Mandi's goals:

--Sarasota Marathon (Sarasota, FL) March 4, 2007 (1st marathon)

--Danskin Triathlon .25M/9M/2M (Orlando, FL) May 13,2007 (1st tri)

--If the first one goes well, possibly the Disney Triathlon (I think it's Olympic distance) in Sept of 2007

--New York City Marathon November 2007 (I'm automatic because I got a lottery spot last year but had to defer due to injury)

I'm also running Gasparilla Half Marathon on Feb 18th.

I've got the running part down! I'm just nervous about getting better at swimming!

I guess I should also mention that I'm a VERY slow runner, but I can run a long way

As far as running goes, my goal is always just to finish! However, I love doing races on New Year's day when every other 26 year old is in bed hung over. I can usually win my age group with ridiculously slow times on days like that....

Wow.
I'm feeling a little inadequate because I'm only doing a spring 10 miler and not a marathon. :-)

Steve--this should make you feel better--I have YET to swim as a training tool. The last time I was in a pool was over the summer when I needed to cool off while tanning. The pool at my gym just opened this week, and I have been too nervous to even get in it! I know how to swim, as in, I can stay afloat, but I really don't know how to swim for fitness.

Ok, sorry, haven't been able to keep up with this due to work, but I'll try to check it more often. I'm not sure I've posted in the right spot, so I guess I'll find out after I hit submit. Do you have to go to the last message and hit reply, or use the reply at the top of the page?

You all are truly inspiring! I'm just hoping to finish a sprint tri and you all are doing marathons and 10k's! My events are as follows:

- mini sprint tri at the YMCA on March 10th. It is a 20 min swim, 20 min stationary bike and 20 min run. Should help me understand what I've gotten myself into!
- 5k St. Patrick's day run (for fun!)
- danskin tri, July15
- tri for the cure, Aug 5th.
Might do a duathlon as well in May.

My 2 other girlfriends and I hired a trainer at Bally's and we are going to start swimming with her tomorrow. The trainer is also a swim coach and we are hoping to get some good pointers to make the swim a little easier since it seems that swimming is all about form and not necessarily strength and endurance. We have 18 sessions with her so will probably follow that workout plan for awhile. I need to update the training log online here. Will start doing that.

Hans, my streets are covered in snow too and the weather has been below 30 so I have been going to the gym, but it's supposed to be above 40 degrees this week so I'm hoping to get outside and run :-)

Have a great day everyone!

The list of confirmed races is no on top of the 1st post of the forum so we can all keep tabs on each other. You all are doing some great races. Kelly let me know what you have planned and I will add them. If I messed up anyone's races PM me and I will fix it. Have a good training week.

Robert,

Here a question about race attire. If you swim without a wetsuit, do you keep the same uniform on the whole race? I just imagine that you would be really uncomfortable riding on the bike in a wet suit (not wetsuit, that would just be silly). When I see races on TV it looks like they don't change and just wear the same thing the whole race.

Steve the only race I have changed for is IM. I figured there was enough suffering on the bike no reason to chance having a problem. All the 1/2 IM and shorter races I just wear the same thing for the whole race. Remember that I live in Florida and most of the year it is hot and humid so you are wet from all of the sweat anyway. If you are a competitive person than you will be frustrated giving up free time changing clothes(very few people change in the shorter/faster events).

So, you're saying I shouldn't bring a garment bag with a different outfit for each leg of the race? :-)

I bet you were. I can't even fathom attempting an IM. Hopefully, in a couple of years it will be a reality.
Will this be your 2nd? You mentioned that you did IM FL in 2005.

Steve the longer races are actually I think a little easier. The ½’s and Olympic races are tough because you can go pretty hard the whole time. I don’t have the fitness to go that hard at IM. It seems like a long training day. I will give the IM distance a few more years to see if I can get fit enough to actually race one. Cour d’Alene will be my 2nd IM. It’s is fun give it a try!

Where do I go to stop from getting an email every time someone posts to the forum? I don't remember clicking yes for that option, and I can't find any language in the options that would lead to not getting emails?!

Thanks

Mandi,

Click on "Control Panal" just above the Welcome screen. Then click "Unsubscribe to Threads" and follow it from there.

I guess we're just too chatty and keep filling up email boxes. I changed mine this morning.

Steve

I have a mtn and road bike. There are a couple of tri's in Colorado that have mtn biking instead of road biking, so I might try one of them, but I looked at the finishing times for the sprint tri they did last year and it took most people an hour just to do the mtn biking portion! Plus, I'll need to buy a wetsuit as the lakes up here are quite cold! My road bike is a Fuji Team and I broke down and traded my double chain ring in for a triple late last summer as I was starting to get dropped on the hills around here. The triple has helped, but I do need to ride more. Do I need to get those funky tri handle bars for my bike?

The wetsuit will not only keep you warm, but make you faster The aero bars are free speed on the bike, but they are a little tricky to get used to using. Make sure you practice first. The mountain bike Tri sounds like fun! go for it. Glad you are riding.

It has been soooooo cold lately. I bought my new road bike when it was warm and haven't even been able to take it out yet. It's killing me.
I did 30 minutes on the the elliptical last night. BORING!!!!! It will be in the 20s this afternoon so I'm going to try and head out for a run.
I heard it's in the 60s & 70s down in Florida.

How is everyone else doing?

Mandi, what kind of mileage are you doing now to get ready for your marathon?

My last long run is this Saturday. We are doing 22-24 miles. I train with a Jeff Galloway group. You do run/walk intervals for the long runs, including the marathon.

I run straight through anything under a 10K, but for training, its always the run/walk interval. I don't want stay with that forever, I do want to work up to running all distances straight through. I started doing the intervals because I hurt my IT Band, and it has really helped me rehab it and get back into shape. It's a very very crappy injury and I want to avoid doing it again at ALL COSTS!

I'll run a half marathon the following weekend, and then the weekend before the marathon just a short 8 miler. This thing is creeping up on me!!! I'm starting to get a little nervous about it!!

BTW--it was 70-something and BEAUTIFUL in Tampa today I have lived in a place where it snows (Albuquerque, NM), so I know what its like, and I wouldn't trade Tampa for anything in the world!!

Mandi that's awesome. I can't wait to hear how you do.

I bet some swim cross training will help that IT band problem.

Hi Group

It’s going fine here in Denmark. We have had the warmest and wettest November/December/January since 1873, but now the normal winter seems to come. More snow today and tomorrow, but cold and sunny in the weekend. Daytime temperature will come up to 28°F, and night-time down to 14°F.
Still haven’t had a chance to setup my bike and trainer. And I need to start swimming too.

Mandi, sure you are a little nervous. But trust me; your first marathon will be something big. Take your time; enjoy the race, the spectators and the show. I don’t know how marathons are in Florida but here in Europe, there are more than 1,000,000 spectators along the route cheering you up. Kids are giving you high-five, Samba orchestras are mandatory; it all helps to bring you all the way to the finish line.

Greetings from snowy Denmark
Hans
