Well, here's how it went. My race is a 1/3 swim, 17 mile bike and 5K. My brick this morning was 14.1 bike and 2.27 run. The bike was terrible! I never got comfortable. Only had to completely stop once and rarely rode on my aero bars. My run was my familiar loop through my neighborhood and another. No issues with the route. However, this is where the dehydration caught up with me. My calves began cramping within the first 1/4 mile and I had to stop and stretch twice before the first 1/2 mile. They finally stopped cramping and I finished my run. Here are my totals. Overall, I'm fairly satisfied. I just hope race day will be better. Today was aweful! Bike: 14.1 miles, 48:04, 17.6 mph Transition: 2:17 Run: 2.27 miles, 18:50, 8:17 per mile Total time: 1:09:12 Wow those are some great times! You will kick butt in your race. |

Good luck with the massage. I have a few friends that swear by acupuncture too. BTW, UNR? I almost went there. I had an interesting weekend, did a mid-distance (16mi) bike ride with some fartleks in it, and while coming in I felt a lot fresher than I anticipated so I turned it into an impromptu brick, and added on a 2.2 mile run. My first brick was a painful experience where I wanted to puke and die of cramping. This one was downright pleasant in comparison. Felt strong at the end, kinda wished I had gone an extra mile. Makes me think that getting through this sprint will be "no big deal" if I can get my swimming figured out. Already looking for a half marathon to do in the fall, to help bring up my weak running. Sunday, headed over to CDA and watched the Ironman. Winning pro got in at 8 hours 17 minutes. Which is absolutely amazing. Sporting a sweet sunburn, and didn't do my run yesterday, but that's ok I think. Learned a bit about what goes on. One thing I was looking at and wondering is how to directly increase pedaling power. When doing my rides I'm sitting around 15-16mph, these top level Ironman guys are averaging 23mph. Now I know that's thousands of miles of practice, but there has to be something I can do to get up a couple mph. Any recs? |

I'm going to try and swim 2-3 times for the next 6 weeks (well, b/c I have a 70.3 relay then and have not been training.) I'm also starting a half marathon plan- so going to do some more running. I'm on vacation for a week and a half after the 4th- so I should have a ton of time to train and get in a lot of mountain biking. Please feel free to send me a love note on my logs if you don't see this activity increase. |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open How much does everyone drink in an hour on the bike? I am just starting to get rides around the hour mark and have no idea if I am drinking too much or not enough. Like today I did 55 minutes and drank 2 full bottles. Is this normal or excessive? On rides of 1.5 hours or greater how do you carry enough water or just plan it in a loop to pick up more? Will 2 be enough for a 2 hour ride? I have no idea and don't want to do something stupid in the Florida heat far away from home and stores and run out of fluids. On this same topic, roughly how many calories should someone be taking in per hour as well? I'm sure this has been covered a bazillion times but the posts I read seemed like brag fests on how far they can go without anything which doesn't seem like the smartest option. |

Depends on the heat and humidity. I will usually fill up both bottles and take them with me. On a fast two hour group ride, I usually only drink one of them. In a three hour ride, I might drink 1.5 or 2 bottles. I've also done 60+ miles on two bottles and 500 calories, which was a mistake. On Sunday, I did 45 miles in about 2.5 hours, with two bottles (one water, one vitaminwater), and a couple of 90 calorie oatmeal bars. That was sufficient for me. Temps were right at 90 degrees, with humidity around 80%. My calorie burn for that ride was around 1,200. I always have $20 and a cell phone with me, plus a repair kit (tube, CO2, patch kit, tire levers), so worst case scenario is I find a shady spot and wait for the cavalry. I'm also 29 and in the best shape of my life, so my reckless abandon might not suit everyone. Plan your routes so that, at least at some points, you can find a park with a fountain or a gas station or something, just in case, especially in the back end of the ride. |

I usually take one with Gatorade and if it's really hot I'll take one with just water. I do most of my longer rides on my mtn bike so just bring my camel back. I wouldn't worry about being excessive- just drink what you feel like. Do you have the bigger bottles or littler ones? |

