Swam 1600 this morning, followed by a 2.5 run. Not fast (45 min in the pool; 27 min running) but I felt great! Could have kept going if I didn't need to hot foot to work. :D

Only 10 days until my Sprint! Foggy, your training plan has definitely helped me too - I had to dial back the distance slightly a week or so ago, and now I'm feeling great again! Looking forward to the slow increase to Olympic distance.

FoggyGoggles - 2012-04-25 12:54 PM I've got to get to work on that!

Any help you can give is appreciated, but you've done a lot already! I can always follow something from one of my books if you don't have time.

Hey All,

Looks like the few of us are still around and you guys look to be doing good work!

I caught a bad cold.  I was off for 2 days from work and I haven't done any exercise since Sunday.  I'm still not 100% and need to get better for my half marathon that is on the 6th!

I'm really nervous that I won't be 100% by the time the race comes.

Been out for a while guys but I haven't stopped training as shown in my logs.  This week had a cool experience.  A local college had a grad student doing experiments for his masters thesis.  It involved cyclists and monitoring heart rates in relation to the anaerobic thresh hold.

So on Monday morning I went in for testing to set a baseline for his experiment.  I felt pretty cool all hooked up to computers with a snorkel style bit and nose clamp on with a big air hose strapped to me.  They ran me for as long as they could, keeping a cadence above 90 gradually increasing the watts and monitoring heart rate and breathing.  Only took 18 minutes and I finally couldn't maintain a cadence above 90 at 400 watts.  I didn't know what any of that meant but the guy doing the experiment was impressed and told me that I turned in the second best performance of all the subjects he tested.  He asked how long I'd been cycling and nearly fell over when I told him I bought my bicycle at Christmas and had been seriously training since January.

Came back on Thursday for the experiement which had me pedaling at a 90 cadence and increasing wattages based on my anaerobic threshold for 6 minutes with 3 minutes rest between test cycles.  This time the assistant he had was female, and very attractive which probably spurred me on to perform better.  During the test he told me based on the baseline test from Monday I had the cardio-respiratory system of a man 10 years younger than me.  That made my chest swell a  little.  As we continued on they kept track of my heart rate and in theory as I passed the anaerobic threshold high heart rate should have increased during the testing phase without plateauing.  However for the first two test past anaerobic threshold my heart rate would plateau in between 120 and 130.  At that point the young lady doing the test, who was recording heart rate data, looked at me and said "I don't think you're real, I think you're some sort of machine or something."  This made my week to say the least.  Eventually though they did manage to get my heart rate above 130.

It was really cool and they grad student had a report all prepared for me letting me know about my body.  He was Korean and at times tough to understand but he was very helpful, and even gave me a training program based on HR to help increase my endurance and invited me back in 3 months to see if it had worked.  Turns out my VO2 max is 51 ml/kg/min.  My body goes from aerobic to anaerobic at a heart rate of 127 bpm.  And my max sustainable wattage while seated (we were allowed to stand and pedal during the test) was 380.  And to top it all off they paid me $50.00.

So thats been my week.  It was interesting to say the least.

Thanks Marshpike!

Dsand97: Wow, that experiment sounds really neat! Well done!

Missed my turnaround point last night, and my 15 mile bike turned into 18, which apparently was fine. Averaged 16.01mph which I'm happy with since my previous workouts kept averaging around 14.6. Hopefully on race day w/o trail crossings & traffic, I'll be closer to 18. Followed up the ride with 10 minutes of running and got in .93 mile so I'm excited for the upcoming sprint!

Hoping for a PR from last year, which was my first tri:
600 yd swim, 12:31
T1, 2:10
13mi bike, 40:42
T2, 1:02
2.8mi run, 28:32

I'm really nervous that I won't be 100% by the time the race comes.

Even the elites get nervous its a natural emotion, the important thing to remember is to enjoy the experience and remember no one says you have to run every step of the way.

Well I had a great run this morning ran 18 miles in 2:34:50 (8.36 pace) with a 151bpm Av heart rate, I then finished it off with an additional 3.2 miles on the tredmill to support a world record distance attempt in the local shopping mall.

No injuries, no niggles, and my mind stayed focused, just love it when it all comes together!!

It was the guiness world record, the guy in the middle had 12 hrs on the treadmill to run more than 55 miles, he managed 63.01 miles to break teh guiness world record.

The two outside runners were just clubmembers running 30 min sessions to keep him company, I felt great coming from my run to have the ability to go another 30 min just need some careful planning and recovery over the next few weeks.

I'm keeping my swimming up along with my running, as soon as the marathon is over I'll be slowly introducing the bike that will leave me 3 months to the HIM.

What a cool event to participate in! Glory & fame by proxy.

