I found a picture of on Trixie's page from our tri on Sunday: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/index-weekly....

Look about 1/3 of the way down and it was us NEWBIES with the pro Trixie (although she didn't race since she is running a 100 mile race soon!

My wife and daughter took several pictures and I will try to learn to post them!

Be in touch soon,

It is so great to read these posts. It makes my day when I come home from work in the middle of the night!!!!

Dan and Leston.. I am so excited.... to see you guys so excited! I am really glad that you enjoed your races so much and you now have been bitten by the bug. BT is such a great community!

Sticka so great to hear about your family.

I envision all of you in your wetsuits, now you all get the sausage casing thing...isnt it great???

Bryan, I missed the cooking show , I turned it on a half hour too late

I am celebrating the big 50 on Saturday and I am going to swim in a race to celebrate. I know its weird ..but I really like OWS. I can choose either 1 mile or 3 miles. I think i'm going to do 1 so that I have something left for the rest of the day. I truely feel like this will be a way to celebrate my own fitness as well as turning 50.

The race is on Cape Cod and my family has a summer place there so I will celebrate with my kids, hub, parents and possibly 2 of my sisters. One of my sisters also has her birthday on the same day but we are a year apart. Were hoping that this all works out as we like to celebrate together.

BTW...has anyone been following my RED SOX??? they are still in first place. I have Sox yankee tickets the day before my next tri in July.. Doesnt get much better than that!!!

Bryan, thanks for the soap box. It is a great community, even family. I love it when people are encouraging to each other rather in something as difficult as this is.

Mav, you are a swimming machine. I hope that you have a great time on your Happy 50 Swim! I can see how you can get addicted to OWS. It is a blast, and (at least in the summer) lots more fun than a pool. There are two reservoirs within 20-30 minutes of my house. The first is where I have been swimming, and where the Tri was on Saturday. The only problem with that one is that it's a state park and you have to pay $6 to use it. The other one is free, and a bit closer. The problem with that one is...this is serious...there are some big scary fish that live there. Tiger Muskies. I know because I have fished it and seen them. They freakin' stalk the boat! They are like alligators. I had one on just this Monday that was at least 3 feet long. Sharp teeth. I would have to get pretty desperate to swim in that place. If they saw me swimming I'm sure they would concur with Mav's sausage comparison!

Speaking of sausages, Sticka you lookin good in your wetsuit! Haha, what a trip to do your first OWS! Sounds like you will be a pro in no time. I can't wait to get out there again in the open water, sun shining off the lake, floating like a cork, cruisin like a Muskie!

Leston so glad your liking the OWS. I went again tonite ...it was very relaxing. It reminds me of being a kid and swimming in the early evening....I love summer. Saw alot of different fish today, also saw a kite. It was just fun and relaxing.I love to look at all the cool plants too. I hate snakes so I dont hang around the edges. I would NOT like fish with big teeth either!!!! Going Fri with Kathy G from BT for a 2.5 mile swim. My longest ever!!!!

Saw the sports doc today...have a strained hamstring. Back to PT . Can swim and bike but no running.....at least thats what he has said for now. He said I should recover in a few weeks...but if I dont follow instructions it can be as long as 6 months( do you think I seem like the defiant type??) I did run earlier today because I knew he would say no running. I Just had to!!!

Hey Juanita...hows the job. Between work and work outs I am sure you are busy.

Bryan..I love when you get on your soap box!!!

I love it when you're on your soap box too, Bryan! Man, that post is awesome. I wonder if you have any idea how much you've helped me or how much you've encouraged me and made me believe in myself. You've made this sport fun and taken the pressure off by making me feel like I don't have to "perform" but just "enjoy." Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Dan? Did you read my posts after my first tri on the 24th? I had a pool swim for that tri, and I panicked. I can swim 2 miles without stopping when I workout at my gym. I've been swimming like that for almost a year! And I still freaked! My second tri (OWS) was night and day different. I'm so proud of you! I think you had  GREAT PERFORMANCE!

Love the pics, Leston! Awesome! I'm so glad you posted those! And Peter, you cracked me up with the "4th event", ROFL! Great pics too!

