As a christian I've read this thread and the thread from Michael posted for Christian triathletes, and I'm struck by something. The thread for Christian triathletes, in which Michael Pates simply gave a link to a christian based tri club was quickly hijacked and became a forum for a debate on the merits of christianity and a forum for non-christians to voice their opinions. However, in this thread no christian has chimed in to attempt to convert or change the opinions of those that answered this thread. And yet, many of you that have participated in this thread have called christians intolerant, and ignorant.

Interesting that the athiests hijacked the Christian thread, but not a single "intolerant" christian has hijacked this thread.
I'm not going to get into a public debate regarding my faith and Christianity. If anyone would like to find out why I am a believer they are more than welcome to PM me and I can explain my views. Perhaps we can engage in a civil exchange of ideas and beliefs. I agree with some of the things said in this thread and some, as a christian I find blatantly offensive, and purposefully intolerant.

I just thought I'd point out the interesting paradox of this thread and the "attention Christian triathletes" thread, and how the opposing viewpoints acting in each of the threads.

So much I've typed and didn't submit. I hit the backspace button a little too much on this one. I'll just say this, if a couple of threads on a triathlete board shapes your opinion of the world, then brother you have issues. I'd be more than happy to exchange ideas, in the open, where everyone can learn.

Personally, I don’t know why we are having this discussion on a tri board anyway. Look, I believe, you don't. Who is wrong? Who knows? Who cares? Let's please NOT ruin the BEST forum of any kind on the entire web with debate over religion. Now, can we just go train or race already!!!!!!!!!

I'm really not even sure what this means? "If a couple of threads on a triathlete board shapes your opinion of the world, then brother you have issues" I don't think I said anything that would remotely indicate that these two threads "shape my opinion of the world". I just found it interesting that there was a simple thread by Michael Pate in which he passed along a link about a christian based triathlon group, that quickly got hijacked by individuals slamming christianity. But then in a seperate thread many of those same individuals insisted that Christians were intolerant, but yet not a single christian hijacked the athiest thread to slam athiests.

If you want to talk to me about my faith you can PM me. The only possible purpose for doing it in public is that you have an agenda. And it appears that the agenda is to denograte my beliefs. I'm not interested in that type of debate, it bores me. It is best left to drunkards at the Pub. If you believe, then you believe. If you don't, you don't. If you're on the edge and are interested and are seeking a personal relationship with Christ, then there is no need to discuss it in a public forum. We can talk in private, you can see what I believe and why, and make your own decision.

My beliefs are based first and foremost on faith, which of course you can't change. They are also based upon historical and archiological corroboration of the people and places of the Bible, both the new and old testiment. What would be the point of debating in a public forum? You obviously have a pre conceived idea of what "so everyone can learn" means. My invitation wasn't to "debate" anything. My invitation was for me to "explain" my views. ANd Chucky, if you are truely interested in knowing what I believe and why, you can PM me. But, if my assumption is correct, you simply want to engage in a debate about my faith, then I'm not interested. My faith isn't up for debate. Some may find it "ignorant", some may find it "rediculous" but in the end it is my faith.

Not to mention debating my faith, would totally destroy my entire point of my post, because then I would be hijacking this thread to engage in a debate about the merits of Christianity. THis of course would be contrary to my intitial point.

So as I've said before, Chucky, if you are truely interested in why I believe what I believe, and not just engaging in some psudo-intelectual debate exercise to attempt to show everyone how smart you are, then PM me. No conversion will be attempted on my part, I'm not an evangalist. It may be interested, assuming it is done with respect, politness, and understanding.

Yes, this is a tri board, but this is an OT forum. Sure we're triathletes, but I like to think I'm defined by more than that. I really like the fact that there's a place where I can go to discuss any manner of issues and know that it's not going to tun into some humongous flame war, like it would on every other forum I've ever participated in. As long as the OT stuff is kept (or moved to) in the OT forum, and as long as people are respectful, bring it on! I think I'm a reasonable intelligent person, but I swear I learn new things here every day.

In my mind there has not been a more detrimental, evil and misguided movement in the history of man than religion.

I also get very angry when educated, well-reasoned people make excuses for those of faith and their actions. That "free-pass," that desire not to be ostersized by this religious country has contributed to many of our current fundamentalist issues like Iraq and is furthering an intolerant society that will not accept you, no matter how understanding of their faith and regardless of your tolerance for their point of view.

Teaching abstinence instead of sexual education is a "mild" example of what happens when people let religious zealots make decisions for them in the name of god. Teen pregnancy and disease is higher than ever - and I blame Christianity. Is this desire to have someone with all the answers tell you what to do so great that you won't open your own eyes? that this abstinence only education is casing your children to spend the rest of their life living with sexually transmitted diseases? That your kids are having abortions because of your misguided faith?

Jesus is not going to make everything all right. Take some responsibility, and instead of giving your money to these charlatans, why don't you donate to a more reasonable charity that will not keep building bigger churches, driving bigger cars and funding more extravagant congregations

Pat Robinson praying nightly on TV for more "openings" on the Supreme Court - in effect praying for Justices to die is another is what faith is really about. It's about intolerance and recruitment. It's not ok, it's stupid and destructive and a lie and scared people ignore these things done in their gods name as long as they think they themselves are going to get into heaven.

It's disgusting.

This is right on the mark - The growth of conservative religion in America over the last 10 years, and its prominent role in our current presidential administration, is the largest internal threat to our way of life. I see little hope for a turn around though. I appear to be in a minority on this, and I am reaching the point where I think more than half of all Americans handle snakes and speak in tounges.

I don't know if you're in the minority or if the rest of us are just tired of expounding on the rise of the American theocracy, since I think this is the third thread now to address the topic.

"I would like to sing a song of great social and political import and it goes a little something like this....

Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz
My friends all drive Porches
I must make Amends
Worked hard all my Lifetime
No Help from My friends
And oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedez Benz

And Oh Lord won't you buy Me a color TV
Dialing for Dollars
Is trying to find me
I wait for Delivery Each Day until 3
And Oh Lord won't you buy Me a Color TV

And oh Lord won't you buy me a Night on the Town
I'm counting on you Lord
Please don't let me down
Prove that you love me
And buy the next round
Oh Lord won't you buy me a night on the town."

We sang that song while doing wall sits after weights in college. Kept the mind off the burning legs. Who can tell me who it is?

Well, go bears.  Then go steelers.  I went to Miami University so I have to like Big Ben.

By the way, if there really was a god Rex Grossman wouldn't already be injured in the 2nd pre season game, and the bears wouldn't suck so bad.  Everyone knows god is a bears fan.
