Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go, Malph!! I'm in. There you are, Mark! Music: Too many to name. This week's desert island faves: Booker T & the MG's - ABBA (shut up! we're talking running, right?) - Barenaked Ladies - Jack Johnson - Stevie Ray Vaughn - Aretha Franklin - UB40 - Professor Longhair - Phish - Steel Pulse - Little Feat - Jerry Garcia Band - Coldplay - Ry Cooder - Cherry Poppin Daddies - Hank Williams Jr - Blues Traveler - Cake - Prince - Red Hot Chili Peppers Phoenix - It may not be that way for you - but for me, treadmills kill - running that six outside is MUCH easier - I'll bet you'll do great with it. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Music Bodyrockers "I Like the Way (You Move)" always gets me started and then a selection of... Fat boy slim "Praise You" Bolly Bolly (a compilation of Bhangra music sampling popular artists) AC/DC live album ELO (good beats) Any '70s disco diva stuff Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill Gang Vivaldi's Four Seasons when I'm stretching etc When I am forced to use the stationary bike in the gym I try to get the TV onto a sports channel (showing soccer which is, I appreciate, an awful game but is good for these purposes) and, for a hard forty minute workout I train to the play as in, when one side has the ball I go easy(ish) and when the other team get it I go like the clappers. Soccer, unlike your rather quaint game of football, has frequent changes of possession and this means that you have no idea how long you can take it easy for or how long you have to go flat out for. Frequent changes raise the heart rate and the whole thing feels like a spin class without the excruciatingly fit instructor encouraging "just a little bit more" out of your already crippled physique! Raises a sweat nicely. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pene, forget about the time, think of the distance. Thats almost 10k and is an awesome workout. Now I started reading a new book called 'running room's guide to running'. Its a good 500pages so I will post more as I come across it, but the author has a training theory that he uses called 10:1. Meaning running 10 mins, walking 1min. He goes on to say that walking is a part of running, and he has trained people to do marathons in very little time using this method. And guess what he even called walking at one point. PACING! lol so its ok to walk, and probably in your best interest to walk 1/10th of the time.
On a side note it looks like I may be quitting my job at the end of the month. So that means lots of time for training in May! At least until I find another job, which may come faster than I want it to. oh well. Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. It was a good day. Up at 5am for the race, then slept most of the night away lol. I'm not big on the birthday stuff, but got lots of more sexy body armor stuff! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Im back! I have been reading all week but for some reason havent had the time ever to really write back. I think it had to do with working 7 days in a row last week. I am in the middle of a 4 day no work stretch now so Im recuperating. Its beena busy week for y'all, lots of writing and Pene has signed up for a marathon, Robb did his 5K, BGT got an award, and Malph is about to pop the cherry! SanFrancisco Nike Marathon-It was one of my best racing experiences ever, but one of the hardest. Its hilly. Even though they call it a "flatter" course, theres still hills. Yep, I will be there too but doing the half-marathon (is that an option for you or do you have to do the marathon?) And Yes, thats the blue tiffany's box Im holding in my picture, its a necklace with a sun pendant and a runner sketched in the middle. Its pretty cool. The Team in Training racers were in full force and I was very inspired by them. No matter what happens Pene, you will have a great time. I know a few people who have done TNT and have loved it. Ill sponsor you too! And then we can have a drink after the race ! Malph: Im excited for your first race! A few tips would be to plan out your clothing and gear now and make sure you have everything you need. Plan your transitions-when you set up your stuff, lay out everything you need for each transition in a specific place. For example, I lay my bike jersey over the bike with my helmet and sunglasses underneath. And a towel to sit on with my socks and bike shoes on top. That way you wont be scrambling looking for stuff. I would also put a sports drink on your bike so you can get a few calories. If you are up a few hours before the race, eat something with substance about 2 hrs before the race (like oatmeal or high carb cereal or whole wheat toast and some fruit) and then about 1/2 hr before eat something