Wow, that sounds like a swimming nightmare. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger!

Well decided to skip bike yesterday due to cold, windy rainy day and go today...snowed last night, still cold(43F) and windy but no rain or snow. Tough ride to say the least. something went on my gear shifters at the 8 mile mark out of 20. could only change the big/small. Bucking the wind all the way back...

Hopefully this is the last of Shellback group bad saturday stories!

I want to move to San Diego with the weather I get and then I read your posts and am torn between feeling like a wuss and feeling blessed for my weather. It sounds like your cables are stretched out and a tuneup will fix you up.

I am all for moving to San Diego, better yet, Hawaii! I used to live in Penticton. I should have stayed here then I would not have to travel to get to an Ironman and the weather is much nicer!

Thanks for the tip on the bike, will take in later this week for tune up!

everylong - Thanks for sharing your race experience with us.  This type of information really helps me as I plan for my first tri.  The water is my most difficult and right now I do several of the things that you mentioned, relax, treadwater, adjust my goggles, swim side stroke for awhile to relax and get my heart rate down.  Just knowing someone with experience is able to swim well while they have to make several adjustments during their swim is encouraging to me.

Well I wouldn't call it swimming well, LOL. I consider my swim to be pretty strong so this was a major slap of reality that open water is different and that I need to pay it more attention. That said whatever tricks you need to finish you use. The first mile swim I ever did I was 11 years old in Boy Scouts. I was the youngest to finish by 3 years. The other older kids in my troupe said I would never finish. When I did you can imagine my smugness. I did back, free, breast and side that day. I wasn't quitting.

tashia153 - 2011-06-04 4:01 PM

Oh and as for shark boy - I can't believe they allow that.  It seems like it would be a hazard to the other swimmers.  I mean couldn't the guy just get a weird swim cap and make his statement that way.  If you can't wear fins (on your feet) why would they let you wear a fin on your back?

I'm torn on Shark-boy. On one hand it is a USTA sanctioned event and I'm sure by having a device on even one that wasn't really helpful to the swim he was ineligible for any awards. So to each his own and if he's out there just having fun oh well. Now when he slammed through the entire front grouping at the start I begin to question does this guy think he's really a shark or something? Was he doing some type of action role playing at the expense of others? That's where I think they should  have yanked him from the water.

tashia153 - 2011-06-04 4:01 PM

Going crazy at the hospital.  If I'm not at therapy with mom then she is sleeping and I am on the computer.  But my mom has been great.  They are having to keep her back from walking too much and this 24 hours after her surgery.  I'm trying not to get too hopeful, but I may get to take her to the cabin on Monday which means YES the lake for OWS and gently rolling hills for biking and running.  I let my son drive my new car if he will spot me in the water and so far it is working fine.  Plus someone needs to be with my mom when I am off exercising.  As you can see I feel very comfortable offering bribes.  Later this week I'll add in food or cash but for now I'm keeping that in reserve. My sister hasn't shown up at the hospital yet and she lives in town.  Did I mention we are a bit disfunctional?

Hanging at the hospital is tiring. It's like the air has been recycled for so long it's more like sleeping gas. It's great that you hang in there for her.

Enjoy the weekend.

Linda

Dad relieved me at the hospital and I did my brick.  Ok, this was ideal conditions, flat, 73 degrees and shady.  I biked 12 miles in 44:05 which is good for me....practiced eatting a granola bar and drinking on the bike (without stopping-I am not coordinated hence the need to actually practice this).  I think this really helped out my run.  My son met me in the parking lot to give me someone to run with/against so I could try to improve my time.  Guess what, we flew and I ran 3.6 miles in 29:44 which is sub 9 minute miles.  An he's 19 and he had to let me go at the end because I kept pushing it and pushing it.  Even though this is my build week 1 I have probably been in more of a taper mode with the workouts squeezed in between hospital time.

So, feel like I am ready on the bike and run, just need to conquer the OWS....hmmm, maybe a shark fin would help.  Everlong do you happen to know where I can get one?

If I had gone over 40 minutes I would have been really sad. Congrats on the 1:08 at Escape the Cape. Your T1 was smoking. Did you wear a wetsuit?

