IceManScott - 2013-01-27 2:25 PM

Up to 17 miles @ 2:20 yesterday.  Hilly course.  Interesting running so much so soon.  Liking it really.  Hard bike today with 4 sets of 3 hill climbs at 105 to 110%.  Able to do it after yesterday's run.  Happy.

Good to learn something about simple bike maintenance.   You can fix shifting problems really easily and adjust brakes. I took bike building classes.  Love playing with the bikes.

Great running Ice!! I have seen your running posts here and on FB. certainly seems like your coach has you running longer earlier this year.

rquinn23 - 2013-01-27 3:08 PM I've been MIA for a while! Had company in town all week, ate out pretty much every day, training derailed a bit. Got in a couple of runs and Crossfit sessions, and a couple of bike rides on the fixie, but definitely not a stellar week! Getting back on track now, as my official IM training program starts tomorrow (sort of--Monday is a rest day, but it's still the beginning). I've decided to use the BeIron Fit training plan, so it's 30 weeks. I'll be changing the beginning a bit to add a swim, since I'm joining a masters group and need to work on my technique. I might replace a bike with a swim or just add it as an extra session, just not sure about that yet. I also have to focus on nutrition, because I did not lose the weight I wanted to in order to be at a good starting weight, so that will be a challenge. I have a half marathon in February, then one triathlon a month starting in March. Took the tri bike out for its first outdoor ride this year. Got in 24 solo miles, felt pretty good but had soreness and fatigue in my neck from being in the aero position. Does anyone else get this soreness? I can't tell if it's poor fit or just that I haven't been riding in that position. I did have the bike professionally fit in 2011 when I got it, but since I didn't ride it last year, I can't remember if that soreness went away or not. It's great to read about everyone's successes and training stories! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Oh, here's my latest blog entry: http://beakersironmanjourney.blogspot.com/2013/01/an-easy-lifea-dif...

I always found it funny that most training plans start on Monday and usually with a day off!!  Which level of the plan are you using?  I would add as much swimming as you can/want but be careful taking out too much cycling.  Ok in first 10 weeks to miss a bike now and then, but after that better ride!

Since it sounds like you haven't been on your bike a lot lately, I would say that the fatigue is just due to not having the endurance built up yet.  After riding regularly if it doesn't get better, maybe a trip back to the fitter would be in order.

I enjoyed your blog post, your thoughts on nutrition and training cycles is great and appropriate.  Once you get within 20 weeks, your nutrition needs to focus on meeting your training needs.  Some people still lose a little weight, but it shouldn't be the focus of your diet.

Good post!

Well I was already to get back into my normal routine with a swim this morning (actually want to pick the swim volume up significantly while continuing the bike and run build).  Unfortunately the first post on FB was the Y stating that the pool is closed with a mechanical problem.  So, spending the morning finishing my computer project that I wanted to get done Saturday.

Oh well, also have a short 2 mile run on the plan today.  Going to head to the treadmill shortly and get that done.

If you are training today, train well!!

That stinks about the pool Ken. At least you caught it before leaving. Too many times I've shown up for a swim only to get turned away....

This morning was a great trainer ride and a decent swim. Now I'm ready for a nap instead of a workday.

Base build continues for me. I am hoping to continue to build miles under me both running and biking and add a swim where I can. 5 and 6 miles runs and 1 hour cycling sessions will continue through February before I really get focused on a training plan. Hope everyone has a good week.

Well.....

this is kinda getting frustrating.  I know we've had the discussion about having no trouble sleeping, even after a big cup o' joe!  But, for some reason, I can't sleep every Sunday night!  Not sure why or what I'm doing different.  Strange

In other news......I think my coach is smoking something LOL .  We've had multiple discussions about what kind of time I have during the week with my commute/job.  He's got me doing 2-3 hour workouts during the week now.  I'm lucky to even be home 4 hours a night, and that's if I go to bed in time for 6 hours of sleep!  I think he may either be very dissapointed or I'm going to be REALLY tired!

Good plan Eddie!  Just keep the running reasonably easy effort and you will be in good shape when the plan starts!

Maybe he is testing you to see what you can handle physically and logistically?  Just be honest with yourself and him so you don't wind up fried or injured!

Fortunately I am good with a couple of hours a day during the week and have not been given even that much yet.  Although this week does have a couple of 90 minute weekday rides.

Good luck getting it in Brian!

Gosh Brian, that seems like a lot given your time commitments!! Good luck with your training, & your coach.

