Any recommendations about how to deal with cramps? My swim tonight was nothing spectacular 10x50 10x100 1x50 I wanted to do 10 50's after the 100's but my left leg was locked up tight. I started having lots of cramping in my toes, foot, and calf about halfway through the 100's. I drank a bottle of water on the way to the pool, I drink water all day long, and I try not to push off of the walls. Any thoughts? Maybe electrolytes? My coaches always used to joke with us to eat some bananas and pickles when we would cramp in practice. Thats really the most common thing I can think of, other than just plain fatigue--were you pushing the 100's? Um... yeah... I'm not real big on the fruits and veggies. Maybe I'll try a Gu or sports drink next time instead of just water. I was pushing the 100's, but even that isn't very fast, yet. I generally take electrolytes in for supra 45min or high intensity workouts...I use GU sports drink...I like the taste...not too sweet/sour. I haven`t had any cramping issues for awhile. Gu Brew! That's what I use. I think it tastes MUCH better than Gatorade! I get it in the individual pouches. I even made some for the kids this winter when they were sick, they liked it too. Ya its pretty much the bestest! haha |

We always do a 45 minute run followed by an hour swim. I've been sipping on a sports drink after the run and during the swim ever since and haven't had any issues. |

So 6 miles in I hear a pop and realize one of the elastic bands holding my aerodrink bottle had snapped. Decided to keep going and about 6 miles later the other one snapped too. I tried to rig something up to keep it in place but couldn't so I drank what I could and pitched the bottle into a ditch. I am going to pick up some rubber bands and go back for it on my ride tomorrow if its still there. I decide to head back. 3 miles later: flat! I stop and change the tube. Turns out my new CO2/hand pump hybrid is a POS. I'm going back to my old pump. Got the tire back on, slightly underinflated and rode the last 9 miles home, into the 25mph wind. Good times! Time for dinner and a beer or 3. I'll be back later to catch up Oh man Neal! Talk about SUCKTASTIC! Have a beer on me! I'll pitch in one or six as well. Whatcha drinking, pal? I went with the ol standby Fat Tire tonight. It took just one beer to go from fuming to laughing. I can't believe I'm going to go ditch diving tomorrow to get my water bottle back |

I decided to try their pool tonight, since in my experience the Y is pretty crowded later in the evenings. IT WAS WONDERFUL! Nice big new locker room ALL TO MYSELF! New 8 lane 25 yard lap pool ALL TO MYSELF! The pool was nice. I wish I could have shared it will all of you. I know I wouldn't have been alone then, but I know you guys wouldn't have ruined the mojo. I think I'll be going there a lot more. Nice. What time are the Ghoulies swimming tomorrow? Oh, and Melindy will have her own workout. Perhaps it should be her rest day and she can coach the rest of us. Nothing too early I hope. I need my beauty sleep Coach Melindy has a nice ring to it don't you think? |

I don't like early early mornings anymore...5 yrs of 430am practices destroyed that...haha. I need my beauty sleep too :P Yes it does have a nice ring to it Neal! Haha...Makes me sound fearsome and knowledgeable...I think I can be pretty fearsome when I want to be...or so ppl tell me...and I'll just pretend it makes me knowledgeable! |

That sounds awesome - I need to check the local college here also to see how crowded it is - the Y is getting $$ and I don't use it all summer because of commuting! I've thought of stopping my Y membership for the summer. The kids aren't taking any classes, and the only thing I use it for now is the pool. I can take the kids to the college to swim. The only downside to the college pool is their limited hours. I'm not sure what I'll do yet. |

Champion 16743 Somewhere I can be nekidd | Subject: RE: Ghoulie March (STILL BIKING) Madness!!! wgraves7582 - 2010-03-31 8:12 AM Ann(e) - cramps reference. Many times I have read in here it is endurance level. You probably pushed it further/harder than in the past and that is why that happened. You will find varying opinions on the electrolyte/salts cause of cramps around here - just post a question about it and watch the fireworks But with that I add some salty snacks if I am going hard or long on a workout. I know my water consumption is good and endurance level is appropriate so that leaves nutrition as the key. I cannot remember the last time I took a GU or things along those lines but that is just me. I don't know if I said anything here - my mind is cluttered this morning! I know I've read about the endurance level thing before. I have gone that distance before, I did push it harder last night though. The cramps were in my left leg, and that's the one I hurt the other week. I was also wondering if maybe I wasn't babying it, or doing something different with that leg that caused the cramps. I did feel a little off balanced in the water last night, but not enough that I was concerned about it. |

Yes I need to verify that also but I could ride downtown and then go swimming before work which would be supremely awesome! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!! If I could swim before workd I'd do it. My best swims have been when in the morning. |

I think it would be more like biking than running, not as hard on the body, so I don't think you need to worry about the 10% rule as you train. |
