Girl, trust me, I am right there with you.  This seems to be this RD's MO.  They put on a good race but the ladies are always last and always in age order.  I was in a thread about this in Tri Talk a week or so ago.  It falls on deaf ears.  I'm racing Athena so second to last wave.  Why they want women in their 50s and 60s running last when it is hottest is beyond me.  Course has to stay closed longer, longer day for volunteers and as you said the food is usually gone.  I'll bring something to eat/drink with me and if there is food left over I will be pleasantly surprised.

The good news is there will be plenty of folks to cheer us on at the finish line!  That's my silver lining!  LOL

Right, I am over 40 so would be in the last wave except they put Athena's in the 2nd to last.
My concern is for the 'older' athletes out there in the sun.

They always want the pros/elites to have an open course with nobody in front of them.  Par for the course for every tri, running race, bike race, etc. 

I can't remember where I saw the list for wave starts, I can't find it now...but I thought I was in the second to last to wave too (@7:25) I'm not thrilled about the heat either, especially because I am SO slow on bike.

The women went before the men at the Gateway to the Bay olympic distance event in April.  Same RD (Aaron P.).

Historically, women usually start after the men at most events.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you here.  The women were the very last to get off the boat at Gateway.  All women were together but all the men were in the water before women got off the boat.  Then men in red caps were the wave ahead of ours, again, older guys and clydes. 
I have been in a few races where the waves staggered and women weren't in the front but not last either.  I totally understand pro's/elites going first but I really don't get all women going last.  Most guys I know would be happy to see women on the course which is possible and there are some amazingly fast women out there, but not likely.  There is actually a 10 minute pause after the last men before the first women.  Go figure.

Did they mix the women in between men's groups at Gateway?  I could have sworn the women went before me (M40-44).  Guess I was wrong?!?

I distinctly recall passing a lot of ladies on the bike but I guess that could have been the second lap.  I stand corrected.

The reason, I would assume, that women go last is because the women's groups are slower than the men's groups (duh!).  The prevailing wisdom would be to place the slower folks last to lessen the "clog" on the race course for the faster folks.  I also see the point in having the slower groups go first in order to clear the course faster.

So in looking at the digital packet download, it shows the various swim cap colors and wave start times but does anyone know what age is associated with which color?  I guess I'll find out when i see what color cap is in my packet.  I assume it's by age group right?

Picked up packets tonight and I have to say Aaron did a great job. Good shirt, headsweats hat, bib w/name on it and Betsy was very happy with the women size shirts.Good luck to all, should be a great race!

Got my packet yesterday and it was like Christmas going home and opening it :-)

Of course now I have a sore throat and fever today, and I am going to be so disappointed if I can't race Sunday and don't get to ever wear the cool shirt and hat :-(

I agree on the great swag, but I don't recall having an option for women's shirt sizes in the registration. So now I have been burned twice this season with a shirt that is too small for me to wear.

He might let you trade it out.  (Aaron was there when we picked them up.)  You are correct - they did not have that option.  

Thanks for confirming...I was going to kick myself if I missed that. And for all the things Houston Marathon has done wrong this year, it was nice to know the shirt sizing options when I registered for the lottery. I'll keep my fingers crossed I can trade up for a women's medium!
