That way people ride bikes more, their health gets better, maybe they take the public transportation system so it improves? If you think I'm being snarky, check my logs, I commute by bike several times per week when I am in the Austin office. Why is it that we're so tied to cars? If you offer the infrastructure that I an get there in less than the hour and a half it currently takes, when it takes 45-50 in my car, I'll consider it How many miles are we talking? It takes me 1:15 door to door on my bike. It takes between 30 and 60 minutes in my car (depending on traffic). I get a workout, spend less on gas and get door to door in between 15 and 45 minutes longer than it takes to drive. If we're talking 40 miles. Then yes, that's not really doable. I would never honestly advocate a system to punish people for driving every day. 24 miles. No safe way to ride it, all city miles. No bike lanes available Would be riding through South Central L.A. in the dark (or, frankly in the light) on a 6 lane street with traffic in the parking lane travelling at high rates of speed. If I survivied, guesstimate would take 2 hours. Public commute requires a drive to the train station (which is not on the way to work) - 20 minutes. Wait for and take one train to second train - 30 minutes. Train 2 to downtown L.A. - 40 minutes. Walk to office - 10 minutes |