like Mark said,a power bar or something. I mean, if you are used to that. I will try and do some of it with you in spririt! Actually, Im following this training plan right now and I need to do a brick workout on Thursday, not Friday and Im working in the ER during the time you will be racing, so I will try and do it on thursday and let you know how it goes. I really like the idea of doing eachothers' races together. Good Idea Mark! ![]() Ok, Music- I wont put my whole playlist down now, but I did have the idea of trying other's people playlists- does any techie out there know if there is any way to transfer songs to each other online? Anyway, I started thinking about what my top few songs are- i made a 2 1/2 hr playlist for my half marathon last year, it was great. It started with this song called "You're a Superstar"-by Love, Inc-an obscure pop electronica song that everyone should have to get them inspired. Anyway, top faves: Cake : "Going the Distance" Rihanna: "Pon De Replay" This has to be one of the BEST running songs ever, I swear. If you havent heard it yet, find it online and just listen to a clip-theres a line that goes "Let the bass from the speakers run through your sneakers; move both your feet and run to the Beat." Its great! Black Eyed Peas: "Pump It" The Killers" Mr. Bright Eyes" Jackson 5 "Want you Back" Madonna "Like a Prayer" Iggy Pop "Lust for Life" DeeLite "Groove is in the Heart" Ok, thats enuff for now~i have to read back and see if there is anything else Ive missed. Oh-good job to everyone on their training! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Malph - Our races are on the same day. Way cool !!! While I won't be joining in the first annual Malph-OZ-Tri at the same time with the rest of the group, I'll be doing mine earlier in the day (7:30am Eastern) and will send all my leftover energy your way ! Don't worry about the nerves too much. I was way nervous before the adventure race I did and then all of a sudden it was time to start and I was like "Oh $h1t !, time to go ???!!!" All the butterfly's were gone and I was too focused on the run (our first event in that race) to be nervous. So... To commemorate you popping your tri-cherry, I will raise a glass and consume copius amounts of Fosters during your race while I nurse the sore muscles from mine ! Good luck to you and have fun !!! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rob--You mean I'm doing something RIGHT???? Thanks for that ![]() She who runs over duck feet--you'll never live that down now, ya know ![]() I ordered a hypnosis cd for dealing with asthma, and subliminals for cycling (training, competition and post recovery), competitive swim and endurance running. And also a subliminal prosperity tape. Didn't break the bank, don't worry. I just have too much tension surrounding breathing in swim and not having an attack during runs. I either need to take up drinking to relax, Xanax, or do the tapes. So, I went with the tapes ![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Phoenix - What is the difference between subliminal and hypnosis tapes? Let me know how the pain controll one is and how these work. Malphh- Yea Its on a weekend and it starts in the evening, now if the tri's could start latter in the days all the time. Prof- thank you for the swim info, I will do these but not all in one day. The ladder is more than .50 mile? I will do the ladder in one day and see how it goes. fly's thru the water- Congratulations on your race!! Sat the 14th at 5:30 pm I will be at the Gym doing the tri. I will time myself and let you all know how it goes. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Now I'm wondering how far Sean's race is??? Maybe those of you more advanced in tri training (Mark, Prof, Helen with the run, Watergirl) should do BOTH Malph's AND Sean's distances??? Or at least do more distances in the event(s) you are most gifted? That sounds more fair. Otherwise I'll be turning in my pitiful long times and you experienced jocks will be kickin my butt. I'll be too embarrassed to post my times. (actually I gave up embarrassment for Lent) You know, that's one way to write a's's twice in the same line without edit ![]() I think hypnosis is more of a technique for learning to relax the mind and then offer suggestions to the conscious that way. Subliminals are totally for the subconscious. I think I need both, or whatever works better. I used to do an "opportunities" subliminal and landed my first associateship with it. It only lasted three months, but the folks from that doc's practice loved me and found me when I set up my own practice 20 miles up the road from him and begged me to come to Wisconsin, where they were from (this was in Iowa at the time). So, I did BOTH Iowa and Wisconsin practices for 3 years, and