Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Up to you what you want to do at the water stations. You can stop and refill - especially if you have one of those bottles on your aerobars. Or, you can toss your water bottle and then you don't have to stop - just slow down and grab a sportsbottle drink which fits in your bottle holder. I bring old bottles that I don't care about leaving behind. |

I like the idea of just loading a couple of poland spring bottles for the back cages. I have an aerodrink that I'll fill with something like Gatorade Endurance or Heed. Anyone try FRS? I've tried FRS, but dont think it's intended for fuel for endurance events. Plus there is some caffeine in there which you may or may not want. I use amino vital endurance in my poland spring bottles, alng with two caplets of salts (dissolved/mixed). I add to this powerbar gel blasts for more calories/carbs. I'll refill my aerobotle using this mix. (In fact - RAD if you look back thru this forum there is a detailed post about my nutrition plan FWIW I'm 41, 5'11 and 158 - and try to get 300-350 cal/hr on the bike. On another note - From reading the bike elevation - looks like about 1800 ft of climbs - is that about right? I did the Rev3 Quassy half in June which had over 4000 ft of hills so hopefully this ride will be faster |

New user 74 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I ride with an aero bottle up front with water, then a gatorade on the down tube. I take my nutrition in via gels and some gatorade. At each stop, I grab a water and refill my aero bottle. The gatorade usually lasts me the whole ride. Like others that mentioned, stop off and get 1 liter bottles of water and test them out, that way you aren't tossing nice water bottles. |

Veteran 139 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Hey all - welcome Rad70! Sounds like folks have solid nutrition plans going into the race. Thanks all for sharing there's some very useful stuff in there. As this is my first HIM it's going to be a little bit of trial and error which I admit makes me nervous. I don't want to feel bloated at the start of the race, so I'll be balancing liquid and solid intake as best I can. I'll have 2 bottles of Infinit ~400 cal and 1 bottle of water on the bike, as well as Cliff Bars and Gu, and some salt sticks as I sweat so much. I'm aiming for 350-400 cal per hour, and will be following some of the Coach Gordo advice on planning the race. Above all I'm looking to avoid bonking on the run so the bike refueling will be important. Like Sam said, I'll eat when I'm hungry and drink when I'm thirsty and aim to arrive on the run with enough inside me to keep the motor running. I'm starting to get excited now as race time approaches. I've a Sprint in Asbury Park NJ this Saturday and a 25 K run on Sunday, as well as a long ride to squeeze in this week so it will be interesting to see how the body holds up! What do you folks have planned for your penultimate weekend of training? Cheers, S |

My buddy, who did Quassy this year and Lake Placid twice said that REV3 has nearly as much climbing in 56 miles as LP has has in 112. And the Quassy run sounds like it's absolutely brutal, nothing but hills especially on the last 5K. The Timberman run is actually pretty flat, the profile shows four little climbs but having done the sprint last year (which included the first and 3rd 'climbs' of the two-loop HIM run) I can say I don't remember a climb at all...slight uphill portion? Sure, but it's a pretty flat and decently shaded course. One thing to remember with the bike: 95% of the climbing is in the first and last 10 miles, plus the false flat after the turnaround. It makes it a little more challenging since it's not spaced out and the last 10 miles won't feel good, just make sure to save some gas for that last half hour of the bike! |

Master 1927 Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread At this point for me, what's there is there for the most part. I'm just fine tuning now and visualizing the race during my rides/runs and thinking about pacing efforts and such. I probably had one of my last bigger brick workouts last Sunday but will still have a few 50-70 mile rides at an easy effort and a couple 8-14 mile runs I think. I'll really start scaling back towards the middle of next week and next weekend will be lighter and probably will only ride about 40 nice and easy and nothing over an 8 mile run at an easy effort. Then just stay loose the week of the race. |

Veteran 229 New York | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread We've got 3 weeks left too, and one of those days (Saturday) at several peoples suggestion is riding the bike course. I'm excited to finally go see it, even if part of it will really suck, because then I'll know what I'm in for. And has anyone done the meal on the 20th? Is it worth it? Do the big names come to this, or only the one on the 22nd? We're doing that one for sure. |

