55 | Subject: RE: We Don't Just Tri - We Do Group - Open Hello Tom,I'd like to join your group too. I'm completely new to triathlons, but I like to try new things, optimist and stubborn and therefore I usually achieve my goals. Personal:My name is Jurga, I'm 42, married, 3 kids (the oldest is already in college), work as a chemist in personal care products plant. Originally I'm from Lithuania, but for last 12 years we live in NE Ohio. Athletic experience:Did some swimming in high school, some mountaineering in college and that was it until last summer, when I participated in local sprint triathlon and was hooked. Fitness level:Nothing to brag about. No problems with weight, but no muscles either. I swim 3 times/week, run 10 mi/weekend and take 1 brick class at rec center.Swimming : 1 mile in approx 30-35 min in a pool. Never got exact time, because constantly loose count of lapsCycling: sore point. Still have to learn how to go down steep hill without slamming on brakes or how to take sharp angles. With Ohio weather I don't expect start riding bike sooner than April, and don't have stationary bike at home. In a gym they lock bikes we use in brick classes and the only ones left are those with reclining position. But I'm optimistic, already found Break Neck hill nearby for practicing in the springRunning: unfortunately down to 9:30/mi. Last fall it was 8:30. I hope speed gets back when days get longer and I can go for a run after work.Goals:July - OLY in CincinnatiSeptember - half marathon in AkronAlso, 2 sprint triathlons and I would like to try trail runningWhy I'm asking to join mentoring group:To train more efficiently: I feel that I have to use training time wisely, with family and work I doubt I can do more than 6-7 h week even at the peak of training. To be supported and to support others: triathlon would be impossible without it and I promise to do my best both on receiving and giving sides. |

Sounds like you have a great plan and a good slate of races. I did Longmont last year as my first race. Weather wasn't great and the reservoir water was pretty choppy and cold - but the race went on. Funny story about Longmont is while I was waiting in line to use the porta john (as one is like to do before a race) I heard this gentlemen speaking with an accent and voice that I recognized. So I asked - your name doesn't happen to be Simon is it. It was. He was my coach for the Arizona Ironman. I had only ever spoken to him on the phone and had never met him. Small world no doubt. I'm also scheduled for the Boulder 70.3. Perhaps sometime over the next several months we could get together for a ride or run. Heck, there are a couple of us in the area - we could do a group run or ride. Are you doing the Denver Spring or Olympic? Seems like you might be progressing from Sprint to Oly to HIM this summer - is that correct? Which of the races to consider your most important - your A race? Determining that will determine how you lay out your base and build training periods. I'm looking forward to sharing in your progress as you reach your goals. BT makes it very easy to upload your workouts from TP. I usually upload to TP first and then just transfer to BT. Welcome again. Thom Again welcome. Hello Thom, I would like to join the group. My name is Jeff and I am 35 yrs old. I recently relocated to Denver just about 9 mos. ago from Seattle, WA. This year will be my first attempt at triathlon. I have committed to the Longmont Open sprint, Denver Triathlon, and IM Boulder for now. I have always been primarily a runner but fell into the sport up in Seattle and trained with a local team (primarily swim workouts) but never committed to a race. I only did one Half marathon race in Seattle last year prior to the hectic relocation. All of my training schedules are typically ones that I modify from different websites but they seem to work for me. I train with a HRT and a power meter on the bike (Kurt Kinetic and fluid trainer). I also use training peaks to log all of my training. Right now my typical week is 6 days of training with 2 swims, 3 bikes, and 3 runs. My volume is improving and I am not pushing too hard since I want to build a good base before working on speed. More than anything I want to connect with someone like yourself that can give me good advice and let me know their thoughts on my training progression and newbee mistakes to avoid. Thanks! Jeff
Thom, A group ride would be cool and I think very beneficial for a new guy like me. I really dont ride outside too much unless I use some of the trail systems that run through Denver. I just havent felt that safe on the roads entirely by myself. Great story about Longmont! I heard that is a good but smaller venue too so maybe a good first attempt. That is actually really great that you are also doing Boulder 70.3. I have some questions that you can probably help me out with on how to progress with specific training for the 70.3 while also trying to prepare for the shorter races. I think my A race is probably going to be Boulder. I initially thought I would be doing the sprint at Denver but now that I have read your other posts, it might be better to do the Oly since my next race will be the HIM. I'd like to share my basic schedule to see if I am on the right track. Here is what I am doing now: Mon: Bike 15-20 miles Tue: AM-Swim, PM- Run 3-4 miles easy Wed: Bike 20-25 miles Thur: Long run 6-8, or tempo/ speed work day Fri: AM-Swim, PM- Run 3-4 miles easy Sat: Choice- Long Bike- 40-60 miles or long run 10-12 miles I am trying to hit 2100 yards on the swim and currently am building up to 2500 yards per session with a goal of 3000 or so by the time I hit my specific HIM training. I dig around for swim workouts on line as there are plenty to choose from. My favorite is 10x100's or 4x200's and 4x100's with nice long warmups and cooldowns to build my endurance. A good week for me right now it 4000 or so swim yards, 16-20 miles run, and 55-80 miles on the bike. I tried to load all of my TP stuff to BT last night but its only going to show some of my latest runs and wont show any swim training. Here is the link to my TP account if you want to take a look and let me know. I appreciate the help! www.trainingpeaks.com/gasattack Jeff

