1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open Cynthia, I hear you. Hubby has been gone for a week and is now in Canada fishing for a week and back on the road for another week after that. I have young kids and trying to figure out how to make this work is sometimes very frustrating (no sitters, etc). What race are you training for? I don't think I'd have enough time to train for anything but a sprint! I'm hoping to do an Oly in September but definitely playing by ear and hoping it doesn't fill. 10/28 with a bike and ows in the new wetsuit yesterday. Today is a break (hubby out of town). Working through my mental anxiety of seaweed swimming and finally started to loosen up a bit toward the end. When I relaxed I could cruise. Also practiced a little opposite side breathing - working to get comfortable with that in ows. I think I'm better at it in open water than in a pool...go figure. Got to incorporate the race course in my ride yesterday which was cool. I biked with someone else who is also doing the tri, but she doesn't have clipless pedals so I had to wait at every hill and often elsewhere. It was fine - made me appreciate my pedals!! I also know by looking at my time I will go a bit faster in the race. Finished up yesterday with 2 Saranac Pale Ales and a giant burger. Cheers all! Jenn |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open Originally posted by SportzVision Originally posted by Qua17 I ran around our lake this morning - 13.5 miles. Right now, it's all about testing my plan and things seem to be working. I need to dial in my hr... For example, I was hoping to keep my HR under 125 for the first 5 miles today but that wasn't possible. I was close but my alarm kept going off because my hr kept rising to 128-130. And this was early in my run. I have no clue what my hr will be on race day coming off the bike. I would think it would be higher having just finished the bike. The goal is to keep it really slow so I've got plenty of energy to burn on the 2nd 13 mile loop. What do you all think. I'm wondering if playing around with perceived rate of exertion might help. Thoughts? My hip hurts again and I need to start doing all the small things (like icing and rolling more - plus I'm not eating great (and I'm drinking crappy beer)). I feel like I'm so close but in reality - anything could happen in the next five weeks. Might need to set up a coors light penalty for myself if I don't keep it on the straight and narrow. I'm off to visit my cousin and his kids. Should be able to get in a bike ride and a swim. I hope everyone has a great weekend! DQ Your diet plays a huge role...try some quinoa and veggies added to your diet...check your protein. Just a thought. Oh wise one - plays a huge role in? Sore hip? Blood pressure? Weight? I'm willing to try anything. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open Had a crazy ride today. My goal was to moderate my pacing so I didn't burn too many matches early on and to gain every foot of elevation. I was stoked to bag 6100 feet of elevation gain in 109 miles of riding. So I know I can do the bike distance. I need to figure out how to pick up the pace - 13.5 average isn't going to get it done. Any suggestions on things I can do on a hilly course to maximize my speed without putting myself at too much risk. I'm open to any suggestions. Right now - I'm hammering the downhills, keeping in the drops, and trying to speed up near the top so I get get the greatest rate of speed on the decent. Other ideas? Coolest part of ride - having a momma blackbear and her 4 cubs crossed the road about 100 feet in front of me. A car that had just passed me almost hit them (one of the cubs headed back into the woods and didn't follow his fam. Hope the little one is OK.) After seeing that - I was so amped up, I picked up the pace a couple miles an hour! I hope everyone who raced is happy with their performance and we are all happy and healthy! |

462 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open Well I made it. Ballatyne went awesome. Not only did my daughter finish but she showed a competitive side I've never seen in her. I was soooooo proud. She was the only 5yo girl that competed. After I raced we went to eat before her race and she told me she wanted to quit. I told her I wouldn't allow that but if she didn't like it she never had to do it again, when it was over she asked when she could race again On a side note I was shooting for a 16mph average on bike, I got 17.8 and I tied my pr for a 5 k. My race Sunday I shaved 8 min off last year and took fist in Clydesdale (last year it was my first tri ever). Race report is on Garmin connect. After watching me race my brother in law decided he is going to race with me next year. All in all I call it a great weekend. Now that you have the base covered for the distance you can start doing some serious threshold and VO2 work on the bike. I do hard hill intervals for this. There's a big climb near my house that is 800m in length. I ride up it as hard as I can and repeat this 5-10 times. Also do intervals on the flats. Do one km hard and one normal pace. Do this on a longish ride and it will help increase overall speed. Also do some rides at threshold pace. |

I just placed the saddle according to the websites recommendation. I am going to actually take it out tomorrow and see how it feels over a longer distance with bike shorts on. Then I will try some tweaking. I registered for my race. Since, I waited so long, it was $96. So, I am doing it!!! Congrats on registering! You're gonna have a blast! |

553 St Catharines, Ontario | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open Oh that's a lovely bike. Makes me more than a little jealous. Slow weekend but I at least got some learning in with a swim in lake Erie. It didn't last long enough to help with form but every open water experience is a bonus. The water there is relatively clear but i had some lake weeds cling to my face and goggles which was a good lesson in patience and calm. Also there were tons of bathers and on the other side of the ropes lots of jet-skis and recreational boats. So lots to sight on and tons of waves and wake to compensate for. Plan for this week is to keep getting some quality runs and double bike session in to build some good base and shake some pounds off. Also to find some time to kick start my swimming again. Weekend beer was this lovely stuff: |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open 13/28 this morning with a nice ride/run brick - one right after the other. Did the 12.3 mile ride with the Barber Farm Road hill climb (grade 4 on Strava), had my fastest time on this ride (and with having to stop for tractor mowing). VERY HUMID today and hot. yuck. I followed this up with a 3 mile run right after. It's strange - that sort of drunken feeling when you're trying to run right after getting off a bike. It takes me about 1/2 mile to start to feel "normal" like I'm not running a zigzag. So I've covered those two distances in a row that I'll be racing so I know I can do it in a reasonable amount of time. Wore my tri outfit and that feels good. I just haven't worn it under my wetsuit yet. Hoping to get in an ows and test that piece of the puzzle out. I have a huge respect for all those racing longer distances - your physical strength and mental strength are forces to be reckoned with! Tonight I will enjoy a Switchback...all 24 oz of it. Best, Jenn |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Accountability/Appreciation Society - Open Don't know if I had mentioned this - but I've hit my first major snag this summer in my IM training. My #!*$%ing hip is sore again. It started hurting after running 13 last week and has been coming up to full song this week. I've been icing it like it's my job and even had a backrub yesterday (which was terrible! - the woman was 60 and was more interested in relaxation (read mood music and candles) than the painful but necessary miofacial release that I needed. I took yesterday and today off and the pain has gotten a little better but it puts tomorrow's workout in jeopardy. My body needs to get with the program - I need two more weeks out of it and then it gets to enjoy it's taper. On the plus side, my friend from college gets here tomorrow so that means I can start drinking quality beer again. Oh two hearted ale by Bells - how I have missed you! |
