Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Leston, excellent job.....great race report - my thoughts and prayers are with our fellow competitor and his family. One can believe he was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing. The show is TOMORROW at 3 central. I read the guide wrong, sorry. Flipper - the shrimp would be worth it... Leston - did you have the chip under your wetsuit? Sighting - mav and flipper should weigh in hear too - I roll to air, then pivot around to grab and quick sight, and then get my face/head back down. I seem to suck water if I try to sight and then breathe. Happy finish line Leston.... sTRIve

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Bryan, the chip was NOT underneath the suit. Suit is too short (or my legs too long) for that. Anyway, next time I'll see if I can get it underneath. I'll try sighting after a breath, and see if that is any better. Extreme Veteran 1338 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! I would try to get the chip under if possible. Let me know if the sighting after breathing helps. I think it will. It's just roll to air, pivot neck forward, eyes just over water - just high enough to see landmark. By the way, DON"T look for buoys unless you have to, try to line up landmarks ahead of time - big things are easier to see than buoys. sTRIve |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! WOOOOHOOOO LESTON!!!!! What a great race. Glad you made it through the swim with such ease. That run was incredible. I knew you could bike but thats a fast time on the run...you've been holding out on us X2 what Bryan said about sighting. The swim will get easier, with time you might find you actually like it (instead of dread it).The good thing is ...its the shortest part of any tri. I have noticed that in my jelly legs off the bike I think I am very slow because of how I feel and when I go back and look at mile to mile splits I am not slow at all( in terms of what I generally run). I just feel that way. Glad you had a good time. Thoughts and prayers to the family of the triathlete today. Is your wife OK? I am sure she was shook after watching that and having you out on the course. Time to start training for that oly..... the adventure continues |

I am off to bed now and will give report tomorrow night as soon as I can! sTRIve on Turtles. Dan ps I got in the wet suit today and did a quick swim and can't believe how bouyant the suit is! Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Dan, you will do great tomorrow, I know it. Just go out easy on the swim, just ease through it. You will have a fun time. For the record, I think the 5k course was actually shorter than 5k. I haven't run sub-7s for a while, so I have my doubts. Either that, or just a fast one with that downhill section. Mav, thanks for the props. I actually found myself today thinking back on the swim and wishing that I could go do it again. Now that I know I can do it. I actually look forward to the next OWS. Maybe I will make an OWS a weekly part of my training for the fun of it. Thanks for concern for my wife - it was definitely hard for her to watch them try unsuccessfully to revive him. She's doing fine. Turtle power! Edited by Leston12 2008-06-22 12:01 AM |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Well, another finishline down for the Turtles! I have broken my Tri cherry! I will set the scene as best as I can, then tell you how I thought I did and then finally the results! Preperation: I can't explain the excitement I have been feeling and how much fun I have had the last few days. Getting my wet suit on Thursday, then on Saturday my daughter and I went shopping to get a "Tri Suit", yankz shoelaces, new tire pump, racebelt, sock, etc. We then went to register and attend the MultiSport 101 explaining the course, rule, regulations, etc. Meet some fun people, took my first swim in my wetsuit - it was just so much fun and a great bonding day with her as well. As you know, just like Leston, I was very confident in my abilities to finish this distance and do well. Day of race: woke-up at 4:50am (I didn't know my alarm would go off that early!). I didn't sleep very well as I kept going over the transition steps in my mind, thinking about the race and felt like a school kid going to the prom or something! My wife and daughter both went with me (as this is a major accomplishment for my wife to get up this early!!!!). My car was packed the night before so I we were on the road by 5:10. I pulled into the park about 6:05 and was suprised to see so many people already there! I went to my racking station and found I was the first one in my row! So I got the very end of the rack (just like I was hoping). I then got my ChampionChip, visited with some of the Lifetime Trainers that I saw and then went back to my car for a little 1/2 hour nap! About 7:00 am I went back to the transition area and just "took in the sights and experience" of the athletes, felt the anticipation in the air and still was excited and confident in my abilities. I spoke with several of the other athletes and talked with many of the people I met the day before. I was amazed at the number of body types, ages and "varied" group of people that do Triathlons. This was very cool. Just before they started the explaination, I heard several people talking about BT! I then went over and introduced myself and there were 5 or 6 people from this site! That too was awesome. OK, not to be too dramatic, but we have to go now for 2 graduation parties. I will give the race details later. Sorry, but this darn life keeps getting in the way! Check back later, Dan |