Just got a disk cover for my rear wheel, so psyched to take it on the road. New aero helmet broken in last weekend and now the disk cover...I have another race sim on Saturday (2.5 hr. ride at just under race pace, 40 min brick run at race pace), I can't wait to see how things go with the new toys! Master 1927 Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Nice looking ride! I think you should go super deep in the front with a 1080 or something I heard they make a cool sound! do it, you know you want to I'm contemplating what I should do about wheels right now. I have Bontrager Aeolus 5.0 ACC wheels that are 50mm (in between zipp 303 and 404 depth). They are great for training but I always want something deeper for a race. I rented a disc and 808 for RI 70.3 and it was alright but I hated the tires on them. I like to run my tire tube combo so would need to switch it out on a rental. I've contemplated doing the wheelbuilder disc cover though. Any idea on how long it takes for them to turn one of those around and get it to you? It might be worth it and then I just need a front wheel.... You guys ready! I'm feeling almost race ready. Getting a little pumped up. Would like to lose about 3-5 lbs if possible and stay super fresh. Keep the legs springy headed into the week of the race. Let's do this thing!...sorry...3rd cup of coffee today |

Extreme Veteran 475 Watertown, MA | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread The rear wheel is a disc cover from wheelbuilder with a Felt TTR2 wheel/Michelin pro3 race tire (which I LOVE). Turnaround was super-fast, I put the order in on the 27th (last Tuesday) and got it on the 3rd (Tuesday)--they shipped it the day I put the order in, actually. I've also heard their customer service, if you need it, is phenomenal. Just make sure to read about any wheels/frames that don't work with their covers, there aren't many but it'd suck to get one only for it not to work. I'd LOVE to get a deep front but that's gonna wait until next year. This season the big purchase was the bike, next year I think I'm upgrade to an 808/sub 9 disk combo. I love TOYS! Definitely feeling ready...the past few days I've felt AWFUL--the crash and a hard race really did me in. But my coach basically told me to take some time to heal up and I feel awesome right now, can't wait for my intervals tonight. 17 days and counting! |

Extreme Veteran 475 Watertown, MA | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Oh, one other thing re: disc covers - I keep hearing that they're 90% as effective as the 2K disks out there, I think if given the option you're much better off getting a cover than running a 50mm rim. Also, make sure if you do get the cover to use electrical tape around the entire thing, it seals it up completely so it responds much more like a disk. It won't be making the fancy sounds of a disk, but it'll be going damn fast! |

I'm asking because if I could work it out to get a ride TO the race site at the butt-crack of dawn from our hotel with everyone else on race day and allow my family to sleep longer, that would be fantastic. |

Is there any interest in meeting Thursday, Friday, or Saturday before the race? I'm not sure how this will look or where...I'm just starting putting it out there so we can start the conversation. I will have my full crew (Wife Maggie and four kids ages 2 to 11). Right now I don't have tickets or plans to attend the "official" eating opportunities. It can get expensive with the whole crew, etc. Anyway...thoughts? |

15 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread After viewing this thready from the sidelines for 9+ months now, I figured why not chime in. It's been great following everyone's ups and downs along this journey. I too am quite excited about this race since it is my first HIM, I signed up for it on the first day registration opened, I have been training more and racing less, and I am in the best shape of my life. Each day my mind seems to spend more time thinking about Timberman than anything else. Not obsessively, just excitedly. For those wondering about the Gatorade Endurance on the course, that is indeed what will be offered according to an email I received after I asked about this since IM had branded its own drink. Good thing since I have been using it so much in this humid, humid NJ summer. I still have one more long ride (80 miles) and one more long run (14 miles) before a two-week taper begins, even though my first week taper ends with a 60 mile ride and 12 mile run. Keep up the hard work everyone. It will payoff on August 22. |

If you can't find anyone else to help you out, though, I don't mind the extra trip, it looks like it's about 20-30 minutes round trip for me. I doubt I'll be sleeping much on Saturday night / Sunday morning anyway! Is there any interest in meeting Thursday, Friday or Saturday before the race? Definitely...it'd just be me, myself and I but I'll be at my parents place on Thursday with nothing but nerves and a little training to keep me busy, I'd love to have a pre-race get-together with all my fellow Timberman BT'ers! |

I don't want to inconvenience anyone. Everyone: As getting together. I don't know the area...being from MI and all. The SOONEST I think I will be available is Thursday toward early evening. I still have to go over what my wife's thoughts are on what she wants to do, but I've already mentioned that I would like to get together with the BT'ers. Any suggestions on where to meet? A place to eat, etc. |