then bought my building in WI and moved here and closed the Iowa office. Now the Iowa folks travel to Wisconsin to see me. So, to make a long story short, I believe in subliminals. Yes, you have to add hard work and talent to the mix for success, but you can't discount those subconscious messages. I have too many deeply ingrained negative messages and beliefs about my physical self, and must constantly fight them. I hope the tapes make that process easier. GOOD LUCK SEAN and MALPH!!! Look at the swinging watch now and listen to my soothing voice as it tells you, "you are wonderful, you are a gifted athlete, you will now kick redbike at your tri's, you will have a great time, you will be pain free". Did it work?? ![]() |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Heh guys- just getting caught up on everyone's posts. Looks likes everyone has been ++ busy. -good luck Sean and Malph on your races this weekend- will thinks of you guys as I’m out on my long run!!! And Sean- especially like the Fosters idea!!! -Phene- believe in subliminal and pain control tapes- they got me thru years of chronic pain – yes they do work - sadly to say I have been listening to the same tunes on my MP3 for three bloody years!! Sure glad I love the Barenaked Ladies, Moody Blues, Davie Bowie, U2, Cher, ACDC, and some Madonna. And –one of my fav’s- Brickhouse!!! Go Motown!! ( Mark- wish you were closer so you could download your tunes into my MP3 player- nice music (esp Vivaldi!!) -Robb very cool about the new gear you received for your B-day. Now that you are a triathelete- you can now ask for neat gifts like water bottles, elastic laces, spandex, new bikes (ha ha- sounds like you are doing ok re-building your machine!!! ) -Prof- thanks for the explanation re swim sets- that helped ++ -Jeanette- I too was once in amazing physical condition- got sick with the big yucky horrible “C” diagnosis- put on tons of wt- and now – healthy, somewhat lighter (always those last 10-15 lbs-right!!!)- and working on completing a Olympic distance tri this summer and a marathon (I Hope!!) Hang in kiddo- hang in!!! -and the rest of the gang a big hello- keep training hard!! -Still have this darn cold- going to catch some shut eye and hopefully whip it out of me -Helen |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Helen, You survived CANCER!! WOW! Adding you to my list of folks I think of when I train for San Fran!! No wonder you have so much strength and fight in you!! You have even more of my admiration lady ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay I did it. If Helen says the tapes work for pain control, then that's good enough for me. So I found the Hypnosis Network and there is a Jack Singer, Ph.D., a sports psychologist and hypnotherapist, who has this whole CD bundle with Pain Management for Sports, Athletic Performance, and something about Healing and Recovery post exercise ( I suppose he tells your body to heal faster). It sounded pretty legit, so I went with it. So now I'll have hypnosis and subliminals (the subliminals are more specific for cycling, running and swimming). Even thought about getting a Love hypnosis CD, but then I figured I'd get overwhelmed with the wrong sort of love again, like when I was on those sites for dating. It was sort of fun, but very distracting, and definitely confusing! You all don't think I'm a Domme, do you? Geesh. We got tons of snow yesterday. That should make three times on the Robin's tail now. (the Amish say it has to snow three times after you first see robins again before it's really spring). School is two hours late today, so I get to hang on the computer and leisurely sip my coffee for a change. Usually it's grand central station here a.m.'s! There's a black hole in my house that devours little shoes, Noah's glasses and hats/mittens and spits them back out when we give up and leave for the day. Then we find them in exactly the same spot that we looked 40 times in the morning. So, no outdoor training for this wimp today. Guess I'll bundle up Mose and take him to the Y. Maybe call Carlos to drill me with the swim. He thinks I just need to learn to relax more with it and has been scratching his head to figure that out. Maybe the CD's will help? |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Helen- I am so glad that you are better. You are an amazing woman. Sean and Malph- I am supporting you both on Saturday by doing a tri at the Gym! Phoenix + I am doing the tri's to loose weight because a couple years ago I had an L1 compression fracture and disk problems in the back. After wearing a brace I gained a ton of weight. I tried traditional med and it didnt work too well. I tried accupuncture and it helped a lot. I went to a chiro for adjustments and used the acu for pain management. Now my healer said I absoutely must loose the weight to improve the back. The bone scan said it is healed, so now I can start exercising. I have been semi active for a year now, but I am sore. Hence the weight loss is important. I am not doing anything drastic in order to loose the weight, it will be the natural way. I did a triathalon before all this and I thought what a great motivator and this way I can focus on a tri instead of the weight. I am using Qi-Gong for strengthing thru a Dvd for over a year now it has helped but now I need more. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeannette--You are an amazing woman, too!! The swimming is excellent strengthening for those low back muscles. Just don't forget to stretch with yoga or those rollers that Sean recommended. Your muscles are likely in overprotective mode and always tight. I'd also add some massage therapy to your healing armament, but those stretches need to happen every day. I'm going to challenge you to stretch daily, and to support that, I'll do it, too. (Because I am very bad and haven't been doing it nearly enough) ![]() I swam a mile today. 1100 of it was with flippers, so it doesn't really count, but I just was having fun in the water and felt like tricking my mind into thinking a mile isn't so bad (cuz I just did it!). My kick is getting lots stronger and I don't have to rest as long between lengths/laps, so maybe, just maybe there's hope for me yet ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A tip--remember to drink plenty of water after a swim. It was cold in the water (at first) and cold outside after, so I went more for the hot coffee and got dehydrated. I felt all dizzy and funny and weak. So, I had to really get a bunch of water in and that helped almost within minutes. Oops. I drink plenty when I sweat, but in the water, I didn't notice it. Happy Friday the 13th!!!! It's my luckiest day. I was ornery this morning til I realized the date ![]() ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Better yet - go for the hot chocolate, and chase it with water - Hi, my name is Celia and I'm a chocoholic. However, it's now said that's good for you, which explains why I am such a cheerful and well-adjusted individual...lol. Sean & Malph - again, happy tri-ing tomorrow! I will run for you too if the weather breaks here - otherwise, with you in spirit! Happy Friday 13th, Phoe - you little nut! I love that remembering the date put you in a good mood - a much better superstition Happy weekend to everyone. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() One of my patients makes dark chocolate candies and gifted me with a bag for Easter! I was deliriously happy until my kids got into it. My fear is that the chocolate industry bribed the powers that be to publish the wonderful antioxidant effects of chocolate, only to find out it's really just a conspiracy and will give you cancer! Nah... Celia, I'm with ya, but I'm NOT doing a 12 step for it! It's the perfect PMS cure, too ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What's PMS - Post Munchy Sadness? |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've got some Post Munchy Sadness. Just had a huge thing of chinese food. Not sad because I ate it, but sad because I know I will be eating more all night lol.
I'm getting race-restless. I can't wait for my first tri. It's still 7 weeks away which feels like a lifetime. And this weather is depressing. The sun finally came out but its still so cold and windy. blah summer where are you?! |
|
![]() ![]() |
Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Choclate without a lot of sugar is ok, its the sugar that is white death or so I am told. Post munchy sadness is blood sugar drooping too fast. I am told to stick with fruits. Pene- What types of stretches do you reccomend? I am stretching legs but unsure how to stretch the back. Seven days, 10 hours, 9minutes, 8seconds, 7 milliseconds... try not to do a countdown. I know I sleep a little less the night before so make sure you get some decent sleep before the night before. You trained hard so give yourself some credit!!!! ![]() I will be at the Gym on Saturday!!!!! Go Team!!!!!!!! |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeanette--I would do the cat stretches--on hands and knees, arch your back like a cat hissing and then let your belly drop down and alternate these postures. I also recommend Steve Tarpinian's Yoga for Endurance Athletes CD. Not too difficult (except for the back bend that I can't do and probably won't even try to master) and leaves you feeling good. But, ask your chiropractor what he/she recommends first, because I don't know your whole history. Rob, I'm in a slump, too. Not exactly restless, just sick of snow and cold and not really having fun with this stuff these days. Of course, a total and complete lack of SEX does that!!! (sorry, I SWORE I wouldn't flirt with you any more. Bad Phoenix, bad, bad....sound of slapping hands). Last night I had restless dreams. I'm getting ready for an outdoor tri and it's raining and cold, so I'm dressing in layers. Which would be fine, except I can't get the tights pulled up all the way, and one sock keeps falling down into my shoe (hate it when that happens) and I look at the clock and realize I should have been there 15 minutes ago, and my bike isn't ready........ Oh, my! Well, at least I didn't start running and realize I'm naked! My kids sabotaged my little Malph/Sean tri efforts last night. They just wouldn't stop fighting, asking me questions on the treadmill, and otherwise being exceptionally needy. They've been showing the typical signs of stress post their dad's visit that they always go through. They cling, have screaming fits, lots of dreams and can't stop pestering me for attention for even one millisecond. My ex keeps calling and wants to "discuss what my concerns are about his visit in the park". He's starting to get it that he screwed up here big time. He's even got his parents calling. It's just more of the same old story and it wears me out FAR more than a marathon! Last night I was ready to give up ALL this stuff and just go back to doting on my kids and being nothing more than a chiropractor going through the motions and eating for fun. Go back to being a size 18 couch potato with a clean house for a change. Very respectable, very boring................NEVER!!!!! I think I'm just being tested ![]() What do you all do when you reach that point where you are being tested and want to quit??? I think I need a sponsor......and you all are my "meeting". Someone think of an opening prayer and pass the donation basket. I'll bring coffee and donuts ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chocolate doughnuts and I'm there - or, in deference to Jeannette - chocolate covered fruit? Seriously, sometimes you just gotta phone it in and be proud that you did it at all - power on through w/o thinking about it - make a list of all the great things you've accomplished - with your kids, your work, your training - focus on the things you have gotten done, instead of the things you still need to do or that are bugging you. Probably not much help - but we're all thinking positive thoughts to you! |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks C! Wish I was closer to you, too. You'd be a great training partner and say just the right little encouraging things, I'm sure ![]() Rob, there's actually an article about overcoming the "blah's"! Something about the three A's: acceptance, action and something else.....but the point is, everyone gets the blahs and then you just have to change your routine or power through it--or, like me, LISTEN to my body for a change! I'm realizing that I'm still very sick, not just dehydrated. Lately I don't pay any attention to my body because I'm in that mind over matter mode. So, yesterday I realized I was actually Hungry! And I even forget to go to the bathroom. I'm not kidding! I've just been turning it all off and powering through life. My lungs are really congested and that's why I'm dizzy and weak--no oxygen. I just plain need to rest, stay home, clean my house and pay attention to my kids. And that's okay for now. (but I hate it!) Superwoman doesn't sit home on the couch! You remind me of me. I think you just plow through life in super competitive mode, too. (it's a fire sign thing) Maybe you need to veg this weekend, too. Or maybe you are stressing about your job change? What's up with that, btw? Just sick of the night shift deal? Pass me that Chinese food--that sounds WAY good right now ![]() C--I may just have to make chocolate lava cake in your honor today! I'm not much of a Betty Crocker, so the cake just may ERUPT! (they thought Mt. Phoenix was inactive...........) I need another group hug ![]() ![]() Oooh, there's an article about Quadrathons!! It's super funny! I vote for the swim-bike-run-skate, because lately I've been thinking. I need clear, almost invisible flippers that no one will notice for the swim. I need rocket blasters on my bike that are super quiet and smokeless. And I need wheels on my running shoes that pop out when you need them! I'm a much faster skater than runner (or at least I used to be!) Or maybe the swim-bike-run-PUNCH? This boxer babe has a pretty good hook--I actually need to add more weights to my heavy bag stand! Do you all know something--I actually signed up for my first tri because I (mistakenly) thought that you could use flippers and a snorkle for the swim! Well----there was a thing on here advertising them for sale and I just assumed.........pretty funny, huh? |
