Powertap will make you faster than both of those

Can you give us (mainly me) a quick word on why a powertap would be better and the benifits of one and any other special info that would make me a smarter biker?

Ahh yes, I didn't really think about that.  Speaking of which - do you have to have your wheel redone when you add the PT?  Unless of course you buy a wheel with it built in.

A powertap will allow you train better and race smarter.  A watt is a watt, a mph can vary day to day due to course and weather conditions. When you are pushing 280W you could be going 30mph or you could be going 10mph (see my last weekend's ride in the logs).

Basically the powertap removes all conditions out of your control so you have a steady baseline to train/race on.  For racing, especially longer distances, it's a fool proof way of producing your absolute best bike split for that race on that day. If from your trianing you know you can hold 280W for 1hr then during your race you do that (or slightly above since it's race day) you will have done your best.

Now say the course was mostly tail wind with no powertap, you had a  PR bike split but your wattage was actually low, well you should have gone faster.  On the other side if you have a head wind your instincts will want to power through it so your wattage will probably be much higher than you're capable of holding and your legs are now shot for the run...

For my 70.3 in a month I plan on holding 260-280W, what mph that produces is up to mother nature and the course

I had my PT put on my wheel, I think it was ~50-100 at TriOnTheRun and they just need a couple days with the wheel to re-spoke it. I have a friend that used wheelbuilder.com and got the whole wheel but he also spent 2.5X what I did. I got mine new off of ebay, you just have to know how many spokes the wheel you're putting it on has since there are different PT versions for different spoke counts.

Speaking of Kelli (I think she's back ~18th or so?), I'm not sure if anyone else is a fan of the Biggest Loser but you might have seen this...

http://www.everymantri.com/everyman_triathlon/2009/03/a-dq-for-biggest-liar-is-not-heroic.html

I can't believe the race director allowed that to happen. Could you imagine running the last couple miles of a marathon and watching some Ahole get in a van and drive to the finish line??????

Yeah I saw that. I would lean more toward the execs for pushing the "assisted" finish thing to get the shot at the thought of him DNFing and its a shame he cheated himself. Even if he DNF he should have been proud to do 17+ miles @280 lbs. Too bad he owned it like he really did it too. But it goes back to there is no reality in reality TV.

I had a dream last night that I was racing an IM and the entire bike course was the parking garage at IMMoo.  So I had to keep cycling up a corkscrew and down the corkscrew over and over and over again for 112 miles.

Perhaps this is my subconscious telling me I need to improve my bike handling skills?

Or that you need to work on climbs with a 3600 degree right hand turn...

I have had the dreams of swimming twice in the last month. It is so different that the dream where I am running. Usually my dreams when I am runing I am slower than cold molassas. My swims have been good and I was doing well. Hopefully that will stay true when I start next week.

I like my swimming dreams too.  Though they usually go terribly wrong in transition and I end up cycling without shoes, a helmet, or lately, pants.

Cycling without pants? ohh that's gonna leave a mark!  I was running a little late to work this morning...my oldest son got his driver's license this morning... clear the sidewalks of Houston!!!

Topic of dreams...for me I haven't had any Tri related, although I might enjoy that.  I have had a recurring dream that my wife keeps trying to give our newest (from Nov.) Miniature Dachsund puppy away... I wake up pissed off!  What's up with that?

Okay, I am two-for-two on the AM sessions... I must have a feeva, and the only cure is more COW Bell... oh, I mean more AM training!  I am planning an AM run for tomorrow... I hope my body lets me get up like it did the past two days.

Two of our comrades are out on Vacation.  Is it bad to be slightly jealous of them?  I need / want to take a vacation too (very sad face!!!)... lol!

Believe it or not, in the dreams where I'm cycling without pants it's not the chaffage I'm typically worried about , it's the sunburn.  Dude, who knows where my subconscious is on those nights?

I'm jealous of the vacations too.  Espeically Kelli.  I want to be in australlia with the kangaroos and surfer boys.

Weekend WO for me - I am planning a 3500m swim workout (followed by an easy hr bike - I think) for Saturday and a 150 minute ride on Sunday (approx 45 miles).

Hey now... you're lucky I like you otherwise you would be in for a verbal lashing.

For me, I'm doing a 5 mile run over the bridge in my hometown tomorrow, so it will be kind of luch a long excruciating hill... fun times.  Then I have a relay for life I'm participating in tomorrow night.

Bike planned on Sunday.

Nothing too thrilling.  We are going boating tomorrow though, which usually involves copious amounts of something fruity and umbrella garnished.

I have some 16oz curls planned for tonight.  i had a HUGE day today so I'm going to get to bed at a decent time tonight.  Sunday will be a 20 minute Time Trial on the trainer.  Not sure if it will be a big chain ring affair but its quite possible!

I just wanted to share the fact that I am totally stoked with my swim workout this morning.  3200m and it felt REALLY good.  The longest swim in a pool for me.  I am seeing my effort level come down and my 100m splits fall as well.  It is a cooool feeling to see improvements.  I will be working equally as hard on the bike and see if the total package come together for my first tri of the season!

My mission for March is in the pool at least twice a week... hearing about fun swim workouts helps with that motivation.   I already said it in your blog, but nice job on the swim!

I'm a facebook idiot, but if you want to add me send me a pm and I'll send you my last name, since it would take a miracle for me to figure out how to add you myself.
