pbrown70 - 2010-12-23 11:42 AM NAME: pbrown70(Paul) you can guess my last name.

STORY:
Growing up I played any and all sports but mainly the big three baseball, football and basketball. In college I played footaball and tennis. Injuries always found a way to sideline me. I have had both arthoscopic and recontructive surgery on my knee and recently have been told I need both a knee and hip replacement. I however have other plans. I've never done a tri but, have always wanted to. So, here I'm am.

FAMILY STATUS:
I am married and have three children. A beautiful 8 yr old girl and two boys age 5 and 15 months. A Pug (Bugsley), a Bird (Irving), and a Ginnie pig (Ellie).

CURRENT TRAINING: Just started swimming and running and in the process of putting the bike I bought online together( right now it looks like a pile of lego's spread out on the floor).

GOALS:
My main goal is wieght loss and to complete my first tri.

2010 RACES: none

2011 RACES: So far I would like to do the M.I.T. open to other events if the opportunity presents itself.

WEIGHTLOSS:  I 'm currently at 240 lbs I would like to get down under 200 a wieght I haven't seen since college.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
I will do anything I need to do to get to my goal but, because I know nothing about training for a tri I'm in extreme need of both direction and I’m sure I'll need a push for time to time.

Welcome aboard!

I'm guessing you're from the Boston area with the MIT open, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Well actually I'm from Sarasota florida but, I'm a recent transplant and I'm orginally from Rhode Island. Anyway I should have been more specific. The race I want to do is the Miami International Distance Triathlon (M.I.T.) sorry about that. Plus it is way to cold in New England in March...

Would love to make it to Miami to race.  Flat, warm, and my parents live there so free lodging.  Maybe the 70.3 down there in 2012.

So it looks like we have a few people who have the bronze/silver/gold plans here at BT.  What are your opinions?  Are they worth it?

I have silver for two reasons: (1) I like having access to all the training plans, even if I'm not using them, I think they're interesting to read and learn and from; and (2) I use the site so much (especially the logging feautures) I feel like I "owe" BT sometihng -- kind of like an NPR pledge drive.

I bought the bronze plan solely as a way to donate/support the site, since I get a lot of info here. I own a few sites myself and am active on lots of forums, so I know the cost/effort put in and try and give back where I see the benefit.

Beyond that, I have liked being able to get in on the monthly chats with the experts. I got some good swim tips and a little bit of nutrition advice in a couple.

The Garmin uploader is nice, I just wish it worked with my Edge 800 as well (works great with the 310xt).

I'm sure I don't use the plan to it's potential, though, but the part of me giving to the site was the main reason.

Welcome (again).  I worked in restaurants for 8 years and now how tough it is when there's constantly food around.

So how hot was the Hotter 'n Hell 50 this year?

Hotter 'n Hell was HOT in the afternoon. Wasn't too bad in the morning. Luckily for me, I was done before noon, went back to the hotel and rested/showered, then came back to the event and waited for my friends that did the 100. By the time they arrived, it was pushing in the very high 90's and shade was at a premium. The got delayed a ton by one guy with 3 flats, a train, and someone ahead of them had a horrible crash that required a helicopter to come get them.

I am terribly sorry.  I’m just learning how these forums work and I didn’t realize I had already been accepted to another group before I applied to this one.  I thought it had closed without considering me… I do apologize.   I will stick to the other one.  But I think this is a wonderful bunch and I added you all to my friends list hoping to see you around and keep in touch.

Thank you very much.  Have a wonderful Christmas!!Smile

Light training this weekend except for swimming.  Still getting my underside used to being in the saddle again (any advice will help, just sore every time I hop on), and my IT band pain (getting PT) is still sore so limits the amound of time I can run.

So short run tonight, swim tomorrow and Sunday, maybe bike on Saturday.

Hope everyone has a great holiday!

I'm heading up to the folks farm for the holidays. As i dont have a bike rack for my car yet and there is no pool in sight (unless you count my folks half empty green thing that hasnt been cleaned all winter), i'll get to work on my running instead! No set plan yet, i might have a look at the couch to   5k plan to give me some inspiration.

Just contributing to the weight discussion. Having lost 10kg in 6mths i have had a lot of very positive comments (the best one being yesterday, when a work colleague told me i was emitting a very healthy glow). In the last few weeks though ive had people suggesting i should stop now, offering me cake at morning tea etc...i try to explain im not quite at my goal weight yet (close but not yet) but the comments dont stop. I wonder why? People are such strange creatures...

I started with free and soon wanted to load my training plan into my log. I find logging my workouts and then seeing how I much I have achomplished extremely motivating. I get inspiration reading the logs of my group. I upgraded to silver recently to have more training plans to use.

NAME: Bruce

STORY:
This will be my 3rd season in trathlon.  I quit smoking on the last day of law school and started running after the bar exam.  Running wasn't quite enough so I looked into and started doing tri's.  I like the Olympic distance - its just hard enough and the training doesn't take too much time.

FAMILY STATUS:
Married, no kids

CURRENT TRAINING:  Marathon training starts next this coming Monday for the Long Island Marathon.  I've been basically just messing around since my last race of the year.  I have been resisting going back to the pool but I don't know why.  New Years Resolution is to get into the pool 3 days a week.