Bill & Ice, great races this weekend!!

A little late in the game, but for me I'd have to say my favorite training equipment would be my aero bars (I have a road bike) & bike computer. I love my aero bars so much, they are so comfortable!! I compare them to a recliner vs a chair, when I get in the aero bars, it's like being in a recliner on my bike, I could hang out that way all day! And the computer, well that keeps me honest, big difference between what I think is hard & what I can actually do.

Warmed up this weekend, so I was able to get out on Sunday for a good run. Only 5 miles, but a really happy run. I got a little burnt out with all the running during marathon training, so it's nice to take some time off & really enjoy it again. It was a little wet, but I'll take wet over cold anyway.

So Becky's post got me thinking. How do you all manage training plans with races, & determining how many races to do?? I guess that's where a coach would be really helpful in tailoring a plan to make it all work.

Do you choose races to get you ready for your "A" race, or choose them because you just want to do them? How do you know what is too much or too little?

Like for me, clearly IMWI is my "A" race, I WANT to do a half too, but can't decide between Kansas or Muncie. Muncie falls perfectly on the training plan, but I'd rather do Kansas, or do I do both? I'll probably add an Olympic & a HM in too. My problem (in addition to not being able to make decisions ) is I take mental comfort in training plans, I might switch days around, but I RARELY alter them. It helps me come race day to know I'm prepared. So how do you find the balance?

I'm just going to try and get it done.  My wife will not be happy with me this week though! Sealed

I consulted with my coach about races this year.  But in the past I just did stuff I wanted to do and was mindful of proper recovery between races.  In hindsight, I tried to hold a peak too long for my races during the summer.  That is how I ended up with the PF

Way to roll with the punches, Ken.

Good luck with the schedule, Brian.  I am in awe.

I am trying to figure out the racing thing, too.  Last year I raced way too much, but it was essentially my first season in the sport.  I love racing, and these were all Sprint or Oly races, so not much recovery.  In hindsight, it was fun, and I think it was good for me as it allowed me to get really comfortable with racing--the logistics, the problems, the one piece racing suit, etc.

This year I'm scaling back some, and identifying some races as more important than others, in the hopes of improving a bit more.  I'm still probably racing too often, but I am in this for fun, and racing for me is the fun part, even if it's a "C" race that I just train right through, it's usually more fun than a brick by myself!

I am on a coach lite plan, in that there is not as much one on one, but one conversation I have had with him is about racing, at least during base training.  He isn't a big fan of racing a lot as it presents opportunities for injury this time of year.  This is more a function of pace and intensity that normally goes along with racing.  But I told him what races I was doing, he puts them in the plan with explicit instructions on warm up and pace strategy.

That said, he knows my 4 long course race plans, but we haven't discussed the local sprint/oly tris.  I hope to discuss that with him when we meet next week so I can start registering for them if he thinks they are a good idea.

Sorry been MIA lately - came down with a cold on Thursday and felt horrible all weekend.  Feeling better today and hoping to get back on track!

Favorite training tool would probably come down to my trainer and my gym membership at the moment - too cold and icy/snowy to get out (-10F out at the moment).

Planning races in AK is easy, there are only a few sprints and 1 oly in the area all bunched within 3 months of each other.  We do have quite a few run races, but still nothing compared to you all out East. It does become complicated though when you start planning races somewhere in the lower 48. I chose my A race based on date and location.

Great Job on your HM Bill!

I don't think there is anything wrong with racing often if you can be disciplined enough to recognize the appropriate effort to maintain your training goals.  It is just difficult to peak and maintain that peak over an extended period of time.

At the end of it all though, we should all do this for fun as most of us aren't going to get any more out of this other than health and fun times!

I also have to focus on nutrition, because I did not lose the weight I wanted to in order to be at a good starting weight, so that will be a challenge.

Good post!

I will be following the "competitive" plan in the BeIron Fit book. The first 10 weeks has just 2 swims per week and 3 each of bike and run, so I am adding a swim since that is what I need to improve upon. I will try not to miss a bike, but since the only indoor trainer I have is rollers, I am afraid that I might let one of the bike sessions slide per week. But we'll see--I am committed to getting in all the planned sessions I can! Once the time changes and I have daylight after work, I'll have no problem getting all the rides in. Plus the bike is my strength, and I can build fitness quickly once I start riding more. I have also considered bringing my bike to work and riding around here until dark, and if I haven't finished my ride before dark I'll just tool around our building--better than being inside on a trainer, and no need to worry about traffic!

