Dang it!  This week was a bust...totally ill all week other than Monday.  Dragged my butt to work then every night came home and hit the sack within minutes of walking through the door.  Feeling much better today I think I was have So Cal withdrawals and getting used to altitude again...my husband does not think so...whatever!

Working late again today but will hit the training hard this weekend.  I feel like such a slacker! Ugh!

My first tri of the year is in April, Napa Valley Sprint.  Its pretty low key and will be a great race to determine my fitness level for the beginning of the season.

Whoa there!  You just missed a 100 miles, for the week mind you, and you are wondering why you are not drivin????? what are you some kinda spaz?  I would be happy to get 20 miles in a week.  If it ain't broke don't fix it...if you are happy allow yourself to be happy. Also, maybe you are just remembering the driven times during your college years.  I am sure there were ebbs and flows just as they are now.

Don't get too deep there beating yourself up for what?

One of my favorite lines is from Jackie Brown:

Ordell Robbie: You know you smoke too much of that s**t, that s**t gonna rob you of your own ambition.
Melanie: Not if your ambition is to get high and watch TV...

Everyone has their own idea of ambition, who are we to judge?  Good luck and enjoy your ride in life.

David- Since making the switch to quality over quantity several years ago, I've not run across much in a can.  (beer snob).  I went to trader Joe's again today to get more of their hefe, but they were sold out, so I walked out with two winter brew's instead. Way to get after it.  I'm hoping to find my way out next week.  I start HIM training on Monday, and the plan has way more cycling than I'm used to.  Hoping to get out on the road myself soon.

Thor-Next race is April 22nd or so, it's a 25k trail run.  It's mostly up and down, it dang near killed me last year, and I walked mile 10-13.  The run is 3 miles from home, and is in the middle of marathon training, so I run down, run the race, and run home.  Makes it a 21 miler.  This year, I'm going to take it easy on the trails, as I know what the course is like this time around.  Super pumped for my May 19th marathon.  Windermere marathon.  My 3rd time running.  best time so far is 3:35.  Hoping for a sub 3:30.  We have one here in April called "the heads up" tounament.  usualy bring in teams from bc, idaho, oregon, and washington.  It's a great time, and is my last hockey of the season.

DH-  Your in a funk.  You have a lot positive around you.  But your like a lot of us, your a hard critique on yourself.  50 k is awesome, 100 miles a week is insane.  I'm so sore on 30 a week.  Remember that passion, find out what's important, and go after it.  Proud of you man.

Emma-  Nice run, you finished.  build on that success.  way to hang in there and challenge your mental toughness.

Cynthia-  Get back on it.  Look forward to hearing of your future training successes.  Nice quote.

BigDH - 2012-02-23 2:22 PM Everyone sounds like they are doing so good and have a great attitude. Thanks everyone for the kind comments about my race. It was a real good time actually. Still running. I was hoping to get 100 miles in this week but man that is a lot. And my daughters birthday is on Saturday so I think I will be a little short. But real happy with my recovery, I managed to do an easy 20k yesterday, a little slow but it was good. I am feeling so blah about it though. I am having one of those moments were I am looking at my life and wondering what in the world is going on. I was up near the university yesterday and I went for my long run just around it and I was remembering about life in school and how driven I was and how important it was for me to do well and how much passion I had. I felt like I had this sense of purpose that I just don't feel now, even though now I am generally happier and more fulfilled now than I was then. Anyways, that is why I am not saying much. To answer the question though, my next race is April 1. A 10k. Hoping to switch it into beast mode for that one, if the weather cooperates (last year there was a big dump of snow before the race).

DH - I'm no shrink but I think what you are going through is totally normal for three reasons:

1) You just finished something that you have been working really hard for and now your brain is saying - what's next?  This happens to me all the time - especially after the holidays and my birthday.  I look forward to spending time with my best friends and I thoroughly enjoy the day (as you enjoyed your race and your time) but when it's over I get down in the dumps.  Then my brain locks onto something else (like spring break two months away) and I'm good for a while.

2) The Winter Blahs - Spring is just around the corner... Wait - you live in Canada - so it might arrive by June.

3) You may not be as driven - but now that you are older you are able to appreciate what you have in life.  When your 20 - your drive comes from wanting - wanting a good job, wanting more money, wanting to find the perfect spouse and those needs drive us to work hard to achieve those goals.  But now that you are older - you have moved from wanting to appreciating.  As you say - you are happier and more fulfilled now than back in the day.  Enjoy your accomplishments and appreciate how far you have come from eating ramen noodles and drinking Keystone Lite.