I am in the market as well. Right now I'm using the saddle that came with the bike. When I first started with it last year my anatomy didn't take to it so well. Though this past weekend I did two hours on it and didn't have any problems - so maybe it will all be good. Something you might check on - my LBS (local bike shop) has a Cobb saddle trial program. You pay $25 and can try any of the Cobb saddles for week. If you buy one - then the 25 bucks go to the purchase price. I'm thinking about taking them up on it. Another saddle I was considering a Koobi saddle - http://www.koobi.com/.They are a local Colorado Springs Company. I just can't seem to make up my mind. Once I do, I'll update here.Really? I was narrowing it down between the Adamo or the Cobb V-max (leaning towards the Cobb due to the customer support). I've heard good things about both. Right now I'm riding on a Specialized Romin Expert. This is what I was fitted with when I bought my bike. Its ok but I get numb after 30-40 minutes in the saddle. I have had ridden for over 3+ hours on it with no trouble but obviously not in aero position the whole time. I know that wont cut it for the Boulder HIM! Yes, I am glad to belong to a group of people that have the same motivation that I do. Don't feel like a geek on the data Dan. I am the same way. I record every single bike and run on my Gamin 305 that I do outside and log all power max and average for every set of every bike workout that I do so I am right there with you. I love graphs! Jeff Thanks Thom. I'll check that out. I was also looking at Trisports.com as they have a trial program that works much the same as you describe. I'll probably try the Cobb soon as Dan describes with the Adamo, there seems to be a big break-in period. Jeff

Veteran 260 Monument, Colorado | Subject: RE: We Don't Just Tri - We Do Group - Open Jurga, Welcome to the group. Lithuania - another one of the places I did not get a chance to visit when I was stationed in Europe but always heard good things about from my colleagues who did visit. These groups are great places to learn, gain motivation and give encouragement. It looks like you are currently doing plenty of training as well as training in the various disciplines. The key to being successful in completing a triathlon is structuring your workouts and having a purpose for each workout, each week, and each phase of your training cycle. An OLY in July is completely dooable. You already have some experience in the sport so it is not completely new. You can use the sprints as prep work for the OLY if you wanted to. I would recommend at least one prior to the OLY. You will have time between the OLY to recover and then build toward your Half Marathon in September. Your run time will recover as you regain your fitness - faster and easier than the effort it took you to get to that time in the first place. Your body just needs to "remember". As you look at your goals - which race is you goal race? Do you have specific finishing goals - e.g. do you just want to finish and learn what it takes to do an OLY or a HM - or is there a time you'd like to achieve. With your Sprints - would you like to improve upon your last performance? Or are you still in the learing mode and that is key. Answers to these questions help you to structure your workouts. Take a look at the training plans here on BT - or on other sites. There are lots of resources. From what you are doing now - you would probably have enough fitness and preparation to be able to complete an OLY - but if you want to also put forth a good effort you will want to add some structure. As an example - between now and April you have time for 3 base periods, 2 build periods and a taper period followed by a recovery period. The numbers of base and builds you get depends on whether you do 3 or 4 week periods. What you do in those periods does not have to be complicated - you focus base on developing aerobic capacity and technique, you use the build periods to focus on stregth and speed components, and you use tapers to get ready for your event. The workouts in those periods help to achieve those goals. I, like most everybody in the group, am limited in how much time I can actually devote to the sport. In general, I plan two workouts per day during the week that are one hour in duration with longer workouts reserved for the weekend. Now, I rarely acheive that. Each day I have a key workout that I want to ensure I do. For example, today. I have planned a FARTLEK run followed by a strength workout and an evening cycle. My schedule is already messed up for the day, so I will only get the bike ride done. I ran on Monday, swam yesterday - so I need to get my bike ride in. I'll adjust my schedule to get my Fartlek run in tomorrow. Since I am in the beginning of my Build, I want to make sure I get that important workout done. A lot here to digest but wanted to share some thoughts. Welcome to the group. Thom |

55 | Subject: RE: We Don't Just Tri - We Do Group - Open Thom, Thanks for the welcome and push in the right direction. I definitely will start thinking about structuring workouts. Answering to your question about goals - yes, my main goal of the year is Oly and have time goal for it, only it is purely theoretical 3-3:30h. What do you write in your training logs and what do you get out of it? I bought a fancy notebook to record miles and times, but dropped after one week. It was just easier just forget bad workout rather than record it. |

What do you write in your training logs and what do you get out of it? I bought a fancy notebook to record miles and times, but dropped after one week. It was just easier just forget bad workout rather than record it. Jurga, I'm like many triathletes and cyclists - I collect technical metrics from my various devices and upload them. I do an immediate check to make sure that I met certain parameters, e.g cadence on the bike, step cadence when running. I'll also check to make sure that I maintained the correct HR zone for the workout I did. I make comments on general conditions of the workout. I might make a note about how I felt, e.g that my legs felt heavy (what did I do earlier that day - is this the second workout, did I not sleep well). I might make a note about conditions of the course I ran or biked. When I use a coach, the notes help him or her understand the results of the workout and to set the focus of the coming workouts. When I am self coaching I talk to myself so that I get on "paper" what I'm thinking, feeling, what I did the same or different and what the effect was, I'll also make notes about why a workout might not have been as long as planned or executed as planned. There really is no right or wrong on what to record. For BT - you might make comments or ask questions in your log that other members of the board can read and answer. Give it a try - on your next workout, just record the technical metrics - how long, how fast, etc. then write down what you felt during the workout. Thom |

I had plans to get in a good workout at lunch - that didn't happen so I did a bike trainer workout after work today. That is sure to keep me up tonight. The good thing is I got the work out in - the bad thing is that I'll not get to sleep and most likely not get up for an early workout tomorrow. Ebb - flow. Concerning the group name - thanks - and I hope that everyone who has chosen to join us achieves their goal/s. Thom |

Between dinner and late work preparing for the next day, I only got to do a bike workout on Tuesday. Tomorrow, I leave for an overnight campout with my son and his scout troop which means at some point Sunday I will have to get in a long work workout. Tough to juggle all the time demands. Happy to see that the group is growing. |
