wmcgee62 - 2010-04-27 12:28 PM Hello everyone
I have a bunch of questions to ask all the mentors but would like anyone that wants to go ahead and answer.

1.Did you have a an athletic background before starting this sport? If so what was it?
My answer is yes I was a boxer and a weight lifter

2. What attracted you to this sport?
The every day in and day out intestinal fortitude it takes to do the sport. The real super heros

3. What do you like about the lifestyle?  Dislike?
Like: pushing the limits and finding me.  Dislike: the same as the like(if that makes any sense) and the disconnect from others when they see you going for something that one they cant/ don't believe they/you  should even try it.

4. What motivates you right now?
weight loss and doing the Half Ironman

5. Is there anything you would have like to learn earlier?
     The cost

1.Did you have a an athletic background before starting this sport? If so what was it?
Not really. 20 years ago it was nothing to jump on my bike and go 30-40 miles, but I never raced, just rode.

2. What attracted you to this sport?
I wanted to lose weight and I couldn't workout for the sake of working out. Someone I worked with talked me into trying a tri.

3. What do you like about the lifestyle?  Dislike?
Like: pushing the limits and finding me.  Dislike: the people who have no idea about what it is that I do and then are unsupportive or negative

4. What motivates you right now?
I want to lose a little more weight. I also have arthritis in my spine and spinal stenosis. There will come a day when I can't do this anymore, today isn't that day.

5. Is there anything you would have like to learn earlier?
How to swim better, and that I love to run.

IN My life l have learned to do the things that I have passion for.  Life can be over in a moment so why not be doing the things you are passionate about. Some day if I make it to retirement and sitting on the porch and reflecting . I want to say I did all of this rather than wish that I had.

If anyone's looking for a cool half-full early fall, there's a very cool new race in the DC area 1st weekend in October, with all proceeds benefitting young adults with cancer (Ulman Cancer Fund) - http://www.halffulltri.org/.For my sprint tri's, I'm racing with the UCF's Team Fight, and will be doing the swim leg in a relay for the Half-Full.

Wes - Is it REALLY expensive to paint a motorcycle helmet?

When I got my new bike last year I was going to get my helmet painted the same color. I got a quote of $250 to get it painted. I can buy a new helmet for that.

Thank you. We all have to deal with it sometime in our lives. Whether its ours or someone we love, so lets live while we are alive.  (just a side note I lived in Springfield when she passed)

Seems high but not crazy unreasonable.  Remember that the helmet has to be taken apart and scuffed/lightly sanded, adhesion promoter  and painted then clear coated  and buffed/polished out

For that much money I can live with my helmet not matching my bike.

That is what I would have done. I worked at a T-shirt short for a while and realized I never wanted to be an airbrush artist again. Still good friends with the owner. I want to get a cool design with TRIATHLETE theme and have him make 20 or so.

Sorry for my absence over the last week.  Between work and personal stuff, it was a crazy one.  I think it's all back under control now so I can resume posting my inanities along with your nuggets of wisdom (and occasional nuggets of other stuff...).

I did want to thank everyone for responding to my motivation question a while back.  It seems like I am on the right path to dealing with those days where getting out the door is the last thing I want to do.  Now I just have to apply the techniques you shared more consistently!

I'm going through old threads I missed so prepare yourself for some catch-up posting spam.

First of all, I need to name my new bike.  I'm leaning towards calling her Tempy because she's so tempermental compared to my mountain bike, which I always called Ole Reliable because she was always there for me.  She creaks under my weight, she tries to throw me if I don't unclip properly, and she's the equivalent of a thoroughbread living life on an old horse farm with me at the moment.

And no, I have no idea why I have given my bikes all a female gender.

ransick - 2010-04-21 11:34 PM 2-3 miles just go, I did 5 in the morning with no breakfast training for my half with no problem, your mileage may vary :-).  You should have plenty of energy from dinner (don't skip dinner).  The best thing about morning runs for me is re-fueling with chocolate milk when I return.  I have a new found love for it in my fourties because it is a good recovery drink.

For me, I need to wait an hour or more after eating even a light meal before I run and I'm not a morning person.

Yep, this ^ ^ ^ ^

Even my Sunday mornings when I've been going 13 I only have a light breakfast early and a Gu before I head out.

This was a great discussion - thanks for asking the question!  I struggled with this for a long time (and even missed some workouts) because I certainly don't want to eat two breakfasts, but my body won't let me get very far without anything (hazzard of being a big guy, I guess).  I have found that just half a powerbar or something similar is enough to hold me until I am done with my workout and can eat my "real" breakfast.