I'm the only one without a sausage casing! *SOB!*

Happy early Birthday Marianne! I just celebrated my birthday last week! WOW. I was 53 on June 19. My awesome son drove down from Auburn for the weekend to surprise me. *ear to ear smile* I love the way you're celebrating yours! And hey, take care of that hammy!

Actually, I don't start work until Monday. But I had my physical this week, and have an appointment tomorrow to take care of paper work. I went to the gym Monday and cancelled my cancellation. That was fun. Feels SO good to know I can keep on swimming!

Keep on sTRIving, all! You guys ROCK!

Good morning fellow sTRIvers,

Early start for me as I'm on the road to Saint John (about 90 minutes from Fredericton) for work today.

Did my second OWS last evening and it was really encouraging. Felt way more comfortable in the water. I estimate that I swam about 1/2 the distance that I will have to do on the day and it was no problem. I went to the place where we will exit the water and it is a little tricky - combination of mud and big rocks on the bottom so footing isn't great. Then the path to the bike rack area is fine gravel - I wonder if people will leave flip-flops at the water exit to slip on for the run to T1?

One thing that I'm finding is that the buoyancy from the wet suit causes me to not think so much about kicking since my legs and butt don't automatically sink like they do in the pool. I found last night that at times I was barely kicking at all - I assume this isn't good so I'll have to remember to kick!

Did a little better on sighting but I see now exactly why people can swim way off course and not know it. My solution is to do a few strokes of breast stroke every so often.

Have a great day everyone. Happy belated birthday flipper and happy birthday in advance mav !!

Happy birthday to both our girls!!!  Flipper you didn't think you could get that past us did you?  Mav.....you look MAV E LOUS!!!!  Enjoy the swim....wow....

Sounds like everyone is doing well....

Sticka - some will leave flip flops but most will probably just go for it...at least that's what they do here....the race may put a rack on the mud or some astroturf to help.

I would not swim with alligator teethed fishes of any size...if they are man eating....and not scared of me....that's why the snakes didn't bother me much...I knew they were scared of me...

If the food network show is on again and I see it on the schedule I will let you know...they run it for a while....

That's exactly how I described myself to the two ladies (each of whom was WOTHP - Well Over Two Hundred Pounds and munching away on burgers and fries)  who were sitting  on a bench nearby. I said I now know what a bratwurst feels like just before it goes on the grill.

My daughter Stef (who was also my rescue 911 backup) took the pics.

Just about to hit the road to the cottage. Runners, wetsuit and bike all coming with me too.

Away with the family this weekend and brought my bike so I'm hoping to get a nice long ride in today. No swim though .

Happy Birthday MAV and Juanita! I am catching you in age!!!!

Juanita, good luck on your first day at work on Monday and MAV, please don't drown on your 50th!

It has rained here almost everyday for the last 3 weeks and it has been hard to get outside for training (I am not yet one of those train regardless of the weather nuts like some of you!). I am still getting in my training time, just not outdoors.

Anyway have a GREAT week for all Turtles. I think of this group often. You are great motivation.

Thanks,

Thank you all for your birthday wishes...it is great to be 50. Well this morning I did my mile OWS. I finished in 36:40 which was a little slower than I had hoped by I just kept a steady pace. My hamstring causes my foot to cramp if I try to sprint and it was important for me to finish. I actually came in second for my AG. ...there were ony 4 in the 50-55 group and 2 people DNF'd. Hardware is hardware!!! Guess there aren't too many 50 year olds who swim a mileLOL No running for two weeks for me. Kinda sucks but I can use the elliptical. PT killed me yesterday... I promise to listen ...this is not a fun injury. I need to be running by 7/27 as I have the Danskin. My goal is to be in the top 10 for my AG. That race has 2500 women...yikes!

Juanita, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!!!!!! Hope you had a great day!

I am off to do a long easy bike ride on the rail trail. It passes many beaches.I plan on finishing on the local pond and go for a nice swim at the end. The Cape is a beautiful place.

Road two hours this morning and finished with a mile run....it was actually a great workout.  This week, let's all try to squeeze a touch more distance out of our long swim....do an extra 50 or 100 at the end prior to stopping...I know you can do it.

