Geez... since this IS the BEGINNER triathlete web presence, you'd think they'd have some ranking system in their race logs to indicate whether the race you are logging would be a good one for beginners. Or we could just start a new thread and grab it for ourselves.
I nominate the one I just did- Lake Compounce in CT. It was small and friendly. No surprises. You can google it or read any one of the 4 race reports on this site, 3 of which were generated by Athena/Clydesdale posters.
Anyone else?

P.S. Jayne- the "friendly laborador" approach to race day worked well for me too, although I think some people thought I was on something. Also- post race stupidity set in- I stared at my swim time for like 5 min trying to subtract 5 minutes from it to get my actual time. LOL.

I just saw this vendor advertised on the USAT newsletter -- http://www.tripinions.com/  USAT has partnered with Ultramax Events to start this website earlier this year.  You can post messages and rank such things as course design & safety, event amenities, venue, organization, volunteer & staff support and the difficulty of the bike and run course.  Pretty cool!  I emailed them and suggested that they add a "Beginner Friendly?" ranking.

Hey Melissa - if you are dreaming of doing a tri, or even one leg of a tri, you can do it. Even if there's some learning involved, like learning to swim or something, you can do it.

Well, Jayne, you hit the proverbial nail right on the head. For me, it means learning to ride a bike. I grew up in a very rural area of Tennessee with gravel roads and no sidewalks. Since it was in the middle of the country, there really wasn't anywhere to ride TO, so I just never learned how to ride when I was a kid. I had just started making a serious effort to learn about 18 months ago or so and then started having health issues that have subsequently been resolved ... well, 2 surgeries later they're resolved. LOL

My current plan of attack is to build up my running time. I'm currently in week 5 of the conservative couch to 5k plan here. Once I get that tackled, then I'll focus on learning to ride a bike. Lastly, I'll work on improving my swimming and perhaps get some coaching with that. My current dream goal is to do at least a super sprint tri by 2009. EEK! Did I just write that?! LOL

It was reading Jayne's that convinced me to do a tri. I wanted to when I reached my goal weight but time and occaision conspired against me and I put back on all of the weight. I would have waited, no doubt, years until trying to do one but after reading the book I thought why not start now then get better as I loose. It's a real inspiration and I use many of the ideas when I'm feeling scared and negative. It gives me just the lift I need to say 'stuff it' and go and do it!

Hey y'all,

Sorry I've been absent from the thread for a while.

Melissa - let me know how your quest to learn the art and science of bicycle riding. I would be interested in how you do it and what works/doesn't work. I could end up picking your brains for something in a book some time. With your permission of course.

Kate - good on ya for going for it! Keep up the good fun,

I did my first HIM Sunday...and something in Jayne's book about her first HIM stuck with me the week before and even now.."which half of me is iron?"  I think that is so funny. The stories or reports of each of her/your races is so fun to read. I think it is my right side is the part that is half iron as my left side has caused me lots of problems since my bike crash..knee always hurts and seperated shoulder acts up now and again.

Since I registered as an Athena I placed second and even third in my AG....cool to be older and heavier...most you are one or the other. Well it was small HIM so I was 2/2 of Athenas but 3/4 in the 45-49 AG.

Jayne - I've finished your book and really enjoyed the non greyhound perspective of triathlon. My wife is now reading it. I hope she gets your message about feeling comfortable in your own skin!! We plan to train for winter and do a sprint together in the spring. We have enjoyed the cross training, and thanks for the motivation and encouragement. - Thanks, TD

Hey, KathyG - congrats on your first HIM! whoo hoo! I see you're in MA -where were you racing? How was the weather? I think that after the crash you had, you get to consider your whole self as made of iron.

Tridork - what a great handle! I wish I'd thought of it myself. That'll be great if you and your wife get to do a tri together. The odds of my husband and I doing a tri together are approximately equal to the odds of us each growing a second head.

It is a source of constant wonder to me that although I have apparently inspired hundreds of people to overcome their fears and anxieties and compete in their first triathlons, marathons, century rides, and other amazing athletic endeavors, I can't get anyone in my immediate family to even consider the notion. I guess they know me too well to be taken in by my fast-talking palaver.

Cheers

No problem whatsoever, Jayne. I actually ended up flip-flopping things though. I found a swim class that was just starting up this week, so I signed up for it. I do hope to go bike shopping within the next few weeks. I'm hoping to find a good deal on one since it's year-end. I have no clue what I'm going to do after that though. LOL I'll keep you posted.

jayne, loved your book! it has been really helpful in me believing that i can do a triathlon. i am just learning to swim (haha, yeah me for being one of the oldest in the class, lol) and am recovering from an injury in feb (training for a 10k pre triathlon apsirations). but thanks to your book, it gave me the belief that triathlon isn't just a sport for the smaller girls. i will look forward to any future books you may write!

