It went good. I don't have my times yet. I finished in 1 hour 21 minutes. I sucked at the bike however. I woke up on Saturday with a burning sore throat and headache too. I really need to practice more bike to run bricks. I did better on the run this time. It was really short sprint 16 laps of the pool, 8 miles on the bike, 2 mile run.

Congrats on your tri.  I'm not sure what those times mean, but I'm sure they're great!  What are average times for each leg of the race.  In my running races I average about 8 min miles for a 5k, between 8:30 and 9 for a 10k, and 9 min (or a little over) for a half marathon.

Also, I've started looking up swim gear - does it matter for a swim cap whether it is latex, lycra, or silicone?  And for goggles -  does it matter what kind?  Lynne I have looked up the ones you mentioned before.

Thanks Jeslin. I think 1 hour 21 minutes is a bit slow compared to how small the course was and last years times. No worries though, I just have so much fun doing them.

The googles I bought were from Speedo. They are $15.00.

I have recently gone back to using latex caps from lycra as they keep my hair dryer.

I'm not sure about average times, but your times look good. Running after swimming and biking can be quite different though, as I am finding out. The more you can run, after spending time on the bike will help, but it looks like you got a good base to start on. As far as swim caps, I would have no clue. I bought a silicone one online last week and will try it out on my first lake swim this Saturday.

Well Lynn, that's why a lot of us do these things, for the fun of them. I know the training can sometimes get old and tiring, but the races can be so much fun. Sometimes it's the only time I some of my friends.

Thanks a bunch! I shaved 9 minutes off of my time from last year, but the swim time was still embarrassing. I still freak out when people hit or kick me by accident during the swim. Thank goodness for bike and run! I also took the plunge and did the whole event sockless for the first time, and the time savings was well worth a few tiny blisters. If you're desperate for extra time, I recommend trying it.

On the swim cap front, I hate them all, but the silicon and cloth ones tend to be slightly less likely to pull my hair out.

Way to go Jamie! My chest is burning at the thought of another tri just now.

BUT! Jamie and myself are BOTH looking for swim drills? I've never, ever done drills in my life. I've always just swam for distance and time. I do use a pull and a kickboard occasionally, I would LOVE to buy paddles but totally unsure as to what kind I would need and I only swim freestyle coz I suck at all the others. I would like if anyone out there has some drills, and also if you could break them down so I can understand them. I honestly never knew there as so much "lingo" in triathlons. It took me forever to realize what on earth T1 one meant *blush*

What does T1 mean. I have seen that in books, but I honestly don't know what it means. Great job Jamie and Lynne.

T1 is your first transition -- swim to bike. (2nd transition, bike to run, is T2.) Until this past race, I'd always used transition to recover & regroup. At the beginning of the month I had a 3:19 T1, when most other folks in my age group did about 1:20, and I would have been 3 places higher overall if I'd shaved those two minutes off my transition time. Painful lesson. Hence, no socks or gloves this past weekend. I just put on band-aids, stuck powder in my shoes and wrapped my handlebars. Now if only my swim were even as fast as the top half of the group I'd be doing great. The only way I swim fast is with a wetsuit, though.

I was 6 laps ahead of the only 2 other people in my wave this past weekend. They passed me on the 2nd loop of the bike but I beat them both in the run. Phew.

SWEET! That had to feel great to see yourself closing on them after they passed you before. Revenge is a powerful motivator!

It really is. I was gobsmacked that they both caught up to me on the bike. I was so mad at myself afterwards. I am definitely looking for a new bike, one that weighs less than 40lbs. Urgh.

Hahaha. Sorry. Probably a British term. Means dumbfounded, shocked, upset.......

But literally, someone smacked me in the gob (mouth) when they passed. That's what it felt like.

Congrats on the races ladies!  Sounds like you both had a good time, and that's what matters the most!

Someone mentioned swimming drills.  I'm not big into drills in the water.  There are plenty of people that would call me stupid for saying that, but that's just how I am.  There are plenty of different drills that you can do.  The drills that you would choose depend primarily upon what you want to improve on.  I personally believe in doing lots of swimming sets centered on either speed or endurance, dependent upon what I want to improve on.

Here is my take on drills. I'm like drew and don't do many. The one that I do do. (LOL-he said do do) has helped me learn to breathe on my left side. For all my life I have only taken breaths on my right side, and this helped me get a little more comfortable with bilateral breathing. I will try to explain as best I can.

I kick and keep both hands in front of me and I pull only with the left arm and take a breath and return my left arm to the front of me with my right arm. I kick a few times and pull again with the left arm and take a breath. I do not use my right arm at all. It is very ackward at first and is still not easy for me but it is getting better. Those that are good swimmers say I may need to breathe on my weak side only if there are waves and wind that make it hard on my strong side. I hope this may help someone as it has helped me, but then again I am pretty weak in the swim part.

I usually concentrate on a 4 strokes then breathe on my right. As I go longer my form breaks down I end up going with 3 strokes and then alternate sides I breathe on. Does that sound ok?

I do the four stroke breath too. My coach in Scotland taught me that. I cannot for the life of me breathe on my right side.

I was looking more for drills that I can count laps easily in. Like sets. Maybe that's what I'm looking for, sets? I've never done these before and I'm crap with the lingo.

I just wear my Ironman watch and hit the lap button on every 100yds in the pool. Great way for me to keep track of my laps, but then i keep track of all my times while running and biking. Don't know what I would do without my watches.

Ok. I have one of those watches (I think) where is the lap button?

Mines the button on the bottom of my watch. I just hit it every 2 laps so I can keep track of the yards I swim. It sure is easy to lose track when you swim back and forth for a while.