Intake is person specific. While your training, your going to develop your own nutrition that works for your own needs. I used this for my HIM last year for long training rides. My rides were in the country with no access to water, so I carried my own. I had this and 2 cages on my frame with 4 20 oz. water bottles. 2 with gatoraid/water mix, and 2 with water. I also filled with ice first on hot days to keep water as cool as possible. http://www.pricepoint.com/Brand/Profile/Profile-Design-Rear-Mount-S... Edited to add that I also used a bento box that most people put things like gels/cell phones. I put my homemade smoked salmon concoction in it for fuel during HIM. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, but it worked for calories. Edited by kevinbe 2013-06-25 4:58 PM |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Well thanks for the reality check on the HIM plans. Guess my drive got the best of me for a minute there. I have went back to my original plans of oly at the end of Sept and another sprint in Dec. No sense in doing a race if all I want to do is vomit and die. I'll stick with the HIM plan of May 2014. The decision was easier after the ride today that whooped my butt and I imagined doing that for 56 miles with a HM still to go. No thanks I'll pass for nearly another year and get ready properly Had an Agave Wheat from Breckenridge Brewery for dinner and loved it. |

Anyone else have issues with the auto-calculated paces? How does 23:59 on a 3-mile run work out to 7:47 per mile? I tried to manually enter pace, but it recalculates it. Oh well. What a great race though - first tri, ocean swim and everything. Had a great time, took it relatively easy on the swim because I had no idea what to expect, but pushed a little harder on the bike and big-time on the run. Since I'm signed up for a 3-race series this summer on the same course I have a time to beat for July, just need to keep momentum between now and then. Hope everyone's having a good week, Andres |

I was up to 211 a few days ago, but have gotten it back down to 206 today. I'm going to start running again today, and take it from there. Maybe sign up for a 10K on October if I can get into good running shape and get the weight under control. Flirting with the idea of going all in on May marathon again leading into next season. |

Very discouraging. I went from eating mass quantities of junky food, basically eating whatever, whenever, to eating healthier more often in smaller proportions. I've yo-yoed for 20 years like this, but it's never gotten to the point where I weighed that much. That's a little scary. Also, I haven't had an adult style beverage in 3 days. I'm getting some increases in the water, but I'm still noticing that when I'm tired, I seem to be moving at just inches per pull. Would be nice if I could do the race using paddles, because I'd be done super quick and without any real stress on me. My swim coach is helping clean up my stroke a lot, but now I really need to start looking at how to increase my fitness to go the distance, swimming is still the only sport where I'm iffy. I know I can ride the distance, and do it well. I know I can run. I don't actually know if I can swim the distance yet, so I need to just add in yardage. I have a month, I'm thinking if I can hit 3x to 4x a week swims, I'll be able to get it handled. |

It bothered me a few years ago and the adjustment worked so I went back. Long story short one leg was longer than the other which was causing pain and more than likely the root to my IT band issues. He said give it 3 days for the tenderness to go away and it should be better. He also asked if my shoulder was bothering me on the swim and said it was out of whack also. Time for ice and rest then I'll be brand new. My health is almost back to 100%, just in time for my first race next weekend. How did you practice getting your shoes on during the ride? That's on my todo list. Thanks - I try to set things up so that there's only one way to do them, especially when you're not functioning at 100% (good life concept, not just in triathlon). If you lay the shirt on top of the helmet, you have to remove it (and hopefully think to put it on) BEFORE you can pick up the helmet and strap it on. On the shoes, I just did some practice on/offs in my neighborhood, I'm sure anyone looking out their windows was wondering what the heck I was doing. I rubber-banded my shoes so they'd be parallel to the ground and not drag when I was rolling the bike (through the finger loops and onto the frame or bottle cages) then tried a running start. Once you get your feet on top of the shoes you can start pedaling, the rubber bands snap and fall away, then practice reaching down, getting a finger in the loop and sticking a foot in, pedal again to keep momentum, then reach down to fasten the velcro. I rode around for a while un-velcro-ing and pulling feet out, riding on the tops of the shoes, then putting feet back in and re-velcro-ing. I did it in the race only because I got comfortable practicing around my neighborhood like that; if not I would have just put my shoes on while sitting on the ground and walked/jogged in cleats until exiting transition, most people were doing that. |
