Amazing...I'm honestly not sure that I'll be able to do the same when I have kids. Not exactly a lack of confidence; the realist in me just says, "THERE'S NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE DAY!!" I must have missed it... can we still donate for your MS ride? link please. |

I've been fighting this feeling all spring if you remember, well I was invited to come race for free today at a small local tri and I turned it down. If I can't get motivated to race for free then what will it take?! Oh, Dina...... You'll find your motivation. I've been lacking this year, too. This is the year of having fun and not worrying about PRs. I've been meeting some very lovely people at the back of the pack and at race registrations when I volunteer. In fact, I'm volunteering at a 5K race tomorrow! I'm riding my bike there and back. Should be fun! |

Jonathan, you have a firm grasp on reality. Most people in your position would probably fool themselves in to thinking they will have time to do it all. You are ahead of the game. It shows that you have a commitment to being properly involved in your children's lives, both for their sake and to share the burden with your wife. That being said, if triathlon is a high enough priority you will find a way to do it. Not necessarily 20 hour training weeks, but maybe 7-8? I agree. I've had to give up pretty much all other hobbies to pursue triathlon, but it's possible. Of course it helps to have a job with flexibility. I work lots, but I can choose my own hours somewhat. Of course, for the long distance stuff, then that's going to be hard w/ a full time job and family. Also, I only have a 3 month old, so that's why I want to go for the IM this year. I know it will be harder to get that much time away as she grows and as we add more little humans... |

Not yet... but I have time (200 spots left in the full and it normally doesnt fill up until end of Sept). Just to clarify with everyone where I'm at, I believe I'm up for the challenge. But, I'm being very careful because I know how big a commitment it is. My wife has already given me the green light, but we haven't had an in-depth discussion about it yet, so before I sign up, I want to make sure she understands the magnitude of it... it's one of those discussions that has to happen under the right circumstances (no distractions, both focused, etc) and we just havent found the time to have it yet. My plan is to go over the training schedule with her and give her a copy of it and then pick a few "family" nights that we say nothing will interrupt. After we do this, I plan to actually sign up. In the meantime, yes... the question crosses my mind frequently: "Can I finish an IM?"... my answer: "I'm about to find out"... ha! |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I hope everyone is having a great weekend. I finished race number 2 this season. I had my Oly this morning and sort of mixed results. I finished 35 seconds slower than I did last year. Not really a big deal though and not to make any excuses though either. I've never done races in back to back weeks before and last week's race was a HIM in some really brutal weather conditions. I know, I know I sound like I'm making excuses lol. I didn't train much this week and I've been dragging all week so I can't really be unhappy with this result. I went as hard as I possibly could push myself today, anything less would have been unacceptable to me. In any case a quick summary along with this year vs. last year's results. 2012 Riverhead Rocks Result Swim - 31:45 Bike - 1:20:52 Run - 56:37 2013 Riverhead Rocks Result Swim - 29:50 Bike - 1:17:55 Run - 1:02:54 Swim - Not a bad overall swim today but I got off to a rough start. I forgot to pull my goggles down when I jumped in the water DOH! It's a time trial swim so every 5 seconds they send two people. It took me a bit to get the googles on and the water out. The first 300 meters or so weren't very good but I got much better after I settled in a bit over the next 300 meters and even better after the turnaround heading back. I think I swam the last 900 meters pretty well. I got into a good rythym and had a nice swim that last stretch. I was able to get on the deck this year with out anyone pulling me out plus I didn't run and fall on the dock this year either. I learned my lesson last year. Bike - I totally hammered on the bike today from start to finish. There were very few places that I let up and took any type of rest on the bike. The only coasting I did was on the one big downhill other than that I really kept the hammer down and rode hard. I don't think I was 100% rested though. I think I could have done better. I passed a lot of people and really didn't get passed much at all. I was definitely getting tired towards the end of the ride, the last 5 miles were tough but overall I'm very happy with the way I rode today. One other thing to note I didn't drink as much as I should've on the bike. It was humid out today and drank very little while on the bike. Run - I didn't think I would have anything left for the run but I did manage to run faster than I thought I would. I went out to hard in the first mile and reeled myself in for the next two miles. It's a 2 loop course so I was just trying to get through the first loop and make it to the second loop. I think more of the same on the second loop I was just hoping to have enough to sprint to the finish. I was able to do that and finish strong but my run 6 minutes slower this year. I think the HIM, the lack of running, poor nutrition and the fact that I went hard on the bike sort of did me in on the run today. I'll try and get the race report up later on today. |