Doesn't sound like you're a slacker to me.  Despite feeling ill - you still managed to "drag" your bug to work every day.  If you were a slacker - you would have laid on the coach all week eating chocolate... you are also working extremely long hours.. Cut yourself a little slack and appreciate all your hard work in the other areas of your life.  Have a great weekend!

Kevin - I too used to believe that only crappy beer was sold in a can - but in the last 5 years that has totally changed.  This month in my brewing magazine they had a great article about how lots of good breweries are putting their beer in a can (even Sierra Nevada is gonna start canning this month).  Beer is a can is actually better since it can't be exposed to light.  Do yourself a favor and head to a really good beer store and try some of them out.  A great place to start is 21st Amendment Brewery out of San Fran.  All of their beers are good.  The can I had yesterday - Diesel by Six Point Brewing was incredible.  With all that biking ahead of you - you deserve it!

Looks like we are finally getting winter here- at least for today and tomorrow we are finally getting snow although it will be gone again by Monday. Working today so will take a rest day as I won't get home until probably 8:30 tonight and have to be up again at 5 tomorrow. May try to get to the pool early Sunday morning, otherwise it will be run only for me until tuesday morning

I might have to try throw together a team for the tourney. My wife would love to shop while I play hockey!

I am a practical beer snob. When I am sitting to enjoy a beer, i go with the good stuff, if it is after a hockey game/mowing lawn/ triathlon, I would even drink bud light! After a tri I did in BC the beer sponsor backed out so they replaced it with a non-alcoholic beer...tasted like the best beer ever after my first Oly!

Darren, I feel your pain. the past couple of weeks have been a bit of a lost cause. Take a week off and evaluate your goals? Maybe switch up things and enter a triathlon to add a little spice to your life. In the end realize what is important in your life. To me, my family is everything to me. They are what what made me lose 90lbs. Everytime I see them, i thank god that I have found a new healthy way of living!

Now there is a good chance of me realizing my dream of retiring when I am 85...Laughing

Emmanem - 2012-02-22 8:41 PM Hey everyone!  I finished my 5k on Sunday... it was the coldest and rainiest run of my life.  It was a lot of fun though.  I went in knowing I was under trained so I just ran and walked when I needed.  On friday I am starting Insanity!  My fiance got it for me for Valentines day  I couldn't be more excited.  I will be doing this for a while so I can focus on my weight loss.  I've reworked my race schedule a little.  I think my first tri this year will be in July.  I have friends coming to visit in May the weekend I was supposed to do a triathlon and since I haven't seen some of them in 6+ months I plan on spending every second I can with them.

Make sure you take your friends for a run!

great job on the 5k! At least it wasn't snowing!

No PR! I got side stiching pretty bad after pushing the first five at above race pace.  I did have barly pops after hockey today.  I found a new brand of Hefe that tastes just like the Hefe in Germany.  It's put out by Trader Joe's.  Hockey tonight was outstanding, a good workout.  Tomorrow is off for me.  Go get it people.

Crap - sorry to hear you didn't beat your time today but it sounds like everything else is going well.    Next time, brother!

I had that beer from Trader Joes last week - it was really good and cheap.  I'm gonna try a new beer from Six Point.  Do they have that brand out there on the Left Coast?  It's actually in a can!

I have had some good Trader joes house brand beers when down in the states. For the price it is good value lawn mowing beer! Love it! Hmm perhaps that would be my weight problems!

Glad to hear you are still getting your workouts in and enjoying the extra calories you are burning off.  I read what you said about beer and I agree.  I love the good stuff - but what I really want when I'm really thirsty is a bud or even a molson (see me reaching out to all you Canuks).  Have a great weekend!

This week was a complete bust.  I got in 3 workouts all week.  I can make excuses about the weather and all that, but I just wasn't motivated to make it a priority.  Starting again on Monday.  I've already penned in training on the calendar so no excuses!

Met a great group of people today on my first local group ride!  Lots of mental toughness training today with wind at 10 miles, felt like more, and gust up to 14.  Some of the guys were pretty good riders and let me ask lots of questions.  Technique is key and they gave me some great drills and a place to get on a computrainer for real time evaluation of my stroke.  We rode 26 miles in just under 2 hours.

What a difference riding in a group makes...I would have quit or not pushed as hard with the wind blowing like it was if I had been by myself.  Can't wait for our next ride!
