Back pain yesterday and today (not the good kind). Trying to decide what to do today besides stretches. Maybe a light recovery swim instead of the planned bike. Lots of breast stroke, no heavy exertion in my crawl (especially the twisting, which can make the back worse). Swim is usually good for the back, and then perhaps I can bike tomorrow.

Massage tomorrow, had appointment a month ago, that should be good!!!

I'm making a rule that Melanie can't talk about her pushups anymore.  It's making the rest of us look really bad.  Or at least me.

Seriously though...great job.  I tried to do the whole 100 pushup thing back in college.  I think I gave up once I got into the 70 range.  I doubt I can do 50 good ones now.

I was surprised how many push ups I could do the last time I tried.  I got to 40 before things got ugly, then the last five were just plain nasty looking.  I made it to 50 but I am sure they weren't qualifying as military style for those last 10.  that has been several months ago and I think that all the swimming helps with arm strength, at least somewhat.  I will get to put some push ups on display at church this weekend.  One of the teens challenged me to do the difference in the score between the Packers and the Steelers.  He had the Packers and my team is the Steelers.........I have some push ups to do.  I usally never bet for or against my team but I thought this would work out ok and be kind of fun for him.  Oh yeah, I have to do these in front of the entire congregation at the beginning of service.

Prince of Denmar - 2011-02-06 5:09 PM 5k is in the books. short RR here
not the best race, but not that bad either.
short RR here

weather was alright. sunny but cold. quite cold.
course was hilly and longer than 5k. I thought so and it was confirmed by friends who won their AG and had a good race but whose times were over a minute slower than usual. (sub 18min guys)
oh well, shouldn't be making excuses.

off we went. first km in around 4:45 I think. hanging in behind the FOP but then my shoelace untied and with my hands cold as they were I couldn't tie it back! frustrating on such a short race as this. off I went again but I made the biggest mistake. I grabbed water. I almost never do in 5ks but I did and it was freezing COLD. hot body+ cold water..not good.
after that I never could grab a decent rhythm  and started lagging.  I kinda lost my motivation and willingness to suffer after that. I didn't start my watch at the start so I didn't know my splits. I knew I was running under 5min km though.

near the finish I let a chick 'chick' me because she seemed to be trying so hard to. talked to her for a while, nice chick. :P

fun race all in all. not too bad.

ETA: ha! time was 24:15. I think. no chip time so I haven't checked.

Nice job on the 5k!  Oh yeah, no complaints on the cold buster!  I have the next couple of days to work in -5F temps with -15F to -20F wind chills to deal with.

I am more than likely running a 5k on Saturday afternoon.  Trouble is I am not going to give up my 9 mile long run on Friday, so I am not sure how I will do.  The course is flat so I should PR because my last 5k race was on a very hilly course.  Last April I was training for a HM and I had a 10 mile run scheduled so I ran the 5k course backward then ran the race and ran a 4 mile CD.  I really don't want to do that again but it wasn't too bad, especially since I had a huge PR.

Got my goals for the season. Two sprint tris:
Triangle Triathlon on Sunday, July 10, 2011
Lake Mayo Triathlon on Saturday Aug 13, 2011

Aiming low, hope to do Olympic distance next year, and then perhaps half IM in two or three years.

Tripopo - 2011-02-08 9:04 AM Mel-  How has that program been working for you, I did great the first several weeks but then started hitting roadblocks and had to do several of the same workouts to get them as Rx?

I actually weight train 3x a week but I need to for the PTT tests, I think it is more of why you are doing the training in the first place, if you are not in the best of shape some weights would help add muscle mass and help with fat loss with a higher resting metabolism but you don't need to look like the hulk look into death by body weight.

My big goal this week is to get my workouts in before the weekend since we are going out of town.

The hundred pushups?  I can't complain.  I did it last year and started at about 10 girlie puships and within about 2 months I was doing 5 sets of 25 REAL pushups.  Fell away from it and started back up about 3 weeks ago.  On my initial test I could still do 25 in a row of real ones.

Wow remind me not to challenge Mel at a pushup contest! I have never heard of the 100 pushups thing, do you try and do 100 in a row?

The push ups are all done consecutively but there is a 6 week training period to get to the 100 max.  They also have other max type workout ideas as well.

Here's the link: http://hundredpushups.com/index.html

I may give it a shot just to see if I can stick with it but I am not really excited about it.  They have 25 and 50 pull up training plans as well.  I can't even imagine 50 pull ups.

doesn't really belong here but.... I had a gig cancelled for tomorrow night. it was a 50s style big band and I was going to fill up the 4th trumpet chair. playing with some of the best guys in town.
was really looking forward to this as I probably won't have another chance like this in a while.    guess I'll run tomorrow night then..

Work has been a bit rough the last few days so sorry haven't been on but I had a question about heart rates and heart rate training, how do you determine your zones, how much "stock" to put in it etc.  any advice or location to go to learn would be helpful

I'm not too much into HR training, but there are specific tests to find your zones.  Keep in mind that there are different tests for the bike and run...and your zones will be different for each.

Try searching for Lactate threshold HR tests and I'm sure you'll find something.

BT has a heart rate calculator, go to settings, then training settings, then manage heart rates. You can figure up your different training zones for all three sports. I use a heart rate monitor but I don't always keep it in certain zones. If I feel good at a higher zone I usually keep it there.

Ok, I am on a venting rage right now.

I have taken a week off from swimming and my shoulder hasn't had a break.  I have had snow to shovel and other things at work that have caused a bit more stress to my shoulder than I was looking to allow this week.  I am sure now I have a good muscle strain and it needs some rest but it's not going to get better if I can't rest it the way it needs rested.  The mental irritation seems to be growing and i am tempted to get in the pool anyway.  I think the strain was caused while shoveling snow a couple of weeks ago and not from swimming like I had thought might have been the case.

I can't stand knowing that I am missing swim workouts!  I was making some decent progress to make some speed gains over this winter and I was looking to get my 500 TT to 7:00 or less by May.  Now I am not sure what's going to happen???

This is dumb!!

Rage is over!............Maybe???

I would only swim if it doesn't hurt while you are swimming. If it hurts I wouldn't swim, and I know that sucks. I am one that doesn't like to take any time off so I feel for you.

Sorry to hear about the shoulder Dirk.

But there's always two sides to a coin.  Maybe work on your running in the mean time.

I was pretty bummed when I crashed last year and hurt my shoulder and couldn't swim.  As you remember I turned to a full bike focus instead and am glad I did.  Sure I missed out on some swimming races I had planned to do...but my biking got so much better.

This week sucked for me as well, recently got promoted and put in charge of a squad unfortunately it's the problem squad so have been having to deal with issues relating to that all week meaning I've been getting out almost an hour late all week, also plan on going away for the weekend with the wife so I tried to get all my workouts done in a 4 day span...  yeah not so much had to cut short my ride last night since the gym was closing and didn't make it back for opening for the swim I had planned...  but it happens have to be flexible I suppose.

On a different note my knees are feeling odd on my rides, not painfull but like there is a pressure right behind the front of my knee/knee cap only when I am riding on the exercise bike, not at work at all, and doesn't stay with me afterwards for the most part any ideas?
