Looks like its the rollers and treadmill for me this weekend.  Hopefully a swim on Sunday morning.

I'll be hitting the pool for some getting back into the swing of things action after this 13.1 race this weekend; TUT, TUT IT LOOKS LIKE RAIN!!!.  This along with my Saturady Indoor Cycling class.  I won't be running any more road races for this point forward; unless it is tied to a Triathlon.

FYI Incase you are interested....Oregon just added a couple new Long-Distance Tri's (Half-Ironman Distance)  to the Portland area races.  One of them is a leg on the REV3 Circuit and the other is from a local race promoter; the race is called Stumptown Tri; the news just came out this week.  It is at one of the venues that is pretty popular in the Portland area (Blue Lake).

Nice 90 minute trail run this morning. Kept my HR in the zone consistently, and was mostly flowing up and down the hills.

2 hour spin at the Y yesterday. Several other Iron hopefuls there, looking at IMKY in August.

Overall, a good week in the books. Will try to get those swim sessions up to 50 minutes each. Just have to make sure to have everything ready the night before.

Reporting on my 1/2 Mary this morning.  It was a very wet and windy day.  Actually it was pretty warm out as well.  Met my goal of sub 2 hr.  Was looking to run a 9:00 min. pace and was right on the money.  Time:  1:57:49 (9:00 pace).

Have a great week everyone.  It will be a rest week for me with some pool swims here and there.

I have yet to invest in rollers, some day!

Will, have you done any sufferfest videos?

Not yet, this is the first year I have been able to make myself actually ride indoors (as opposed to taking the winter off).  Just googled sufferfest, looks pretty intense.  I think I may have to look into picking one of them up.

Brian,

Congrats on your half finish. I ran a very disappointing 2:08 last Spring, when I was targeting <2:00. Nice job.

Will,

I really like the Sufferfest videos. They can be as intense as you want them to be. I'm doing a HR training plan, so I follow along but stay in my planned zone for that ride. I have 5 of the videos now, after really enjoying the the first 2 I purchased. My favorites right now are "Angels" or "The Hunted".  I'll be checking out the new release as well. For the money, they really are a great way to get that time in the saddle in the books.

I agree with Jim about the Sufferfest videos, Im not a big fan of spinervals, I dont think Coach troy is very motivational.

Brian, great race!

Molly, Chris I think lives in Santa Monica, he has been racing ITU for the last 5 years, he has even beat Macca.

My race went well Sunday, the weather cooperated. There were many accidents in the race before ours, six ambulances had to come.

Thanks.  It was looking dim toward the end as my pace was fading.  Did most of my walking the second half.  Kind of went out too hard the first half and hung on until the end and dug deep the last .5 mile.

I'd like to get to a point of having a wonderful last three miles.  I guess that would entail me pacing myself better the first 10 miles!!! : )

I remember the last HM I did I had to go to the bathroom really bad and was holding it until mid race where the lines were not so bad, I was trying to PR. I was going to do a Nascar pit stop and get in and get out, only the woman that was already in there did not lock the door as I jumbed in, we both yelled as I fell on top of her, I was able to get my balance and get out!

I'd like some feedback on a question or thought I have.  After running a couple of Half-Marathons since this past Oct. I think I have established a pretty good base with my running especially if I may begin training for a Long Endurance race say Half-Iron Distance.  My question is do I stick with my current mileage or reduce my mileage and follow the plan recommendations?

My initial thoughts are:

1.  To Continue my speed workouts on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings (consists of anything from total mileage of 6-8 miles of Tempo runs, repeats of 400/800/1000; pyramids (200/400/800/1200/1600/1200/800/400/200); you get the picture.
2.  Go back to the suggested plan of Moderate Pace runs of 4-6 miles (goes up as you get further into the plan) during the week; type of workout varies as the plan moves on.  Continue my long runs on the weekend starting at 6-8 miles and build up to approx. 14 miles again.  The plan is pretty close to this on the long runs.  Would forgo the long-runs at times and do a Brick instead as the plan would recommend.

Bike and Swim workouts would follow the plan recommendations.

Thanks for any insight.