Apparently Dan thinks he's frickin Paul Harvey or something with the "rest of the story" stuff......so far so good with the exception that the keeper of "the LAW" is thinking that was a lot of purchasing yesterday....he made me feel better by going for a swim but methinks there may have been new items on that course today.....hmmmmm!!!! Sleep the night before....no one does....it is actually the night before the night before that matters....in other words, Friday night for a Sunday tri or Thursday night for a Saturday tri... I will also share that my wife and I got up at 4:30 yesterday morning to drive an hour and a half to watch our daughter do her second sprint. We surprised her and it was really funny walking up the walkway and seeing her face when she realized it was us. She did this one for extra credit for a college course she is taking. She said she saw us coming down the drive and thought "that guy looks like dad"....and that woman....it is dad....we got a big hug and parent of the day I think....I don't know about ya'll but there aren't many days when you really surprise your adult kid and they let you know how pleased they are.....yesterday was one of those days....I have had a smile on my face all weekend... sTRIve |

Hey y'all, I am at an airport internet kiosk in Ottawa awaiting my flight home to Freddy Beach. I have only a minute but wanted to send congrats to all the racers. Will write more later. Two weeks today until my first Sprint Tri. I am already starting to get nervous. Had a CRAPPY run today which of course worries me but I know it is just one run so not to worry. Tried out my YANX today and am still fiddling with tehm to get them comfy. I have always been a bit particular about my shoe lacing and getting them "just right". Crazy busy week ahead but will try to get in at least a couple swims and a couple of rides. Sticka |

I love my yanks, and I have taken a HUGE step to doing my 3-4 mile runs without socks!! How daring I figure I can reduce my transition times if I bike and run without socks. My time is not going to be reduced in the run, so I have to cut it out somewhere. Good luck on your final weeks of training. It always feel good to be home after a long trip. |

Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Damn, I typed about 1/3 of the report and "lost" it!!!! Sorry, here it goes again: 1st: Juanita: congrats on the job and gym membership! I am very glad for you! I am sure our prayers helped! Leston, after you read my race report, I can't express to you how impressed I am with your first Tri's! Your times are incredible! Continue for the morning: Temperature is 58 degrees at 7:00 am, water temperature is about 72. Mostly sunny, very few clouds in the sky, just a beautiful morning. Anticipation and excitement fill the air. It was really a great morning! Swim: The over 40 male sprint group was the LAST wave in the entire race! I really hate the anticipation and wish I could have gone earlier, but made the best of it talking with other racers, my wife and daughter and trying to take my mind off it as much as I could. About 10 minutes before I was to start, I got in the water to get acustomed it. It felt very warm and about 1/3 of the swimmers were not using wetsuits. However, since I wanted bouyancy and have a sleeveless, I was DEFINITELY using the wetsuit! When we were called to the starting line, no one wanted to be in front! It was a standing water start and several of the people were even standing with just their feet in the water. The starting buoy was about 30' into the water. So about 4 or 5 of us went to the front (I figured why not!). I was still more excited and confident than I was nervous and just wanted the go signal! We finally got it and I started and tried to set a comfortable pace - however as my wife tells me, me and one other guy took off way ahead of everyone else until about 1/2 way to the turn around buoy (our swim was 250m straight out, around a double buoy and then 250m straight back). That is when I started to feel nervous for some reason. My breathing got more difficult, the wetsuit seem to tighten around my chest, I started bumping into other swimmers as they passed me and I started to wonder if I could finish the swim! I then accidently swam directly into a surfboard with several swimmers holding on for a rest (this was about 200m into the swim). I grabbed on for about 10 seconds then started swimming again. I had to breast stroke several time, but was getting through it. I made the turn and started back. I would swim about 25m then breast stroke, swim 25m then float on my back (thank God for the buoyance of the wetsuit!), then swim. I was very tired and laboring, but as Leston wrote I started thinking "left, right, repeat, left right, repeat - I am serous about that! I really struggled the last 100m and most of the swimmer were finished (I think). My breathing was very labored. I don't think I have ever had a panic attack, but I think that was something like one. I came out of the water and my wife was asking if I was OK. I heard her, but didn't acknowledge her. It was almost like a dream where I was watching myself without being able to respond. It was really a weird feeling that is hard to explain, but I kept moving. T1: The transition was about 150 yards up a hill. I wanted to run, but couldn't. I was still very labored in my breathing, but taking my wetsuit off as I walked. I got to my bike with no problem (the end spopt on the rack was really, really nice!), took off my suit, but was still a bit disoriented. I tried to put on my socks, but couldn't, so I sat down. They were the footie style of socks (I think I should get higher ones for the next time!) and kept rolling rather than sliding on. I finally got them situated, my shoes on and then out to the start. Bike: No problem mounting and got rolling. Out the park and to the road. About 1/2 mile down the road was the first hill. I had several people passing me on the hill, still breathing a bit hard, but finally "catching my breath." As soon as I got to the top (not a bad hill in this direction, but as I found out, a KILLER coming back!) something kicked-in. My breathing got back to normal and my bike is AWESOME! It was a long steep downhill (I don't have a speed computer, but I guess I would be challenging Bryan's 47 mph - only a guess) and I passed EVERYONE who passed me. I then got in a groove. Had a great pace, shifting often and not getting passed by anyone. Then I ran into some mechanical difficulties. I couldn't shift into 19 or 20th gear when I was on a roll. The gears would grind and not shift. I tried to shift back and it worked. Then I tried again to shift up and my chain came off! I stopped, quickly got it back on and started again. I don't think it took much time (about 30 seconds), but several of the people passed me. I got rolling again and took on a good pace and re-passed them. The route was simple for the sprint, basically 6.5 miles out, 360 degree turn and straight back again. On the way back, we then merged with the Oly racers. Some of these guy were flying! I was passed by several of them, but I don't think one of the sprint racers passed me. The hills on the way back were tuff!!!! I thought I got to the last one and was expecting the park entrance to come up, then a guy next to me says "one more hill!" and I realized I hadn't done the last one! IT WAS A KILLER! About 20 - 25 people were walking their bike up the hill. I was able to power through it in 1st gear without stopping. I was slow, but made it the whole time. Once I got to the top, again, I was flying on the downhill passing many people again. As I was coming to the bike finish there was a chalk line and a lady was yelling to dismount before the line, but I was zoned in and assumed I need to pass the line before dismount. I got off about 15' after the line (not realizing it!). Dismounted and got into transition. T2: Unlike T1, this was quick and smooth. off with the cleats, on with the running shoes with the yankz, I quickly sprayed my arms and neck with suntan lotion (my daughter was yelling at me to not do that!) and out. Run: MY LEGS WERE RUBBER! I wasn't sure I could make the entire 5k. I was jogging out the park and had to walk within 1/4 mile of the start. Breathing was hard, but not like the swim, my legs were just gone. I would walk about 50 yards then start jogging again. I would run about 1/4 mile and then walk, run and walk. There were many people doing the same thing. I would talk a little with some of them as we were moving, then either they or I would start running. I did the run/walk thing the entire race. I figure I walked about 1/2 mile. I was very disappointed in myself, but I kept moving forward. The run was out the park, left down the road about 1/2 mile right turn on a dirt road (gravel was well compacted into the road, it was actually ideal for running!), down just over 1 mile, 360 degree turnaround and then back. How is it possible to be running uphill both ways? I know it is not possible, but it sure seemed that way to me! As I turned into the park I was running with a young (early 33 - age was marked on our calves) guy doing his first tri too. We talked a little and agreed to sprint the last bit. I was able to beat him and I finished pretty strong. My wife, daughter and others were there cheering. I was thinking of all of you as I crossed the line! That is how I felt and remember my first Tri. I did wait for them to post the times (which took about 1 hour from my finish). It was very, very rewarding talking to the other athletes, eating the food, drinking the water and energy drinks provide and taking in the whole atmosphere. Sharing it with my wife and daughter made it even more special. I didn't write down the times and they still aren't posted online yet (should be online by tomorrow), but here are my approximates: Swim: 14.30 (500m) T1: 4.0 Bike: 45.0 (20k) T2: 1.30 Run: 33.0 (5k) Total: 139.something I accomplished my first 2 goals: 1. I did not puke! 2. I did finish I did not accomplish my time goal of 1 hour 28 min. Since you guys have been with me since the start of my training, I must be honest and admit I am very disappointed in myself. I thought I was prepared for the swim and was not even close to being ready for it. I know it was more mental than physical and that even disappoints me more. I am happy I finished, don't get me wrong, but I was expecting better things from my first race. I have a lot of training to do before Chicago on August 24th. I MUST find a way to get to open water swimming. OK, I got to go to bed now. Thanks for being here and listening. sTRIve on Turtles. Dan Edited by MSUDan 2008-06-23 8:34 AM |