As for Ali's question on planning races, the BeIronFit plan has an Oly scheduled in the 2nd phase and a half at the beginning of the 3rd phase--unfortunately, I don't have any affordable half races closeby during that time (Florida after May is quite hot to be out on course at midday so most half races are before June or after September here, and my IM is August). So I picked a half in April because it close to home and affordable, and following that I'll be doing one sprint or Oly per month just to race. I won't alter my training plan to be "ready" for any of these races, as I'm just looking at them as training races. However, I am quite competitive (with myself) so I know I'll still "race" them. I might do my own version of a HIM at the point the training plan calls for it, mostly to work on pre-race and in-race nutrition.

I'm already struggling with my first day of IM training--as it is a rest day and I kept arguing with myself whether I should just run in the morning, or go to CrossFit after work...but since I want to stick to this plan, including the rest day, I will just be patient--tomorrow is Crossfit before work and a run and swim after work, so I'll get plenty of training in tomorrow!

jennifer65 - 2013-01-26 7:57 AM What's the best/most useful piece of kit you've ever bought? Mine is definitely my prescription goggles. In the uk a good pair of speedo goggles cost about £10 but last Feb I bought from my optician, some prescription ones for only£28 - which I thought was reasonable. I can't really see a thing without my glasses so, until I got these I could never even time myself at a lap 'cause I can't read my watch with my bare eyes. However, now I can read my watch and, in a race, it is so much easier to find my bike after coming out of the water - previously I had to rely on my son to be hanging around the pool/ sea exit to hand me my glasses. Good luck to all those racing this weekend. We have had more snow last night but appatently from now it's going to warm up, rain hard and get very windy. No more excuses then. Jennifer

That is interesting as I would have never thought of needing prescription goggles since I had my eyes fixed.  I would say the most useful is/was any of my Garmins.  Even when I was self coaching the data I downloaded and compared to what I learned here and other sources helped me get where I am in this sport (from BOP to MOP and able to see FOP).  The only other non-essential was the time and money I spent on swim lessons.  Hopefully by November, I will add the money spent on coaching!  Smile

Good question Jennifer!  Now get outside and run! Cool

I would LOVE some prescription goggles! I never can see the bouys which makes the swim course look even that much longer

I have always overbooked myself race wise.  This year I am scaling way back on races. I am signed up for two tris and that will probably be it. I will do some more rides in preparation for IMWI.  Besides the benefit of a supported ride, I like the more laid back atmosphere when not in a race.  I know some people thrive on it but it just makes me nervous   Also there are a ton of very competitve people in this area. I won't even get it to the Boulder scene.  It is fun to see Crowie doing a training run while you are racing though

Lots of different thoughts on racing, interesting and probably no right answer as everyone's situation is different!

90 minute Z2 bike this morning with 2 X 10 minutes in Z3.

Warming up enough here for a day or 2 so maybe tomorrows run and be done outside! Smile

Easy training for the the rest of the week as this will be my recovery week. Planning two runs and three bike sessions. I am leaving the swimming part alone for at least another month then back in the pool.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Has anyone tried Zoot triathlon shoes? I'm still searching for the right long-distance triathlon shoe. I prefer a minimalist style with enough longevity to cover the marathon distance. I ran my last marathon in Saucony Kinvara's and I really like them, but they are not necessarily a good tri shoe. I recently bought some K-Swiss that I'm training in now, and I like that there are drain holes for water, but it's just not the right shoe for me beyond a half marathon distance.

Zoot is on sale through Active Advantage right now, and I'm wondering if I should try them. It looks like the Ultra Tempo 5.0 would be what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

rquinn23 - 2013-01-29 11:51 AM Has anyone tried Zoot triathlon shoes? Thanks!

I LOVE zoot shoes.  I have a pair of the Ultra TT5.0's.  They have a little less arch support than I'm used to, but I still love them.  They are in the low arch support range and I usually where medium height.  My favs out of the line are the Utlra Kane, which is now the Ultra Kalini.  I ran a marathon on those and trained for it in a seperate pair of the same shoe.  No complaints!

robingray_260 - 2013-01-29 12:05 PM I have a 2 hr trainer ride today (longest one so far!) - my son is home from school sick so we shall if I can get it all in.  Tomorrow should be warm enough to do my 1 hr 15 min run outside - fingers crossed!

I hope you get both of your sessions in Robin!  I hate to ask this, since I am a weather wimp, but how warm does it need to get there to be considered outside running weather? Embarassed