For me I'm prone to run injuries, especially speed workouts, so I have to ramp up my running even if I have a good base. Really its a judgement call, however I value recovery just as important as the volume itself. A good training plan will incorporate adjusted volumes that will gradually peak reducing the chances of injury and allowing for plenty of rest, midifications to maintain a high volume in one sport increases that risk.
October 2008 I did the Rock n Roll Half Marathon and maintained my run volume, I was doing a speed workout in February training for a HIM in April and both my hips siezed up and continued to nag me throught the whole year. It may have been a factor of many other things that could have been the cause. As a result I am now a huge advocate of periodizition training, it allows for true recovery, adaptation, peak performance.

That makes perfect since.  Thanks for the reminder about recovery, adaptation and peaking.  All comes in stages.

Thanks...here is my info

NAME: Fernando/Guticur

STORY: 2011 will be my second year doing triathlons. Last year I participated in 2 mentor groups (it was great). I am 42 years old. Have always tried to do some physical activity, but never as structured as last year. Not much of a background in any of the three disciplines, just a little jogging. Competed on my first 5k during the Fall of 09. Finished up the season with my first Oly distance tri. Have done balanced training. Over the winter I am concentrating on my running pace, which I think is my worst discipline. Hoping to do mainly Olys this year and a HIM next year.

FAMILY STATUS: Married. 2 boys, 10 and 14, very active. Both competed on IronKids last year. My wife runs (doesn't like to bike or swim). We try to participate in a few races together every year.

WEIGHTLOSS:   Have lost about 30# in the process (around 175 now), but stalled over the holidays. Shooting for 10 more this year.

CURRENT TRAINING: I use the 20 week Oly balanced schedule from BT as a guide. I use the Total Immersion system for swimming (it does work), and am using the FIRST training program for running ("Run less, run faster" book). Need some direction with bike (just got a new toy for this year!)

2010 RACES: 2 Sprints and 1 Olympic tri. Bunch of 5ks, 10 mile run (Broad Street, Philly) and ING half marathon (Philly).

2011 RACES: Cherry Blossom 10 mile run (DC), Broad Street 10 mile run, local Sprint tri and at least 3 Olympics, finishing with the Nations Tri. Rock'n Roll Vegas half marathon.

Looking forward to exchanging experiences with the group. Thanks again.

Fernando.

Wife and both kids, who have been trying to give me their crud all week, finally succeeded today. After 2.5 hour spin at Y I'm coughing, feverish and chilled. Looks like I'll be missing my long run tomorrow, in favor of increased chicken soup intake and hopefully a nap or two. Arrgh!Yell The long run is my favorite part of the week during this season.

Sorry to hear that.  I too had a spin class this morning.  1.5 hours long.  Average 154 watts.  I was one tired puppy at the end.  I was training for my 1/2 Mary and hadn' t been for 3 weeks.  Everybody is healthy in our household; knock on wood.  Take Care everyone.

It's been hard to work out this weekend...I've been on call. I was able to squeeze in a short bike trainer session yesterday. Today I did 1 hour of Body flow at gym (combination yoga - pilates) and an 8 mile "treadmill" run Undecided (12 degrees and icy here today).
Gym announced they will launch later this month a new series called CX 30 (les mills). Supposed to be all core action!. Looking forward to checking it out (helps with biking right?)

Swan 1/2 mile this afternoon at the Pool.  First swim since last Sept.  Felt pretty good.  Time myself for 1x100yds. just to see where I was at with pacing;  1:40/100.  Pretty average pace for me.  Feel like I haven't lost much in my form.  Will gradually increase my workouts in the pool prior to beginning my Half-Ironman Plan the 2nd week of Feb.

Subject:  Bike set-up...

I want to change the set-up of my road bike to better my position myself in an areo position and not be so spreadout in my torso.  Financially I can't afford a used tri bike (have to pay for repairs on my Honda Pilot to the terms of $3,000 this week) right now.  I have a Century Profile Design aero bars right now.  I noticed my handlebar stem is pretty adjustable and I have about 3 inches of shims under the stem so I could lower it if I needed to.  My plan is to purchase a Profile Design Fast Forward Seat Post to position myself closer and adjust my arms rests on my aero bars further back.  My question is about the shims and if I should be removing any of these; should your handle bars be lower or level with the top of your bike seat?  I believe when I went in to the LBS for a fit it they made it pretty level.  Any thing else I should be given consideration to in terms of positioning?

Thanks