Uxbridge | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Loved your race report Dan...it was worth the wait!LOL What are you disappointed with? Freaking out in the swim is a "normal" thing for triathletes. Your times were fine. You should look back and analyze what you can do to improve for your next tri. It might be that you went out a little fast on the swim thats why you felt quickly fatigued and got a little freaked out. If you want to find places to practice OWS check out your state thread. I have been doing OWS with a few people from BT...they know some pretty great places to swim. I actually havent gone swimming in a pool in over a month! It is such a great feeling crossing that line. Glad you enjoyed the experience. YOU ARE NOW A TRIATHLETE!!!!! |

Veteran 113 Salt Lake City area | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Dan you have nothing to be disappointed about. You did great! You should feel a great sense of accomplishment. And like mav already noted, YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE! How many people can say that? Thanks for the way you described the atmosphere of the race. I remember feeling excited, nervous, etc. yet still really enjoying just being there and sharing the experience with so many people. It is truly unique to Tri's I think. I mean I've done races before, but there seems to be more of a bond because of the difficulty, maybe. And lots of people doing it just for the fun of the challenge. Saturday I remember wishing that I could do the swim over again, because I knew that I could do better. Maybe you felt like that. Just chalk it up to experience, and know that next time you will be better prepared because of it. My first couple of OWS I felt rather dizzy after getting out of the water and onto terra firma. Anyone else experience this? Didn't have that problem on Saturday, maybe it is something that your body learns to adjust to, like the Bike-to-Run brick...? Update on the fellow triathlete who was retrieved from the water on Saturday. The paper said that they took him to the local hospital and then flew him to another facility closer to Salt Lake City. So he evidently came out of it, but they gave no details about what kind of shape he is in. I hope he comes out of it ok. sTRIving, Leston |

I watched that segment of the program on Food Network. Whoa, sounds like a great place - it sure made me hungry! Looked MUCH better than the French Toast diner in Baltimore that puts Cap'n Crunch cereal in the batter...Hmm...!? They had a ton of comments from the patrons at Tip Top, and I'm not sure which is you... Veteran 281 | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! OK Turtles, Thanks for all the kind words and support. I am now done being disappointed and moved into the "I will not let that happen to me again" stage! This morning I swam 1,600m non-stop (in the pool!). I was not going to let myself stop until I finished 1 mile (the most I have ever swam before is 1,250m non-stop). I also will not touch the floor during any turns (I would do this when I got tired) and will not grab the top ledge while making any turns (again, giving me a slightly longer breath during a turn). I hope these slight changes will help in my OWS, but I UNDERSTAND NOTHING PREPARES YOU LIKE DOING AN OWS! It is just difficult for me to find and do these on a regular basis, so I figure pool swimming is better than waiting for the weekend! I have also signed-up for another local Tri on July 12th. It is an 800m OWS; 11 Mile bike; 3 Mile run. It is very close to my house (about 15 minutes away). I really wanted to do one more before Chicago (Aug 24th). If I do well, I might find one more (Ok, I guess I got the damn bug!) before Chicago! We are going to our place in Northern Michigan (beautiful little town called Harbor Springs, MI) for the 4th of July. I will bring my bike and wetsuit to be able to do training while I am gone (the hard part will be not drinking too much while I up there!!!!) ps My thighs are still KILLING ME! (I got a massage last night that helped, but they are still very, very sore!). Take care Turtles! Dan |

