I was wondering the same thing.

I just started the final 3 week training block before a one week taper.

It's actually a 4 week taper.  The plan is by Gale Bernhardt.  The "27 week plan to a half-ironman" from

Training Plans for Multisport Athletes

It is a very popular book and Gale is well known.  I am very confident in the plan.  I'm not sure that a one week taper is enough, but I'm sure you all know what you are doing.  Thanks for the reply.  I'm getting excited and the chatter is fun.

A sidenote:  It might not be called a taper by some.  There is some "heavy hitting" still left in the plan with 3 bricks left, but the fact remains that last week was the heaviest week and the hours decrease from there.  Hence, I am labeling it a taper.

I know, i just looked at my plan and have one more solid build block before taper begins. Everyone's situation is different, though. For me, steelhead will be my 15th half-ironman, and will be my 4th this season....so a 1 week taper is all I have time for.

Ultimately, you should trust your plan- you picked it for a reason!

well.. this race should be interesting.

I got sent to China for work for just under 3 weeks.... no real biking, no swimming, and very little running.

This was last month. It completely threw off my training.

I will be the guy you see run/walking at the end of the half mary

See you guys in 2 weeks :D

Ugh... last wave again.... that sucks.

And they still do not have the up-to-date 2011 athlete guide.  And the expo is at St. Joseph's High School and not the college.

Anyone else feel like they are under trained for this race?

Why does last wave suck?  Is it because there is less time to make it to the cut-offs?  That is why I wouldn't want to be in the last wave.  Or, is it because one has to sit there all jittery before they get to start?  That seems like it would be awful too.  This is my first 70.3 so I'm just curious.  I'm not sure if I'm prepared but I'd like to think I am.  I am just finishing up a 27 week plan, so we'll see how it goes.

Good luck everyone!

Dude, that BLOWS! Looking at the swim waves reminds me why I have been avoiding WTC events this year...and likely won't do them after this one. Too many of the typically fastest age groups going off at the end. That bike course is going to be a crowded cluster----. I'm going to stay far from the aid stations for sure. I mean, you're not going to start until 8:49?!? They need to bunch some of these AGs together and cut the time between waves from 7 mins to 4 - 5.

It is the waiting... Transition closes at 6:30am and my wave is 8:49am.... thats 2:20 of waiting.  Hotel is too far away, and even if it was close, traffic will be terrible because of the race.  Most parking is not close to the transition/start/finish area, so going back to your car is not the easiest.  I dont mind waiting, but over 2 hours makes planning a little more difficult.  I have considered bring a tent and sleeping on the beach!

Last year I think it was about 150 or so.

A question for anyone who has been to Steelhead before as a spectator or athlete:

Are dogs allowed with the spectators?

Another question to those that have done the race before.

Are the bike racks marked with your bib number or is it first come first serve?

Dogs - I think they say no dogs, but I brought my dog (rather my wife brought our dog) and there were plenty of other dogs around too. Racks - numbered, in order, with even numbers on one side and odd numbers on the other. So bikes are sticking out both sides. Also the rows are really long, so make sure you run down the correct row!

Hey all you BT'ers doing Steelhead!  If all goes as planned, I will be supporting whomever wants it race day.  I plan to be at the site before the Pro's launch and will stick around for a few hours (1 or 2ish).  I'd be happy to bring some basic bike tools or other items as may be needed.  I'll get a list of those racing and plan to be around cheering AT you   Prolly be in some Team Motiv8 shirt or something - if you see me, stop my and say 'Hey'

Did you all already post up your race numbers or start any type of list?

Thanks for the offer Jhag. I'd like to say I'll keep an eye out for ya, but as my first HIM, my mind is likely going to be elsewhere :-)

Can anyone tell me if Steelhead uses transition bag? Where do you grab them when your racing? I've never done a tri that uses bags before.

Thanks!

I was talking to some folks today about that and they said that you just have your bag at your bike like normal.... unless they changed it this year.

About the transition bags.... they dont have them.  Just a normal, do it yourself transition.

@ Jeremy: I will look out for you, maybe I will see you again on the run course telling me to run faster?

I knew I forgot something.  I forgot to add that I'll be in the black and white Grand Rapids Bicycle Co tri top.  I hope I see some of you there.  Rick, we are in the same age group and same city.  It would definitely be fun to see you!  Although, this will be my last year in this age group.