Hey kimmitri,

That's awesome. I look forward to hearing how your swimming lessons go. It's so great to be able to get comfortable in the water and enjoy the amazing feeling of it.

You could get some advice from Mosc11 on how to get your family to participate in a tri.  The Mosc crew made up about half of all the people in the Sandy Hook (NJ) tri this Sept.!!!  Even her mom did it!!!

Good for you, Mosc11 - I don't know how you did it. I might have a chance at getting my dad to do a tri, but he's worried about getting injured. He has had some injuries in the past that are pretty weird and rare, so I don't blame him... My husband doesn't much like to swim, hasn't ridden his bike in at least 8 years, and won't run either. My best girlfriend only likes swimming in tropical water; my mom is completely phobic about water in general... and on it goes, and on it goes.

Yeah, most of my family and friends are like "oh, Jayne, she's already crazy, she'll try anything." So they don't feel obliged to try what I'm trying...

When I first read your book Jayne, it felt a little like reading a biography about me. We both came to the sport with skepticism and amazed ourselves (and the folks around us) by continuing to succeed. When I get a little frustrated with myself about progress, I go back to re-reading your book to remind me how far I've come. It's helped me keep my motivation so many times!

Thanks!!

Hey panout,

I'm super stoked that you've been able to use the book in that way. I have actually used it myself to get myself remotivated - is that weird or somehow incestuous?

I've also been forced to follow some of my own advice over the last couple of years as I've regained weight and gotten slower rather than faster. Stuff like not being self-conscious, not caring about my times as much as about enjoying the day, all like that. It's hard to walk the walk sometimes, but I'm glad I wrote the book because it holds me to my own beliefs.

I've been going through a pretty tough time the last 3 months with a slew of mysterious symptoms - continuous headache, body aches, fatigue, sore throats, swollen glands, all kinds of craziness. Docs are baffled. The worst thing is that every time I try even gentle exercise - like 30 minutes of easy walking - I seem to feel much worse afterwards. So I'm not really rockin' right now in the triathlon sense. In fact, just hearing about other people's training and racing, or seeing people riding their bikes or running makes me ache with longing. I miss it like crazy. But I'm trying to follow my own advice and be really patient with myself. This too shall pass.

Cheers

Jayne, I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Have your doctors considered any autoimmune disorders life CFIDS (chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome)? Just wondering as my mom suffers from it with similar symptoms. I hope you feel better very soon!

Hey crabsrule and sealiongirl,

Thanks for the good wishes. I have definitely been suspecting chronic fatigue syndrome for a few weeks now. Now that I'm into the fourth month of feeling like crap most every day, and the symptoms are all kind of lining up... But my doctor isn't very exerienced in general, and I suspect she's not very familiar with CFS. Last time I brought it up, she said something like, "Well, that's something we would have to consider if your symptoms don't clear up over time." I'm seeing her again on Wednesday so we'll see what she says then.

If it's not chronic fatigue then it's a combination of early-ish menopause and really bad allergies. That's what I figure.

I'll keep y'all posted...

Cheers

Go get a second opinion now.  A few years ago, I developed mysterious bruising.  I got a flu shot and I had a bruise the size of my palm.  First doc wouldn't belive me, (some times we hit ourselves and don't know where, like yours inexperienced.) Second doc did a blood test, and admited me to the ER.  I was within a day or 2 of developing internal bleeding from a form of acute hemophelia.  Always go get a second opinion if you think something is wrong, you know your body better than anyone.

Hey everybody,

Thanks for all the kind words over the last few weeks. Sorry I haven't been online to respond in a more timely fashion. I've been feeling somewhat better lately, most of the time. The upside of that is, well, I feel better. Not better enough to train, but better enough to get up in the morning and carry out a day's activities most every day.

The downside is that I've been able to work more hours at my increasingly demanding day job. In fact, I'm procrastinating right now by posting instead of working on a grant that's due JANUARY 4TH!!!!! (Dear Governor Schwarzenegger - if you really want to do some good for the great state of California, you could start by forbidding state agencies from setting grant application due dates in the first week of January)

I love the holidays, shopping frenzies, Christmas music and all, so the idea of working over the weekend leading up to Christmas is a huge thorn in my posterior.

For all of you patiently waiting for book two, keep breathing deeply and repeating "Fall 2008, Fall 2008." It's really not my fault. It's a long saga of publishing acquisitions and scheduling drama.

Anyhow, I hope to be more responsive in the New Year. Have a Merry Christmas or whatever winter holiday you like to celebrate, and a 2008 that's full of fun, energy, and movement!

Cheers
Jayne