Go forward like you are going to do it but since you have signed up yet you have nothing to lose. I also think getting your wife on board with the commitment you need to make is key. Good plan in my opinion. I ask myself that same question every day so you are not alone lol! |

Extreme Veteran 868 Racine, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Congrats Tony! Will good call on the IM. Sounds like you have a great plan. I need some help. I am getting discouraged at no improvement on the bike aside from riding more which I honestly don't think has helped me any. Iam considering doing a biking program with Vision quest (Robby Ventura) Or books? Or bike group ? All of the above. I will do anything at this point 13 mph in a race just isn't cutting it I have made myself a promise to learn everything about my bike including maintenance and to figure out what my issue is.......suggestions needed! |

JoAnne I know the guys and gals here can probably give you better advice than I on this as they are stronger bikers than I am. However in the short time I have been doing this I found two things that have really helped improve my biking. One was the interval work over the winter, doing Jorge's plan really helped me improve my power so I can ride faster over longer distances. The second thing that has helped me is getting in small group rides with some of the guys who are much stronger than I am on the bike. Just trying to stay with them makes me have to ride harder to keep up. I think these two things have really helped me improve. The other thing that has helped me is riding more hills. I have definitely gotten better this year riding the hills. I think we can build endurance pretty quickly but I think in order to get stronger on the bike you really need to ride hard whether it's the group rides, the interval work or the hill climbing. I've found that these things have helped me alot. I'll defer to the experts here on this but just wanted to share that with you. |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I decided to do another impromptu race today. I rode my bike 21 miles to the race start where I was scheduled to help with registration. I had to take a loooooong break on the way there for a cattle drive gone wrong. The cowboy (sans horse) started yelling "STOP....STOP!!!!" He was running towards me and jumped through the fence. There was a bull amongst the wayward cows on a road that is about the width of half a mini Cooper. I happily stopped and waited for him to wrangle the cows. I was late to registration. Thankfully, there were plenty of people to help. In fact, there were so many people, I was able to run the 5K! I didn't race it, though. I just did a nice strong Z3 run. It felt good. My husband and munchkin ran the race, too! My super star, four year old ran it in 37:55! I'm so proud of him! |

Veteran 454 Cairo, GA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hey Junkies! quick check in for me! Tony and Dirk- Congrats on your races this weekend! Will- I feel ya, June flew by wayyyy too quickly. Dina-- We all have season we go through and maybe this is a time to look inward and see where your heart is. I know I have gone through times like this during snowboarding. All I can say I'd don't try to force something that isn't in your heart. Maybe you can enjoy triathlon from a different perspective for a bit? As for me, no training the past three days. Drove 5 hours for Herbalife training yesterday. The 5k I was hoping to run in was cancelled due to lightning. Training was awesome; had to do household chores all day today.... I need MORE time! My June totals: Swim - 14,050 yds, 6:30 hours Bike - 168 miles, 11 hours Run - 49.75 miles, 8:20 hours definitely up from May, but I really need to get my biking up and I can see how missing 1 bike and 1 run session per week has lowered my #s from where I want to be. |

If I can't get motivated to race for free then what will it take?! Rather than racing take some time to volunteer at some races. Give back to your sport a little more and see what happens. You know you don't have to do triathlon any more either. We go through season in life and maybe you're moving past this one. There is nothing wrong with moving on other than you aren't allowed to leave the Junkies. You are only allowed to move on past the junkies when we're all dead. If you don't get your mojo back that's fine. However, keep doing things to keep yourself fit and healthy. We'll love with or without triathlon. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Here are my June numbers: Swim: 9623.08 Yd Bike: 479.18 Mi Run: 73.32 Mi My run was much lower than I like at all. I am missing 27 miles from my target for the month but I am still over my target for the year. I am looking to get 100 per month and 1200 for the year. My bike is a little bit lower but still acceptable. I was looking for 500 miles for the month and I'm on target for a better than 5000 mile year with my plans for riding the rest of the season. Swim again is lower than planned and this is always a fight because of pool availability. Some of these days I had storm repairs to make and others were unplanned days away from training. However, I did have some lazy days I simply decided not to train..........like yesterday. Edited by DirkP 2013-07-01 3:50 PM |
