helmet floating out of transition."

I remember them both.  That rain was unbelievable!

I honestly don't mind the rain. I've never swam or biked in the rain but I'm sure it's possible. I have however run in the rain and I loved it. I just didn't want to train all this time for it to be canceled.

Just my freaking luck!

I am not pleased about this situation. It is out of my control though so I guess I'd better just shut up and do what I have to do on Saturday. I really really hope we do all three.

You really won't know till you get out there, look up at the sky and check out the flags for the wind.

I for one would be thrilled for a duathlon! We won't be that lucky. The weather makes me wish I hadn't dropped down to the Oly.

I *LOVED* that rain, was basically deliriously happy the entire run.  But many of us drowned our phones that day -- mine died alone in a puddle in the bottom of my bag.    So:  leave the phone in a car, or at least secured in a ziplock baggie!

(I wish I could post my picture from that rain run but somehow posting pics is not working for me!)

Oh man, you guys are scaring the heck out of this desert girl! I'm from Palm Springs where it rains maybe 10 times a YEAR, so Houston weather/rain has been a huge adjustment for me as it is, I don't leave the house when it rains let alone biking or running in it!

Strange question - but how is handling a road bike in the rain? I'm a brand new cyclist as it is, but never riding, breaking, turning, etc in the rain - I think I probably shouldn't ride if its wet out there, for everyone else's safety? I'd hate to take out someone else because of my inexperience, not a good way to make an impression at my very first tri!

LOL - we'd be quite the pair then, huh?

But you never can tell around here what the weather will do until it actually does it, so I've decided I'm not going to worry about it anymore until Saturday morning.

I would just like to add that the weather here in the Houston area is very unpredictable and it can change very quick. So we really do not know what it will do untill Saturday morning. If you look at TWC  it says 60% chance and if you look at local it says 30-40%. Normally the rain does not come untill the evening  or late afternoon. We can not control it but I think that we will be just fine, I have biked in the rain and did not find it bad at all and swim and run is great in the rain(if there is no lightning....lol...) I would imagine that we will have a great race and enjoy it very much