I doubt the fin will be legal but www.asshat.com has them stocked.

Great job on your run that's a nice pace.

I had my first OWS of the season yesterday.  It was also my first time using a wetsuit.  Any of you swim with a wetsuit?

It took me a few minutes to get used to the extra weight I felt in my arms.  Once I got the hang of it, though, I was moving at a pretty good pace.  It's amazing how well the suit keeps you on top of the water.  In fact, my wife (a former Div. 1 swimmer in college who regularly smokes me in the pool) couldn't keep up with me.  I like!

That's awesome. Yeah all my OWS swimming I have a wetsuit on. You are definitely faster with it on. Congrats on beating your wife

Had a great swim this morning. Actually felt like I could finish my swim in a decent time.

Will be heading out this weekend for a scouting/family trip to where I am doing my first Tri in July. Will try first OWS of the year with no wetsuit. Brrr, could be chilly.

Umm, first I would have to have a wetsuit...

Probably rent one the week before my first tri. Probably buy one in the fall for next year...

What an awesome pace for the run, you are definitely going to smoke me on the run at Mankato.  I'm still running at a 12 minute mile but today with my brick I was able to run an 11 minute mile but was running at a high Z3.

I started using Jog Tracker on my runs (since I decided I don't want to buy a GPS HRM right now) and it works pretty well.  It is neat to see how far I've come with the running - last week I put in 14.03 miles in just the run.

Today in MN it is going to be beautiful (90) so I'm going to find a club that has an outdoor lap pool to go to after I meet with my trainer.

Wow! It looks like everyone had a crazy weekend! Saturday morning, I went for a run and got "lost". Actually, I got lost in my mind and thinking about things, kept going and ended up running 8 miles. I ran the first 6, then had to walk. I think all together I ran 7 or a little more. I was exhausted when it was over. I was hoping my mom who was coming to visit would drive by me and instead, she was about 5 minutes behind. So, I guess it was meant for me to go the 8 miles. I felt like crap for the last 1/2 mile, but great when it was over!

Really slow recovery\tapering run this morning for 5 miles at 10:54 pace and an average heart rate of 128. The first mile was at 12:09 and 130 heart rate. I just couldn't get loose and my heart rate kept spiking every time I tried to apply any gas whatsoever. After that I stabilized and felt much better. Good week to taper as every sign is leading to needing a bit of a break. Got to listen to the body and what it's telling you.

I hope you're correct. Ashland is on the long side with a full mile swim, 26 mile bike and 6.5 run. So everything is just slightly longer than standard. Also T1 involves a large hill from the water up to the bikes and the average last year was over 6 minutes. I just want to run a smart race and come in under 3 hours. I think being conservative that shouldn't be a problem. If I have a really good day I could break 2:50 which would be sweet but that's not the goal.

Sounds like a fun weekend.  Shark boy, LMAO, would have died if I saw that.

Okay, so report on my Sprint.  Beat last years time by 5 minutes, sounds good right?  I was disappointed.  I expected to beat it by 10 minutes or more.  I figured I would pick up 5 minutes on the run, and 5 on the bike, and some time on my transitions -- this is year 2 for me.  In reality, lost about 45 seconds on the swim (did a better job of pacing myself so I wasn't upset here, got out of the water not feeling like death...) and I was SLOWER on my already slow transitions by over a minute.  My bike was about 7 minutes faster, I felt great.  Paced around 20mph except on turns.  But it killed my run.  Legs were shot.  Probably should have had better nutrition midway on the bike, will fix that before my August Sprint.  Felt like I was running in water, quads and calves were very heavy.  Also realized I needed to do more outdoor cycling (as opposed to spin).  So my 5K was a minute better then last year, but felt much harder then it should have.

Anyway, more room for improvement!  I also think dropping 20 lbs would help a bunch....

Overall was 1:23.

You were 6% faster. That's nothing to sneeze at. It's all about the process. Embrace it and you'll get where you want to be.

Just keep in mind for a sprint triathlon your body doesn't need nutrition. You have enough carbs already in the body. If anything water might be all you need. Great job though...