GOALS:
Sub 4:00 Marathon and a good swim in the Mighty Hamptons olympic

2010 RACES:  Mini mighty man (super sprint), L.I. Marathon, Mighty Hamptons (oly), Cow Harbor 10k, Ho ho ho 5k

2011 RACES: Same as 2010, but I'm possibly doing the Philly Tri (I supposedly got a free entry from the sponsor's booth at IMLP.)

WEIGHTLOSS:  I've been trying to get down to 175 for 3 years.  I'm still trying

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:    Beats me.  Really.  I'm mostly easy to get along with.

My weekend is not starting out great. I got out of work late and never got my run today. We are traveling for the weekend 4 hours away. I will bring my running gear and hope to get 1-2 runs in this weekend.

My first question - I have a half marathon scheduled for April 17th (it is my first 1/2 and my longest distance race so far). I just saw another 1/2 marathon I would like to do, but it is on May 1st - is that long enough recovery for a newbie long distance runner?

Question -- sore as in numbness or sore as in chaffing?

Numbness is a bike position issue and you might want to try a different saddle position or even a different saddle.  I personally need a saddle with a slit down the middle.

Chaffing is a lubrication issue -- I love DZNuts Bliss for Women -- works magic.

In my experience you can participate in both, but it would be really tough to "race" both -- by that I mean if you plan to go all out for the first one, you're going to need some time to recover post-race and probably won't be back to top form by the second one -- doesn't mean you can't run it, just remember you may be tired.

What I would do is follow a half marathon plan to the end for the 1st one (BT has a really good HM plan) I would then take a few days off to recover completely, build up to some light running over the next week or so and then race again on May 1st.

STORY:
Former Jav thrower at LSU...got into running/tri's about 3 years ago after I finished competing and had about 30lbs to lose....I was a college strength and conditioning coach (CSCS certified) and now a full time stay at home mom to an amazing 7 1/2 month old...I also am a throws coach for a local hs

FAMILY STATUS:
Married ...1 child: 7.5 months old and 2 fur babies

CURRENT TRAINING:  I'm currently doing mostly a running block, my plan is to build up to 35mpw and hold it ...I will be adding biking and swimming back into the mix after

GOALS:
sub 20:30 5k...sub 13:00 2 mile and get to the starting line healthy and in the best shape of my life for my A race in October

2010 RACES:
A sprint tri 3 months after giving birth ( Won my age group), a 5k in 24:00 on only 12-15 miles a week for a month or two (PR is 22:30)

2011 RACES:  Still working on this one

WEIGHTLOSS: I've lost the 50lbs that I had gained while pregnant ( My god was is that much, damn double whoopers from BK) now I'm back to my 150-155 range that I like being 6'0 tall. I want to get down to the 145-150 range but I'm comfortable here now and I know once I get serious and dial in my eating, ( right now I'm eating whatever I want) I will drop those last few pounds) - Will probably go low carb / keto after my race on Jan. 15th.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
I have a knowledgeable background in nutrition and strength training and still relatively new to this, so I'm still like a sponge and wanting to learn everything there is about S/B/R training.....

I noticed that someone dropped out of this group, so I want in.  I'm also a good friend of Kelly's.  She has been an amazing mentor and friend to me thus far.

NAME:
  Erica

STORY:
Just started running in college, started doing road races years ago, got into triathlons more recently (maybe 3-4 years ago) and now I'm hooked.  This summer, I did two half ironman triathlons.  I would LOVE to do a full ironman one day.

FAMILY STATUS:
Married this past May, no kids (yet).

CURRENT TRAINING:  I am training for the Hyannis half marathon and am using a coach who wrote me out a 20 week plan, which focuses on running but also has me biking and swimming (minimally) for maintenance purposes.

GOALS:
Half marathon between 1:45 - 1:50.  Basically, I want to keep up with Kelly.

2010 RACES:
Patriot Half, Mossman Sprint, Lake T Sprints, FIRMman, Cranberry Sprint

2011 RACES:  For now, 10 mile race in Maine in February and Hyannis half.

WEIGHTLOSS: Basically, I just need to stop eating like crap.  I have a huge appetite, and I need to eat better.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
Someone who is supportive, but who can help me see my potential, and who will push me!

Its a high protein, high fat, low carb diet.  Its similar to a Paleo diet.  The technical definition from wikipedia is:

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet mimics aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fuelling brain function. However, if there is very little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures.[1]

Basically you try to keep your carbs under 20g a day if possible if you're doing CKD.  When I ran it I was in the 15-25g range daily.  The idea is that once your body has depleted its glycogen stores that it moves to converting fat as the primary source of energy.  When you initially start it takes about a week to get into this state.  There are also carb refeeds to "reset" the system for lack of a better term.  So you'd go 2 weeks with no carbs if possible and then have a cheat meal/day with a ton of carbs.  After that the cheat meal comes every 7-10 days instead of 2 weeks.  It's a VERY effective diet, but takes a highly disciplined person to pull it off.  The trick many people loose out on is gradually working carbs back into your diet so you find a point where the weight doesn't just jump back on.

There is also TKD which is basically keto priciples with carbs on either side of the workout and no carbs the rest of the day.  This isn't "true" keto because your body never really totally depletes itself of glycogen, but a lot of athletes have success using it.

I will look these over, but I tried to stay on a strict Atkins diet and made it close to two weeks and felt so crappy and emotional that I went back to just eating. I would like to cut down on carbs, but need to really look at what I can sustain over a long period of time.