Extreme Veteran 553 New Brunswick, Canada | Subject: RE: left.right.repeat group -closed - Full of a bunch of winners...YEAH! Received my borrowed wetsuit this afternoon so went to the lake this evening to give it a try. Man, there is actually a 4th event in Triathlon - getting INTO the wetsuit. I was exhausted by the time I finally zipped up. Lake was chilly but I took my time and got acclimatised. It took a long while before I felt like I could get my face down into the water and start swimming. I practised a bit f crawl and a bit of breastroke. Tried to do some sighting off landmarks. Going in one direction it was hard because nothing but trees but heading in the other direction there was a house that served as a great reference point. My plan is to get to the lake again this week and once next week. Should be very comfortable by then although it sure looks like a LONG distance that I'm going to have to swim! My daughter Stephanie came and took some pics so I'll try to add them tomorrow. Also some good news on the home front. Mrs FBP (or is it Mrs Sticka?) received word today that she will be sponsored throug a government program to do her Masters in Adult Education this fall on a F/T basis. Also, Sticka Junior (Chris) got offered a summer job today - starts next week. Like Dan, we are off to the family cottage this weekend for Canada Day (July 1st). Kids are excited because there is a 3-day series of rock concerts that they have bought passes for. I hope to get in a ride or two plus a couple of OWS.

Disappointment in time/outcome/anything....two words....SHUT UP....I want each of you to think of that day not all that long ago, when something...whatever it was...happened and you thought "hmmm I wonder if....no not me....I can't....people will laugh....my family will think I am nuts....I couldn't in a million years....well one day I drove 15 miles....there is no way I can swim that far....well I have always liked the water....maybe, maybe maybe...I think I will try if my family doesn't laugh....and then they didn't laugh....and then you were committed. You see, someone got me started in this - his name was Jim and he was a stranger when he did it but today we get to race together from time to time. More than likely someone got you started too. In other words, no one doubted you, don't doubt yourself. You owe yourself more than that. And if you don't think you deserve it, I know that person who got you started deserves better, remember, they changed your life. By the way, now it is your turn, if you haven't yet, to find that next person who needs to do this. There was another comment about "the bond" - it's sort of like "the law" - we support one another. Even in competition, we support. I find it very interesting that competitors willingly give up their race to help someone with a flat. That podium finishers return to the finish chute to cheer on others. That the loudest cheers at most events are for the final finishers, not the first ones. And unlike any other sport I have done, even running races, people cheer for each other and root each other on. It is amazing. It is also like, we all just know what the other has gone through once you join the family. Our family is almost complete...it won't be long Sticka...you are ready....we will be with you every step of the way....check that....we will be behind you every step of the way you fleet footed FBP.... I also have to say, I am humbled that you all left-right-repeat.....that cracks me up. It really speaks to me...when the going gets tough...it's just, left right repeat. As far as walking in a tri....you knew this was coming....in an Ironman last year a pro had problems on the bike...he blew out his legs....could NOT run....so he walked (most pros drop out if they run into problems for reasons of ego, sponsors, bad finish times, whatever) but this guy walked...NBC kept showing him on TV...walking amongst the commoners (age groupers) - They asked him why he was walking and not quitting...his answer was something like, I promised myself years ago I would NOT quit. I owed it to all the other people out here. I respect them too much just to pull out. I have thought many times that was just cool. I gained a lot of respect for that pro that day. I need to go get his name. He walked 26.2 miles. By the way, he is still an Ironman. And even if you walk, you are a TRIATHLETE. And if you don't believe me, I have a question for you, "if you coast at any time on the bike, are you less of a triathlete...I mean really, you didn't pedal the whole way." OK, hang on a second, I am going to put away my soap box. You guys all rock, sTRIve |