I have risen eary to the occasion...swam 40 mins OWS in a beautiful lake on cape cod. I was only going to do 30 mins but remembered your challenge Bryan!Saw LOTS of fish, a sunken boat and beautiful rays of light in the water.I went at 7:00 am so I had the entire lake to myself along with 4 fishermen. I had my trusty noodle and swam with my bright green bathing cap so the boats could see me. It is a very peaceful workout...especially because there was no need for a sausage casing!!!

Off to bike... going from Chatham to Wellfleet today which is about half the length of Cape Cod

Enjoy the day felloe turtles!!!

All Finish Lines count....I will update.

Did a long run with some intervals today....you all might try this sometime....it was pretty cool....okay it was tough but it was different.  Start your run with a warm up.  After warm-up, nice easy jog for 4 minutes (zone 1 for you fellow HR zone guys and gals), then kick to zone 3 or just below breathless pace for four minutes, then kick it up a notch to breathless pace for two minutes (this is not a sprint, just a zone 4 pace which is the pace where you are feeling the beginning of muscle burn and you can only get out one to two word communications, breathing is labored.  Then repeat 6 times for a nice 60 minute run, then cool down - if you are doing 30 minutes, then only do three times....smile.  MAV - YOU MAY NOT DO THIS AT ALL.....until released from medical care....

I am going to try this on the bike this week too just for fun....it is something different to do and helps focus the mind on something other than the run.

Have a great turtle week,

By the way, some body cues for the run interval above...

First 4 minutes of the interval, you should be able to talk pretty easily during this part.

Second 4 minutes, a 5-7 word sentence is okay but you want to breathe after that, you feel like you can run this pace for a long time, but you will need to focus on form and breathing to keep it going.

Then the 2 minutes, muscle burn, one or two word communication is about all she wrote....

Try it and let me know what you think...

I am off to "Up North" (as we lower Michigander call it). I am bringing my bike, wet suit and running shoes. I plan on training often - GREAT Hills in the area I am going. I am going to have to increase my running and Bryan, I may try your suggestion (only my HR monitor has been sent in to get new batteries, so I won't have it for this trip :^( ....

I think I mentioned this, but I have signed up for my next Tri on July 12th: 1/2 mile swim; 11 Mile bike and 3 mile run (done in the old fashion English system!). I will be very interested to see how I react to the longer swim....

Here are the results of my first Tri: http://www.3disciplines.com/index2.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_v... I finished 167th of the 240 people who entered and 6 of 10 in my age group.

I will be back on Monday. We don't have access while I am gone, so keep up the good work and I will "catch-up" on my reading when I return!!!!!

Thanks B-Man for the Canada Day best wishes. We got home from our cottage in time to go to the fireworks last night and they were great. I'll be thinking of y'all on the 4th of July!!

Well, I'm into the final countdown now - 4 days to go !! Although I was quite nervous last week, I'm starting to get less nervous and more excited now. Let's get this party started!!

Had a great 4-day weekend at the cottage. Managed to get in 3 good 20k bike rides and a  single 5k run. Also practised a couple of transition skills - running in my cycling shoes, getting on and clipping in, clipping out and dismounting, etc. This week I want to get one more OWS at the race site and at least one more run.

Sticka I am so excited for you.
Swim Pete swim!!!!
Bike Pete bike!!!!
Run fast Pete run!!!!
I know you will have so much fun. As for the garmin, I dont use one. I know many people use HR monitors during tri's but I do not. As for the GPS portion, the course are usually very well marked. There are usually volunteers or police at major intersections and turns so you should have no problem. If you havent already biked and run the course try and do so over the next few days. You should not workout the day before the race. I dont know if you have followed a training plan, but most say rest the day before the race. Most of all dont forget to file your race report!!!!!!! We will all be with you at the finish line!

Today I swam 2.5 miles!!!WOOO HOOO. I have been ows with a women from this web site who is training for ironman Lake placcid. She does not like to swim...so we have been doing it together. This was my longest ever OWS. My shoulders are tired. We are planning on doing a relay Iron Man in Plymouth Ma the end of August. I will be the swimmer. It is an ocean swim ( I have never done that before) there is a first time for everthing!!!!

Juanita...where are you??? Are they making you work all the time???

Happy 4Th of July to all!!!!!I will be delivering the holiday babies while everyone is watching the fireworks!!!
