today i get in the pool/water for the first time since Sept.  I hope i can swim more than 150 yards.  The wife wants to give swimming a try.  I don't know what will be the biggest challenge, helping her swim or me swimming.

Good luck getting in the water today. So do you think your wife will ever want to do a triathlon?

Do you follow the Hard Core Workout from the site? I noticed you and I did most of the same core exercises today. Meg had given me this workout a while ago (maybe you gave it to her) and I thought I would try to incorporate it into my workouts. Is 3x a week reasonable?

she may want to do one, but she has knee issues so running is a problem for her..

Yes i do the Hard Core Workout, and i might have given it to Meg...  I think 3x a week is a good number, that's what i'll be doing...

I'm impressed by anything called "hard core" in the off season!

John,

So, what can you tell me about the columbia swim? Is the lake very wide? I am used to being in the water from being at the beach my entire life, but I will always wonder what is below. Sometimes that thought freaks me out.

I'm hoping to be able to get a few open water swims in prior to the race. Do you know of any places I may be able to do that?

When does the "off season" begin? Do people transition to different training regimens during the season? If I am only planning on doing one triathlon this year, is my season determined by when I start to do my official training for that race as opposed to the general workouts I have been doing?

Do you think it is better to lift (legs) after a run or swim?

the lake is pretty wide, where you get in the lake is a boat ramp, then you spread out.  The you swim into the sun for about a 1/4 mile, than you make the turn and head to the finish, you don't finish where you start.  the swim is like the letter "J" on it's side.  The water is deep so you won't feel the bottom...

My tri club is hoping to have some open water swims in NJ, as of right now we don't have anything nailed down, but we hope to.  I'll let you know...

there really isn't a "off season" once you get wrapped up in triathlons, you are always doing something.  But if you had to give an answer, i would say Nov-Jan/Feb at least i consider that my "off season".  I guess i would say yes your official "on season" would be when you start your training for you race.   I hope this answer helps.

If you had to lift after one of these workouts i would say swim, since you don't use your legs that much during the swim.

I'd go with John's recommendation but if you're up for a few yucks you could warm up 10' on the tready, lift and THEN swim to loosen up.  My coach has been having me do this the past two weeks and I would pay money to see my swim.  I like to refer to it as the post weight flail.

Thanks for the info on the swim! I have a mental picture of what it will look like now.

I would love to come to NJ for a few open water swims. I forgot you had a tri club in Jersey.

I ask the question about lifting because I lifted my legs the other day after a run. It's the most convenient for me because I'm right there, but I wasn't sure I was getting the best lifting because my legs were tired.

I could try Jessica's idea of lifting my legs before a swim...not sure that would be a pretty sight later in the pool...haha 2/3 of my swim days are also bike days so that may be alot for me.

Would it be better to get up early, go to the gym to lift my legs, and then run at night? i only want to do light lifting.

i would say yes better to lift in the morning, then run at night.... of course the best would be to lift in the morning, swim at night..... but you do what you have to do....     There is a Topic called Strentgh Training they may be able to answer your question than me.... i am not the best guy to ask weight questions, you've seen me, i am not much of a muscle man..

Good Morning all! I hope you don't mind all my questions.

What will my nutrition need to look like for an Olympic? I've only done the one sprint and just drank water the entire time. Will I just need to use gels or do I need to buy the formulated stuff? What about a recovery drink? How does this then play into my workouts?

Any thoughts / recommendations?

This is one of my favorite topics.  I am a huge fan of Hammer Nutrition products.  www.hammernutrition.com

The great thing about Hammer products is they can all be used in conjunction with one another.  No simple sugars are used in their products so you don't get the jolt followed by the crash and burn.  Here's what I use specifically:

I use Heed, which is their version of Gatorade.  This is great for 1-2 hour workouts.  The flavor is eh, but it works really well.  I prefer the orange to the lemon lime.

Hammer gels are great.  Can be taken with Heed but better to use with 3-4 oz of water.  No worries about stomach cramping with these products.  Favorite flavor is raspberry or apple cinnamon.  People in my club seem to like espresso and banana.

Sustained energy is for longer course stuff.  Anything lasting over 2 hours.  It includes some protein to prevent muscle tissue breakdown.  I add gels to the mix to make it taste decent.  That's one power packed water bottle!

Finally, Endurolytes are basically salt tabs to prevent cramping on some of the longer course stuff.  I think in the heat of the summer, they're a good option even at the oly distance.

I also use Race Caps, Mito Caps and the daily vitamin.  But that's not necessary for racing.

There are lots of good options out there.  I just happen to be a Hammer user.  Hope this helps!

Jessica, Thanks for all the information about the Hammer products. I'll take a look at the link. So, during a race do you have to think about taking in several different things....gels, electrolytes, heed, water etc?? Does that get confusing?

I'm sure you've heard me talk about my sister some. She's the reason I got started in triathlons. She started triathlons quite a few years ago and has been very succesful at them. I would go watch her and get so excited. So here I am today. ANYWAY, getting off track...she uses infinit, plus a recovery drink after each race. She likes it because she only has to worry about taking the infinit during the race, in addition to water. Do you know anything about infinit? John, do you still use Infinit?

What do you do as far as a recovery drink after a race?

Anything special you do before a race / long workout?

I like Jessica use to use Hammer products.  I had great success with the gels, salt caps, (e-caps) and the HEED.  But when i need to go longer i need to buy another product called Perpetum, this product didn't sit will with me at all.  I didn't like the taste or anything about it.

I still use Infinit.  I love it.  As you already know you create your own product yourself, you can add more flavor, salt, or protein, etc.   I think it tastes good, and it doesn't taste real bad in the heat.  You can also make it into a gel/paste.  So with this one product I can do all the same things i did with Hammer, and it will be much cheaper.  Also if you create your product and you don't like you can send it back and re-make another one until you create the one you like.   I swear i don't work for the company.

I normally don't use a recovery drink, and i know i should i just don't.. so i can't really help you with that....

For the Oly race you really don't need to worry to much about you nurtition (you do) if you used some gels while on the bike and maybe a gel before the run.  Columbia has gels on the run course, not sure what brand but i would check it out....

Infinit looks interesting ... food for thought.

Hammer has a recovery product too.  Recoverite.  Tastes like a dreamsicle.  I don't use it as often as I should ....

Thanks kleinrider! I used your slogan "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" to get me through a motivational issue while running. It was the perfect thing to keep me going.

HI Everyone,

I'm wondering and this may sound crazy, but do any of you feel hungry after a workout? I've been noticing it mostly after I come home from the pool. I usually swim after I put the kids to bed and come home starving. I don't like to eat late at night, but I have been after a swim. It's weird because I don't always feel that way after a bike/run.

Hope you all had a great weekend.

it doesn't seem that weird, i normally feel hungry after a swim too..  I really don't have an answer why, are you eating before your swim?   Maybe you eat before the runs/bikes???
