jarvy01 - 2011-01-26 2:42 PM I have a little space in the freezer, too.  My husband had a hip replacement this past Sept., so he needed lots of ice packs (he's only 40, btw ).

Perhaps it's only because I've only started putting in some decent time on the bike, but I'm noticing that it's downright painful to sit on that bike for a long time.  Think that means I need a different saddle?  Or will my rear adjust to it?

Could be either honestly.  I personally would hold out and see if it gets better before dropping $100+ for a good saddle.  I'm cheap like that though.

Some bike shops will give you a loaner to see if it helps (with the hope that you'll buy one)
It could be a fit problem as well.
Or just time in the saddle

What a crazy, but very successful last 1 1/2 weeks at work.  Fortunately, I love my job.

I am taking it a little easy this week, as I want to treat it as my "rest" week.  I don't want to call it an "off" week.  I am finally a BRONZE member, and have finally imported a training plan.  I chose "Olympic, 16 week bike focused"  The sprint minutes were just too short.  I also chose bike focused because although I will do a few sprints this year, Mountain Biking Racing is still my main focus, and I want to do really well in that.

It's odd though, that I am marking my "A" race this year a Sprint Tri.  Reason is, it's held in my hometown (our town has never done this before), and I don't want to embarass myself in front of the many people I know. That's not until August 28th, so I still have plenty of time to focus on MTB Racing.

Still leaning towards the Specialized Roubaix now.  I hope to get it next week, barring any last minute decision changes. Tired of riding the mountain bike on the trainer.

I have a couple of ice packs in the freezer. I use to be very injury prone when i was playing beach vollyball so i couldnt live without my ice packs. Now, its just reassuring to know they are there when needed.

I just put a deposit on the Specialised Ruby Apex Elite (WSD)! I was stunned at how smooth the Specialised bikes feel yet fast at the same time. I cant wait till i can pay it off and go for a nice long ride =)

That's awesome! You'll have to post up a pic when you get your new bike.

I think that we are in the middle of an ice storm right now.  It could just be snowing out - but its pretty nasty looking and sounding.  Before I go to bed tonight, I have to make myself a set of screw shoes for tomorrow's run.  This has been a heck of a winter - but at least I like running in the cold and snow.

I have a question about training programs. Since my tri season has been 'interrupted' i am thinking that i will start a maintenance program now (not being on a program at the moment is contributing to my lack of motivation). The program im looking at is 20wks long, this means it finishes in mid-June. So, with the tri season then not starting for a further few months what do i do to keep the fitness up at the end. For instance, should i repeat the final 4wks of the maintenance program over and over until its time to do a sprint program?

(and yes i'll post a piccie of the bike when i finally pay it all off, so excited!)

Yeh, check at a bike shop to see if another seat fits better, check bike fit, or try weaing 2 pairs of shorts.

I found I can't wear bike shorts cuz there is too much padding, but I can wear two pair of tri shorts.  The parts still go numb, but numb is a far better option than pain.  Just got to be patient and try things out.

I would keep doing a maintenance program to keep your fitness level up.

You want the program to end right when your race is because it takes into account build and peak phases. So until that starts, just get more and more comfortable in all your training.  If you are getting bored, do some cross training to spice it up, or add speed, interval, tempo or hill training.  Any or all of this will make you more prepared.  Make sure to have an OK recovery before your program starts so you can go all out with it.

Good luck

If you need to "repeat" to make the program long enough, I would repeat the first 4 weeks over (and over) rather than the last 4 because as Carrie said most plans take into account a peak and taper at the end (which you don't want to repeat) whereas doing additional base at the beginning is only going to make you stronger.

We have about 10 inches of new snow this morning.  Roads are totally un-runnable (again).  Back on the treadmill for me tonight.

carrie639 - 2011-01-26 12:49 PM These probably would've been a good idea after my 1/2 mary in November.

Tip for others:  DO NOT take a jacuzzi after a long race!!!  Felt great until all the cramping set in.  Then of course afterward I read you should ice or take and ice/cold bath after a race like that.

Live and learn right . . .

ice immediately after is good as it reduces swelling, but the majority of the pain is caused by metabolic waste, heat if typically viewed as a better way to increase blood flow.  Ideally, you would walk for about 10-20 minutes after, then take an ice bath, then get an easy massage, lightly stretch, then take a hot shower.  of course you would also have had a recovery shake and then be served a high potein and good carb dinner.  in reality, you have to pull yourself together as fast as possible to play with your kids: I suggest 2 beers and 4 advil.

these days I just go stand outside for 20 miutes

seriously, get the reusable ice packs and keep them handy.  Ice baths are the most effective for reducing swelling, in college we had an ice jacuzzi in the training room (holy shrinkage batman).  You can also buy a cuff that circulates cold water, those are really good too.

not odd at all - a sprint is a 100% effort.  no pacing, just balls to the wall, is a marathon harder than a hard 5K?  I dont know, its longer but man does a 5K hurt.

check out the winding trails series, a low key tuesday night tri in Farmington, 1/4 m swim, 5 mi MTB, 3 mi trail run - little bit of a haul for you but its basically a weekly off road sprint. with a short swim, low key and tons of fun.

Warm enough to jump in the pool this morning.  After a few months out of the water I thought I'd be much slower.  Pleasantly surprised.

I am so jealous.  The pools I use are indoor and heated to 85 degrees because of old lady water aerobics.

I would love to be abel to swim outside.

Double edged sword.  If it's under 46 degrees the city "suggests" you close the pool.  I'm having a hard time getting the swim volume in I need to right now.  BUT the old lady aerobic area is separate from the lap area so that's bueno.

Yes, except for the fact that I owned the house in CT and you rented the fancy warehouse apartment in Tampa.

Now, if you had owned a house in FL, it would have been a different situation.
