I'm really pleased with my swimming. When I remember my first sprint tri, where I had to alternate lengths freestyle and breast stroke because I couldn't maintain my freestyle stroke without getting too out of breath, it's almost unbelievable the distances I can swim now. And I'm really pleased with the time. It reminds me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKs0oEIVOckSo Ernesto, how you doing on this dimension?
I'm not really worried about the day to day weight but more about what I'm eating. I've noticed in the past that the weight is actually about two weeks behind your eating (for both good and bad). The other thing is that I'm in a little transitional period where my body is switching from carbs to fats so no results yet. I know there will be though. I'm staying faithful to my diet. One important note to those that are doing low carbs diets, FUEL DURING YOUR WORKOUTS. That is the one chance where fueling with fast sugars will have zero impact on your weight loss/gains. On the other hand if you don't, you're risking to bonk badly, maybe even with some high consequences. Keep your HR low while you're on the diet and do no speedwork at all. I learned this the hard way, I'll find the link to a bike ride that I did while on such type of diet, with nothing but water. BAD IDEA. Since I've just started my training schedule for the Bridge Run, I'm not totally cutting out carbs. I can't miss my speedwork and strength training at this point. I am however watching when I eat the foods. Simple sugars right before the workouts with protien and carbs right after. |

Since they closed the pool that has been used both USA Swimming and USA Triathlon are out of a pool. From my understanding they are all over the Mayor since this happened on his watch to an Olympic training city. I will most likely meet with her next week and begin dry land drills. My pool will open in 2.5 weeks but she cannot gain access to it because it's on the Academy. Waiting for the sun so I can head out and do my hill training... |

The temp seemed as though it would have been nice but I didn't account for the frigid wind!!! The 44 degrees froze my hands. By the time the discomfort and pain set in I was at the top of the hill and the winds picked up. Winds steady around 13mph but the gusts were brutal as they rolled over the hill. Winds are always higher here than what the forecast reads. I bumped the watched and it started timing again so I corrected time. Lap 10 shows a slower pace uphill because My hands were so cold I couldn't press the button. It is supposed to snow tomorrow night and Sunday so Scott and I will rearrange our weekend schedule to account for the weather. I am assuming it also records you cadence outside when there is GPS signal? Mark. I do not have a footpod. I do have a cadence sensor on my bike and the heartstrap. If I get the footpad, I will have maxed out my Garmin! It would seem to me that a footpod would be useful only for cadence. On the treadmill, you know the distance. It tells you. Same with running around an indoor track. There is usually a sign that tells you how many laps to a mile. But cadence is important. You really should, at pace runs, being doing at least 180 foot falls per minute. (This is the same as a 90 cadence on the bike). But I think there is an easier way to achieve this than with a garmin - an iPod. You just put a 180 beats per minute song on the playlist and run to it. Turning Japenese by The Vapors is perfect. Also Modern Love: David Bowie Dancing with Myself: Billy Idol Karma Chameleon: Culture Club Mrs. Robinson: Simon and Garfunkel Rock Lobster: B-52's (although that has a few parts where beat stops). |

I am assuming it also records you cadence outside when there is GPS signal? Mark. I ordered the footpod. It does cadence and pace. Yes, GPS gives you pace but it can be erratic. I plan on using the GPS for distance but footpod for pace. The new Garmin footpod is incredibly accurate. Also, if running and you lose GPS the footpod will kick in and do distance as well. Important for me because one of my annual races goes through the tunnel under the Detroit River. I agree with the ipod and music. I'm still struggling with all these things but Chris mentioned those songs on the last forum and I loaded them. There is another web site that I love.. It is You can put in the pace or the beats you are wanting and it brings up songs. It is targeted for you to purchase them but if you have other ways of downloading the music you can. It is just nice to have more of personal music and run to your own genre. |

It is just nice to have more of personal music and run to your own genre. I run to music. I've got a load of stuff downloaded from audiofuel, which has really improved my running. I also have a wetronome, which is designed for use in water, but can be used anywhere. It's less fun to listen to (it just beeps), but probably the most accurate option. I find particularly when I'm running that I don't like having to continuously look at my garmin to check my stats (it's why I use the alerts for HR). I like listening to music because you get into a groove and just go with it without really having to think about it. |

Veteran 452![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Colorado Springs | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSEDI also have a question however. Trying to keep easy days easy and hard days hard. Scott and I are training for our 10k. It is an A Race for us because Scott has ran this race every year since 1988. I ran it for the first time two years ago.. (prior to that and the new bridge construction I wouldn't even drive over it without a complete panic attack). It's back home so it's a big deal. Here's a link so you can understand the importance. http://bridgerun.com/about.php "There were 34,690 people who finished the 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) course from Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston." that was in 2011 For training on my hard days, I've found that 2 hours after the workout I question if I went hard enough. Did the hills at 10am and now doing housework and things at home. I'm not exhausted, nor feel as though I have to just lay here and rest. SO.. Is that normal? I am realizing with different things I am still unaware of how hard to push. I'm afraid to go to hard and blow up or bonk, but at the end of workouts or races I am left uncertain. Does know this just come with time? I'm asking because I really want to push myself for April race. I took 6 minutes off last year and would love to drop another 4-6minutes |

I in no way said that "in those words". Actually I like those songs and when I don't have my ipod I just sing the song "Turning Japanese" in my head. But Scott likes heavy metal, especially Metallica and I can only listen to so much. Although it does motivate me and push me I just don't like the screaming in my head. Likewise, he's not fond on my 80's flash backs and other that I like. |

Master 2238![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dallas | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (third season) - CLOSEDThe footpod is ok but it only records your cadence, it doesn't tell you how fast to go. If you run with music, then find songs that have a beat 180 or higher, if you run without music, ebay has some clip on metronomes for $6 that you can put on your visor/hat or t-shirt and the frequency is adjustable. I trained for Ironman Texas entirely based on a high cadence for both bike and run (186 RPM/SPM) and heart rate not exceeding 143BPM (that's my magic number). The benefits of a high cadence are incredible, one of the biggest is the reduced risk of injury while running because the short strides are less pounding to joints and connective tissue. The other big one is running economy, I used to think that longer strides meant more distance therefore faster, WRONG. Taking long strides at a low cadence 130 or 140SPM (try it) elevates your HR immediately. |

I use my Garmin footpod mainly for my outdoor runs to measure cadence (I'm always around 83 steps per minute) as fortunately, I don't have to do too many workouts indoors. However, I'm kicking myself for not having it with me during the Chicago Marathon, since we went through long tunnels at the beginning of the race and my Garmin set me back about 3 minutes from the start (I had it set on auto pause, and it just paused when it lost reception, which would not had happened with the footpod). It has been a nice to have when training on a treadmill, because then you can upload your workouts from your Garmin to Garmin Connect and the BT site. |
