This thread has had the probably unintended effect of making me feel better.  I have tendonitis in my foot and I'm out for a couple of weeks, when I was on track to PR a 5K in December.  So that bummed me out for a bit, but I see it can be a lot worse - I can still swim and bike, and I'll be back running in not too long of a time frame.

So thank you for the healthy dose of perspective.

It actually makes me feel better, too. When I look back on what I've gone through and managed to accomplish anyway, and the other things in life I've gotten to do and learned, it's pretty cool.

And yes, a lot of people in this thread are struggling with a lot worse and will be for longer.

I've heard a lot of good things about them...depends on your ortho, I guess. Mine just isn't a "believer"...so we all must suffer :D

Here's where I spent my convalescence months.. I forgot what my own bed was like. The living room and I became one. It was fun having a bed in the LR for about three days. Then it was old.The cats, though (all three of them) thought it was AWESOME.:

That's sort of my theory. I do what I can with what I have. And there's always someone out there who's got it worse. I'm happy for all the little things (and big things) I CAN do. No sense in regretting what I can't. ;-

Rocker I think it is fabulous that you are running again...really splendid.

My hope is to be able to run a wee bit....nothing crazy, just 5 k maybe 2-3 times a week. Just for the good of my soul, since it brings me such joy.

We shall see.

If not? Then I will continue to rack up the miles on my bike.

Oh, and I have taken up rock climbing too. WhenI was having my surgery (I had a spinal and was awake) I told my surgeon that I started climbing and that I had zero pain from it and he said that because of where my defect is, that climbing is a great activity for me, and will not negatively affect my knee at all.

I also hope to learn to ice climb. Really really want crampons and ice axes!!

Any sport with axes is bound to be awesome! Cycling has really taken up a bigger portion of my workouts--and I never would have ridden at all, had it not been for the knee, so you never know when you might find a blessing in disguise, as they say.

5k 2-3x a week is about what I am doing. Supplementing it with a lot of cycling, the ET, and pool running lets me be able to do dus well enough without all the extra pounding except on race day, so it's not bad.

You'll be up and running in no time--and feeling better mentally too. :-) (I mean, swinging an axe has a lot of therapeutic benefits, as well as physical ones).

Hi George.....I think that you are my kindred spirit...

I too have knee issues and a torn rotator cuff. The shoulder honestly does not give me too much trouble.

The knee?

Well......thats another story.

I found my solace in riding.

Would it be possible for cycling to become your happy place as well??

Cycling used to have a happy place for me, and I think it will again.  I'm learning to re-discover the joy of riding and running for the sake of it as opposed to a workout.  I've missed running a lot and am missing riding too.  (I don't miss swimming much.  I still like it but I don't miss it.)

I've actually gotten back into volleyball and it has helped me to be lighter on my feet and stay more on my toes.  The jumping is probably not great for me but at this point I'm going to enjoy the time that I have left with my knee, even if I hasten its demise.

So I'm back to the drawing board! Yesterday at 12 I just took a nose dive in terms of my energy. In bed at 8:45 and slept 10 hours!

Come on, I only have 1 pill left of my zpack!  And this is round 3!

I'm zapped too. I've spent the better part of three days in a row sleeping. Like, 20+ hours a day.

Y'know, it takes what it takes. I keep Googling my illnesses and thinking, shouldn't I be better now (actually I'm totally rushing it as usual--by all accounts dengue and typhoid can keep people down for weeks or months, not to mention together) ... but apparently individual illnesses don't Google and follow the prescribed course.

It's going to be what it's going to be for me, whether that's better/worse/shorter/longer than the average course.

And for you: healing {{MELON PRESS}}. Are you working? How's that going?

I love melon presses!  I think school is just draining to me. I made it ok over the weekend (even swam and ran Friday, ran 8 miles and went out Saturday night, and biked 2 hours Sunday) but I have been absolutely exhausted ever since.  I think I can get away with it on the weekend, but during the school week I"m just drained!

This is just so unlike me. I hate feeling "lazy".  But its definitely not lazy, I just am lethargic!  Fortunately I think it should get better, since this is all onset of my fall allergies. Basicaly I think my immune system has to work so hard during this season, it it making me susceptible to little things. Can't fight a war on two fronts!

Yanti you're amazing.  I appreciate anyone that is so exhausted yet still has the ability to spread sunshine to others!!

You are a wise woman.

Allergies are very draining to begin with and you've had an infection on top of it (more draining) and then boatloads of antibiotics (even more draining even though eventually they do help). No wonder you're having a hard time.

I think especially athletes expect ourselves to be able to HTFU and get through it, but actually, we share the same physiology as all other Homo sapiens

And that is a LOT of working out, lady!!! You still riding, too?

As for sunshine, well ... it helps with the feeling of utter uselessness. Plus if I can see others feeling a little better it makes me feel better, too.

The world is a better place because of you!!  I believe in the power of a smile and kindness for physical health as well.  If our souls aren't happy, no matter how strong our immune system is, you'll be worn down pretty soon.

Let us think of these times as necessary off seasons ... you see it happen all the time with top-tier and pro athletes, they take a year off for injury or to have a child or to take care of life issues ... and they come back stronger.

I managed to do 20 minutes of easy yoga today.

There's a yoga for everyone--there are yogas that do not involve movement (meditations), face yogas, laughing yogas, breathing yogas ... I'm putting it out there as a really beneficial thing that nearly anyone in any condition can do.

I also think this is an incredible opportunity to do mental training. The possibilities and ranges of that are as limitless as S/B/R, and it's a kind of training that WILL DIRECTLY AFFECT S/B/R and make you faster/stronger/better. It's a critical edge we often don't have time to develop because let's face it, we're busy people who can often barely get in the S/B/R itself.

I have been nursing PF / Tendonitis and haven't run in 7-8 weeks. What a drag !! I have been SO ticked off that I couldn't do anything without searing heel pain. Ever so gradually the pain has gotten better. So, I gave my foot a good tape job last night then ran an easy 4 miles this morning and I think I'm going to be OK !! Praise the Lord ! I have been losing my mind...

Hang in there you guys! Happier days are ahead !!  Laughing

I just got the results of my second MRI, and it shows that I have a tear and rupture in my gastrocs.  Tomorrow I go see the orthopedic surgeon to figure out how to fix this.  I have been in pain since May when I wrecked my bike, and was misdiagnosed at first with tendonitis.  I can't wait to get this fixed, I have a 1/2 marathon in April.  I feel for all of you nursing injuries and illness , mine is a drop in the bucket compared to what some of you are going through.  I hope you all have speedy recoveries.

Torn gastrocnemius is no joke. Sorry to hear that. Judi (QueenZipp, 2nd post in this thread) struggled with torn gastrocs for quite a few months, but you won't find many people wiser or more experienced about their recovery. You might want to PM or inspire her for info/thoughts ...

I have an uneducated guess, its in the same muscle as shin splints but its either tendonitis or a tear.  I wont know until I see the doc.

I've been fighting achilles / peroneus issues, and a shim I used to protect the back of my calf over torqued my front foot /calf.

I'm going to try to do a 72 miler this weekend but it looks like IMAZ isn't going to happen.
