But, water still cool enough to be wetsuit-legal, right?? This will be my first race with an OWS, and I'd prefer it be in a wetsuit.

If it's not wet suit legal, then global warming has gotten seriously out of hand.  Laughing

It was well under the wetsuit limit last year.  Not sure specific temperature, but it was cold enough to take the wind out of me even with the wet suit.

Hah, ok.. cool.

But, for the record, there's no such thing as global warming getting too out of control... at least not until we can grow palm trees outdoors year round in Cleveland

Every year I tell myslf I will never do this race again, and just like every year, I sign up again for it, I guess nasty headwinds and freezing water doesnt mean much when HFP dangles 25% off your race

So a follow up on the 'Room' thing.  I found the country hearth in Mt. Sterling for under $70.  When I looked into the Lodge, I seem to remember they wanted a 2 night minimum.

See everyone soon!

I'm with ya.  This race is my nemesis.  When I master it, I won't do it again, but then, maybe I'll like it by then.....

Hey I have a couple of dumb questions??

1. Do they provide a timing chip strap for this race??? or do you need to bring your own??

2. Is it ok to wear a camelback on the bike portion of the tri?? or will you look dumb?

3. What time does the transition area open?

Thanks,
CJ

1. HFP provides timing chip and the ankle straps for it.

2. Whatever works for you, it won't look dumb, and no one will care.

3. Check the website.

Is there a "Deer Creek Sprint Triathlon : Official Thread"?  Couldn't find one, but if it exists I don't want to gum up the oly thread with my questions.

Been fixin' on signing up for Deer Creek (and other HFP series races) for a few months now, and I just ordered a wetsuit rental, so I guess I better get registered for the race.  Smile  The extra buoyancy of the wetsuit will hopefully help during this, my first-ever, possibly panic inducing, OW tri.  Never used a wetsuit before and haven't swam in OW since I was a kid, so I'm gonna try out the suit this Saturday at Deer Creek.  Also going to try out the grassy run area and the bike course.  Swim is almost twice as far as I'm used to (I've done 2 reverse sprint tris, both with 400m pool swims at the end), so we'll see how the 750 goes, I'll just focus on being calm and taking it easy.  Not so sure about those 2 hills everyone mentions on the bike route...

4 questions:

1. Are there showers?  I've read online that there are "changing booths" at the park, but no reference to showers.  Hmmm.

2. Does anyone set flip-flops (or other footwear) at the swim end to avoid the unpleasant-ness of the run up the beach/gravel/asphalt hill to T1 with bare feet?  Maybe wear water shoes, is that allowed? idk

3. Where exactly do they set up the transition area?  If you're looking at it via satellite view on Google Maps, which parking lot area will we be setting up in?

4. Is getting off the bike and walking a bit up the hills acceptable, would I be disqualified?  Not planning on it, just would like to know in case I just can't push through the day of.

Lastly, I'm thinking of joining in on the LMFAO outfit idea.  Would y'all be embarassed if one of the last finishers (me) is in a bit of LMFAO gear?

Have a good one and see ya' out there!

~Melissa

Hey Melissa, welcome

I can only answer #4 - yes, it is perfectly acceptable, to the best of my knowledge, but I don't think you'll need to worry about it. Just make good use of all of the gears on your bike and you should be fine Shift into the small ring up front and the bigger cogs in the back before you feel the need to, perhaps even go one cog on the rear larger than you feel you need to. You'll go slower, but you'll go up easier..... and to paraphrase something I saw someone say on here once before "It isn't how fast you get up the hill that matters, it's what you do once you're at the top".

Good luck!

1. Are there showers?  I've read online that there are "changing booths" at the park, but no reference to showers.  Hmmm.  They are usually closed, locked, or otherwise unadvisable...  One word for the "bathhouse" at DC:  icky.  Rinse off in the water afterwards if you're desparate.

2. Does anyone set flip-flops (or other footwear) at the swim end to avoid the unpleasant-ness of the run up the beach/gravel/asphalt hill to T1 with bare feet?  Maybe wear water shoes, is that allowed? idk It's really not that bad.

3. Where exactly do they set up the transition area?  If you're looking at it via satellite view on Google Maps, which parking lot area will we be setting up in? (Recalling from memory, not map) It would be the eastern set of parking lot.  There is a gravel one to the west where you park your car, then a paved one where you put your stuff.  It will be easy to spot once you're there.

4. Is getting off the bike and walking a bit up the hills acceptable, would I be disqualified?  Not planning on it, just would like to know in case I just can't push through the day of. I don't think you'd be disqualified.  You might get run over by some hot-shots who think they're the bees-knees, but as long as you're under your own power, I don't see why you should.

Lastly, I'm thinking of joining in on the LMFAO outfit idea.  Would y'all be embarassed if one of the last finishers (me) is in a bit of LMFAO gear? Do it, do it, do it!  One of our costumed participants will not be able to participate, although she'll still be there in costume.  The more, the merrier!

Have a good one and see ya' out there!

~Melissa

"5.1 Propulsion. All bicycles shall be propelled only by human force and human power. Other than pushing a bicycle, any propulsive action brought on by use of the hands is prohibited. Any violation of this section shall result in disqualification."

"5.2 Forward Progress. Participants shall not make any forward progress unaccompanied by their bicycle. If a bicycle is rendered inoperable, a participant may proceed on the cycling course, running or walking, while pushing or carrying the bicycle, so long as the bicycle is pushed or carried in a manner not to obstruct or impede the progress of other participants. Any violation of this section shall result in disqualification."

Pushing your bike is specifically allowed by the rules.  There's no shame in it.  I've seen plenty of people walking their bikes up hills that looked 100x fitter than me.  That said, they aren't that bad at Deer Creek.  There are two hills near the end of the bike route, both of which are preceded by a downhill, so you have a little momentum going into them.  Total elevation climb for the entire loop is around 110 feet.  Here's an elevation chart from the last time I rode it:

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/8094/deercreek.jpg

It makes the hills look worse than are.  Each is around 40-50 feet over around 1/2 mile.

This can count for the official thread

You really should try swimming in the wetsuit BEFORE rae day.

The "hills" are typical Ohio rolling hills.

I like to have footwear on the beach - keeps my toes warmer.  just walk out of them before lining up.

showers?  like robin said - use teh lake

transition is 200 meters up the hill along the sidewalk passed the beach house to the parking lot.  keep going the same direction (away from water) on exit.

You are welcome to walk the bike the entire race - i ran mine 3 miles with a flat tire years ago (didn't exactly win tat race).  do stay as for right as you can when walking

wear a costume.  i might - but mine won't be LMFAO (i don't like them)

Thanks for the replies everyone!  My rental wetsuit will be arriving this Thursday and I'm making the trip to Deer Creek this weekend with my hubby to try it out.

Can't wait for race day!

I just signed up myself.  I've done 2 sprints and that was twelve years ago.  I've lost 90 pounds in the last 5 months, and this is my reward!!