Foggy: You said it, man! I know plenty athletes don't need to taper for a tri, but since it's only my 2nd & I'm still pretty early on in my athletic lifestyle, I'm gonna enjoy it! My last 2 "long" workouts this past weekend went really well I think. I logged em, so you can take a look if you're so inclined. Really, the 2.8 mi run portion of next weekend is gonna be a great opportunity for me to PR I think, & I feel strong on the bike. My swimming isn't quite where it was last year, but there's still a chance I might improve that time as well.

Posted new longs this weekend for myself.  Saturday knocked out an easy 7.2 mile run.  Not the longest I've ever done but my longest run since resuming any sort of a training regimen.  Also went 50 miles on the bike yesterday.  Was shooting for about 40, but felt so good we took a side trip that added a shade over 10 miles.  New distance for me.  Seemed easy as we were going very slow.  Had some guys who have done triathlons before but have just gotten back on the bike the past month or so.

Have moved my first tri back.  My original fell on a weekend that would have been bad for me as we had a company party the night before.  Therefore I am doing the TriAggieland sprint tri in July.  I will be more than ready for it and it should be a lot of fun to get back home.  Hope you all have a great training week.

Yeah our company is weird in that we as the satellite branch have our Christmas party in June.  It all started as a joke because the suits couldn't make it down for Christmas the first year and it got pushed all the way until Memorial Day.  After that it kind of became a strange tradition where our Christmas party is almost exactly 6 months after Christmas.

I went to school with all the guys I work for and needless to say we tend to get into the liquor cabinet pretty heavily on that night.  Most definately wouldn't be my best performance.

On a seperate note I was only planning on going Oly distance this year as my farthest, but my running has progressed much better than expected so I'm considering attacking a HIM in October.  Still in early consideration phases right now, we'll have to see.

Also down to 213 pounds and got my sights set on 210 and then who knows.  According to the proposed weight limit changes I'm no longer Clyde eligible and will have to duke it out with you speed demons in the AG's.

Your doing well on the weight front!!

Just a 1000m swim this evening 22min, gotg them to open up the 25m and although planned to do more I stopped after 40 lengths. don't think the 20 min in the sauna helped before hand....

More recovery than anything else at the minute

QD~ Logs look good. I like the swim sets you're putting together. Where in the cities do you live? It sounds like you need to hit some country roads for your bike training. (Too bad your tri lands on this weekend. We have a group ride Saturday morning out at the Liberty course.)

Yeah, I live about a mile south of downtown. Hate battling traffic! I've fit in a couple rural training rides out by my mom's house in Wisconsin - WAY hillier than the Alexandria course, so it was nice to mix it up a bit. Definitely interested in some group rides over the summer months.

Timed 600m in the pool last night (race is 600yds, so about a length shorter) at a depressing 14:13 which if my math is right, for 600yds would work out to about 13:08. My race time last year was 12:31 and I was hoping to be in a position to break 12:00 this year, but I may have to settle for 12:30 again. I was holding back a *little* last night, but not much. Granted, I did the swim immediately after a hard 2 mile run so who knows. Just wish I had a more accurate time estimate to give the race officials Saturday morning.

Weather for the race is predicted as "scattered thunderstorms; 30% chance of rain; 15mph winds". UGH. They've been wrong a lot lately, though, so hopefully it will be 60 & sunny! lol

Been hit with a bit of head cold the last few days, not quite man flu yet but taking it easy with a few lemsips.

I have my next half marathon on Wednesday evening so hopefully I can put into practice what I've been training, slow start and progress to my target pace.

THREE WEEKS to the full marathon!!

Sorry, I have been MIA for a while! Between my training, my son's sports and Cub Scouts I have been BUSY! Training is going AWESOME! I did a duathlon run/bike/run a few weeks back and had a blast. I finally got my breathing under control in the swim and did 600 solid the other day, my longest solid swim yet! I have a half-marathon on the books for may 19th and just registered for my first full in Oct.

My first Tri is only 4 weeks away now, and I can't wait! Hope everyone's training and now racing is going well!

Jenny

I'm hoping to have time to type up my race report tomorrow, but here's a brief recap for all of you:

Compared to last year, I took over a minute off my swim time, reduced both transition times, and shaved 41 seconds off my run. Unfortunately I lost over 2 minutes on the bike, so my overall time was only 12 seconds faster than last year, but hey, still a PR! :D

Despite the chilly drizzle for most of the bike & all of the run, I had a total blast. Best part of the day though? My mom placed 3rd in her age group for her first triathlon!

That's great QD all round!!

Jenny nice to see you back on...

I have a bit of an achilies problem at the minute (I must be the most injury proned person on the planet), I believe its just been overloaded slightly as a result of my calf strain although 3hrs on the dance floor last night didn't help much

All good though!!

Great job QD!  And great job to your mom too!  That's fantastic!

I was able to finish my first half marathon on Sunday.  My race log is here:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=439013

Overall i'm happy that I was able to complete it.  I left a lot of me out there so I know the cramping was my body's saying there is no more left today.

I'm planning on signing up for another half marathon in September when the tri season is pretty much wrapped up.
