Veteran 163 | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Ok. Just completed my half marathon on saturday. And if was good, no injuries, just my feet & achilles (sp?) are tight still. So I did a 3 mile recovery run today (I did nothing yeserday). The run was slow (not painful), I wasn't looking for pacing just completing my run. Is it a good ideas to start running so soon? Here is my race report: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=243334&posts=1&start=1 |

Member 60 Athens, GA | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Sterling- Congrats on the race. Sound like it went really well. As for the shoelace thing, mine always seem to come undone, so I invested (the whopping $8 bucks or so) in Yankz and another pair of elastic shoe laces I got off my climbing shoes. I really like it and feel that they make my feet happier in my shoes. Just some food for thought. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED update on the foot --- looks like it may be a case of plantar facitis (sp?). Looks like I'm going to have to shelve running for a bit (or weeks), forget the 1/2 mary, and concentrate on swim & bike while I ice the foot, and give it time to get better. This is killing me. I've worked so freakin' hard to get ready for the 1/2 mary, and was very fired up for it. Now its not looking likely. . I'm just hoping I can do a few races this year. This just stinks beyond belief...... Edited by Mike_D 2011-02-28 8:33 PM |

Extreme Veteran 422 Somewhere, British Columbia | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Mike, I know exactly where you are right now. Don;t be disappointed. All the work you've done so far is not waisted and is already a good base for the future. You will soon find a new race, a new goal to llok at and will forget about that. You know, my coach just told me today to forget about my half mary for next sunday because of my injury. This will be the second DNS in a row! But, the season is just kickin' Take some days off training, relax, enjoy the time and come back stronger ! Keep the faith ! |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Awesome job Sterling. Mike, I know this sucks right now, but as an ATHLETE, injuries happen. It sucks to have to bow out of a race you have been planning for, believe me, I know, but life and training go on. Use this time to really get good on swim and bike. Also, looking into aqua-jogging until you can get back on your feet. People swear by it. Keep your head up. |

Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Think things are just about back to normal for me.... Just finished 30 minutes on the treadmill here in Monterrey, Mexico. Travel back home tomorrow and that's it after three weeks of being on the road way too much!!! Last week I finished the 6 week Time Crunched Triathlete program. I can say with confidence that I'm a big believer that it will help AND it's easy to work in to one's schedule. Last workout on Saturday called for 800 yards in the pool, 30 minutes on the bike and 10 minutes running. Program is designed to race on Sunday. I was skeptical about doing that much the day prior, but went ahead and did it. Now Sunday my cold kicked my aXX and I could not workout. However, my muscles felt great / was definitely in fine shape from a conditioning stand point. I'll be taking it easy for a couple of weeks and working mainly on steady, aerobic zone training. Think it wise after six hard weeks to rest a bit. Big decision for me now is in regards to swimming. There's a masters group that meets 3 x per week at 5:30 am. It's 10 minutes from me and on my way to work, so I don't have any excuses. Trying to decide if that's the way to go OR if I'm better off registering for a two day TI workshop in Chicago. With all the time in the water over the past six weeks, I am confident that I'll get value out of either experience. Welcome you guys thoughts on pros and cons. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Curt & Itzia -- fantastic work! Whats next for you, curt as far as workout plans? Itzia - nice job on coming out on top! Josh - thanks for the perspective. This is supposed to be fun, and right now it isn't so much. While I feel 95% better than I did last week, and REALLY want to go try running asap, I'm taking the foot thing slow. I'm actually going back to Marathon sports w/ the shoes I bought there in December to see if they are the right show for me. Can't hurt to check (althought they did a decent stride/foot check when I bought them). Did get in a good swim today, and definitely need some work on that front. The bike trainier is getting far more use now, too. |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi everyone, Sorry I've been out of the loop for a bit. Just finished reading the last 2 pages of this thread. Mike- Sorry about your injury and having to miss the HM. x2 on what Josh said. Croix- I'd go with the masters classes. I did them in the summer & fall and they really pushed me a lot harder than I push myself & kept me consistant with my swim training. I can't wait to start them again in the spring. Utah- Great race! Itzia- Congrats on winning your challenge. Dan- Nice job on the swim! Alex- Nice bike! Good news for me. Down to 155 lbs- a total loss of 10lbs since Jan 1. Tried out the new bike when I felt 100% healthy and WOW! What a difference! Going to try in out at Red Rock this Saturday on some big climbs. |

Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED So, after stewing for a few days about the foot thing, I'm going to make this as positive as I can. The HM is out, and I'm not going to worry about running for at least a couple weeks or longer. I'm also going to go find a good sports doc if this is stil painful early next week. My hope is that the foot comes back to normal in the next couple weeks (w/ or w/o a doc intervening) and I can slowly build back up to that. I have a few races I want to do this year and I'm not going to blow the season just trying to do the HM on an injured foot. |

I am not so sure I would have bounced back so quickly! Thanks, Ail. I figure there's no point in trying to fix something I can't change, so I'll just be terrible at 2 sports for now instead of 3 . My mission for the next few weeks is to get the bike humming and see if I can find a way to turn running frustration into swimming balance Mike |

I am going to do this 10k tomorrow, with the goal of finishing it, no time limits in my head or such. Then taking a swim clinic next week. Also just got cycling shoes, so I am making these small incremental changes, that way maybe I will not be lost in my age group this summer! HAHA |

Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED WOO HOO!!!! Swam 1000 yards, non-stop in 29:43 this afternoon!!!!!! Previous best time was around 37 minutes if I remember correctly. 100 splits were: 2:33, 3:12, 3:01, 3:09, 3:04, 2:54, 3:02, 3:00, 2:56, 2:47 For all you fish, it's nothing special. For a rock like me, it's pretty exciting. The swim was pretty easy. Second 100 felt slow, so I picked it up and tried to stay relaxed. Just kind of plodded along feeling fine. Pushed a little in the last 100, but still had plenty of gas. Think if I work at it for another month and push a bit harder can likely take it down to around 25 minutes. Thinking that the masters swim program may be the way I go / the next challenge for me. ETA -- Checked previous best and it was 38:48 on Decembr 14th. 9 minutes off my time in 3 months! Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: BB's Really Beginner Mentor Group - CLOSED Mike you're spot on about it being about each of our individual quest. I really am pleased / tickled. Last year during the tri I did with the OWS I came seriously close to giving up / had to hang on to surf boards about 10 times. Today was great as I actually SWAM versus struggling -- even felt the speed a couple of times. By summer I'd like to get down to 2 min / 100 yards. Would be awesome to come out of the water relaxed and ready for the bike. Appreciate very much the support / encouragement. |
