tri808 - 2011-02-04 12:43 PM Good to hear your run was "injury" pain free.

But yeah...stay conservative.  It's so tempting to start back up too quickly when coming off injury.  The goal is to improve over the long haul...so be patient and enjoy the small gains.

Definitely good advice.  I have been on the side of coming back too hard too soon and right back on the IR list, only that time for longer than the first time.

Speaking of injuries, here is an excerpt from my log today:
"This was an unscheduled easy workout. My left shoulder has been numb for a week. The numbness seems to follow the mid-line of the deltiod to the rear deltoid. There is no apparent loss of strength and it does not hurt most of the time. I have had a few bouts where I have had very brief sharp pains, primarily at the mid-line, but nothing that last more than a few seconds. Nothing that has bothered me on a regular basis."

What kind of thoughts does everyone have?  I am not sure of the exact time of onset but it might have occurred last week on Friday, at least that's when I noticed it.  I could have done it shoveling snow or swimming but I really have no idea.  I don't think my swim have increased to much too soon but what's the opinion from others?

Go to doctor that's a nerve problem. I'd get it checked sooner than later.

I just signed up for the Illini Half Marathon on April 30th.  This will be the start of my race season.  I am also signed up for a sprint triathlon in Galena.
I am looking forward to both.  Let the hardcore training begin

I got my 9 mile in late today but done nonetheless.  The snow wasn't a huge issue for the most pat but there were a couple of spots where it was deep enough to make have to slow WAY down.  There were some ice slicks that had me sliding around too.  Over all it was a good run for only having been able to get in 2 runs this week.

I am looking forward to next week's training.  The HS swim season will be over tomorrow after sectionals and I won't have a lot going on with my girls until the track season starts.

BTW, my daughter PR'd her 500 free again...5:57:13.  Almost 3 seconds faster than her last record.  She has one more chance to go one better this season, tomorrow.  She was seeded 10th for both of her individual events at the prelims last night and jumped up to 9th in both of them.  She also PR'd her 200 with a time of 2:13.19.  The state cut for the 200 is 1:55.63 and the cut for the 500 is 5:11.99.  She is obviously not going to make those cuts as nearly all the kids swimming don't.  The state cuts are completely ridiculous in my opinion.  The way it works here, only 5-6 girls will even make the state cut out of 12 events.  The rest of the finals winners will get a state bid based on winning their individual event.  Many of these girls won't even be close to the state cut time.   I think its pretty weird the way it works.

Edit:  One girl out of 26 made the state cut in the 500.  One other girl is 4 seconds from the cut then if falls off to 20+ seconds from the cut.

Dirk, I need to know if you've done anything like this!  The guy is only secure when he stops (and clips in with carabiner)... and that ladder at the top is tiny!

Not nearly that high.  The tallest tower I have climbed is 425 feet.  We used to maintain our companies communication antennas years ago but we haven't done that for about 10 years or so.  Most of the time we changed light bulbs but we have also replaced microwave dishes and other whip type antennas.

Our climbing rules on steel are the same, "safety off" when you stop moving or while working.

So I signed up for my first tri this morning! I am planning on doing the Olympic distance, the course it flat and should be fun. I can't wait!
I plan on getting a run in today or tomorrow, I think I am finally over my cold. My half is 16 weeks away and I am way excited, hopefully the groundhog is correct and we will have nice weather coming soon.

Had a great ride/run brick today.  It was the first brick training workout I've done since about April of last year.  Actually felt really good...especially since it was after the longest ride I've done since last summer.  Ended up being about 60 mile ride and 3 mile run.

5k tomorrow morn.
no high hopes as I am not rightly trained. I have never ran this course either. should be a fun race. I think a 23::: is doable, maybe 22::: if I feel well. I doubt Ill go under that but lets hope for the best!
I guess when the race is on, the bets are off.

clothes are on the chair beside my bed, honey is on the kitchen counter. (I take a spoon of honey before each race :P) I hope I don't over sleep!

Good luck on the race!  I like the perspective that I think J used to put a 5k into perspective during the last mentor group, "pain management."  5k's are fun to run when they're over but while running them they hurt.  I am considering running a 5k next Saturday but I haven't decided.  Really it would be stupid not to.  The race cost $5 and thats not going to happen very often.  Maybe I'll scale back my 9 mile run to allow for the 5k?

I have another brick scheduled for today.  It seems that's the way things are working out for me lately.  My reason for doing yet another brick is the road conditions.  After another 6 inches of snow yesterday the roads are in horrible shape and I am hoping they will be cleared by this afternoon when I get home from church and have eaten a little.  I am getting used to these bricks and they don't seem to bother me much.  Maybe that will be to my benefit later on in the season.

Speaking of bricks, what are some of the benefits I should look for out of these workouts?  I have obviously done many of them this winter but I had only done 2-3 very short ones last year.  (Maybe a 10 mile ride with a 1 or 2 mile run following.)  Since I am focussing on the olympic distance again this year, what kind of distances should a typical brick be?

I am going freestyle, I am training for a half marathon that is a week before the tri. I will just tri and keep a good balance with all three sports. Right now I am swimming alot to get my form down. Hopefully it will all go well.

I have be wondering the same thing, I always do brick exercises. That way I am not away from my family all the time. My bricks have been 1500m swim followed by 4 to 6 mile run. Saturday will be my long runs 10 to 18 miles while training for the half marathon. When spring hits I will be riding with a group on Wed so my routine will switch up once its warm.

My biggest question is how much weight training should I do now that the season is getting closer. I have a hard time running after doing leg exercises, last year while training for the Marathon I did strength training 3 days a week.  I am only doing it once a week now, is that enough? I also do very light weight with lots of reps, if I lift heavy I gain weight fast and I don't want more weight going into the races. Well that alot of questions?

5k is in the books. short RR here
not the best race, but not that bad either.
short RR here

weather was alright. sunny but cold. quite cold.
course was hilly and longer than 5k. I thought so and it was confirmed by friends who won their AG and had a good race but whose times were over a minute slower than usual. (sub 18min guys)
oh well, shouldn't be making excuses.

off we went. first km in around 4:45 I think. hanging in behind the FOP but then my shoelace untied and with my hands cold as they were I couldn't tie it back! frustrating on such a short race as this. off I went again but I made the biggest mistake. I grabbed water. I almost never do in 5ks but I did and it was freezing COLD. hot body+ cold water..not good.
after that I never could grab a decent rhythm  and started lagging.  I kinda lost my motivation and willingness to suffer after that. I didn't start my watch at the start so I didn't know my splits. I knew I was running under 5min km though.

near the finish I let a chick 'chick' me because she seemed to be trying so hard to. talked to her for a while, nice chick. :P

fun race all in all. not too bad.

ETA: ha! time was 24:15. I think. no chip time so I haven't checked.

+1 on no strength training.  I haven't done any weight training for several years.  I have allowed the loss of muscle mass to occur so I could get my weight down a little more.  If I can get down to 155 I would consider throwing some weights back into the mix but right now I just want to get faster.

Same here.  I still carry some muscular bulk from my weight lifting days I'm trying to lose...so I haven't done any weight training in about 2 years.

Mel-  How has that program been working for you, I did great the first several weeks but then started hitting roadblocks and had to do several of the same workouts to get them as Rx?

I actually weight train 3x a week but I need to for the PTT tests, I think it is more of why you are doing the training in the first place, if you are not in the best of shape some weights would help add muscle mass and help with fat loss with a higher resting metabolism but you don't need to look like the hulk look into death by body weight.

My big goal this week is to get my workouts in before the weekend since we are going out of town.
