Anyone else have issues with the auto-calculated paces? How does 23:59 on a 3-mile run work out to 7:47 per mile? I tried to manually enter pace, but it recalculates it. Oh well. What a great race though - first tri, ocean swim and everything. Had a great time, took it relatively easy on the swim because I had no idea what to expect, but pushed a little harder on the bike and big-time on the run. Since I'm signed up for a 3-race series this summer on the same course I have a time to beat for July, just need to keep momentum between now and then. Hope everyone's having a good week, Andres Nice! My 5430 sprint last year did a similar weird thing on my swim. The official results put me at a 1:34 pace, but in my race report it kept defaulting to 1:24/ 100, I never figured out how to change it. |

I'm getting some increases in the water, but I'm still noticing that when I'm tired, I seem to be moving at just inches per pull. Would be nice if I could do the race using paddles, because I'd be done super quick and without any real stress on me. My swim coach is helping clean up my stroke a lot, but now I really need to start looking at how to increase my fitness to go the distance, swimming is still the only sport where I'm iffy. I know I can ride the distance, and do it well. I know I can run. I don't actually know if I can swim the distance yet, so I need to just add in yardage. I have a month, I'm thinking if I can hit 3x to 4x a week swims, I'll be able to get it handled. I know how you feel. I've gradually gotten to my race distance. However, I'm still nervous because I'm just barely there. It's comforting to know you can either stand up or grab the pool edge if you need to. In the end I think you'll be fine and rise to the occasion! |

I'm going to remember what you mentioned about the shirt at transition too. I would probably do the same thing. Ocean swim for a first tri, that's a lot of courage there. How did you practice getting your shoes on during the ride? That's on my todo list. Thanks - I try to set things up so that there's only one way to do them, especially when you're not functioning at 100% (good life concept, not just in triathlon). If you lay the shirt on top of the helmet, you have to remove it (and hopefully think to put it on) BEFORE you can pick up the helmet and strap it on. On the shoes, I just did some practice on/offs in my neighborhood, I'm sure anyone looking out their windows was wondering what the heck I was doing. I rubber-banded my shoes so they'd be parallel to the ground and not drag when I was rolling the bike (through the finger loops and onto the frame or bottle cages) then tried a running start. Once you get your feet on top of the shoes you can start pedaling, the rubber bands snap and fall away, then practice reaching down, getting a finger in the loop and sticking a foot in, pedal again to keep momentum, then reach down to fasten the velcro. I rode around for a while un-velcro-ing and pulling feet out, riding on the tops of the shoes, then putting feet back in and re-velcro-ing. I did it in the race only because I got comfortable practicing around my neighborhood like that; if not I would have just put my shoes on while sitting on the ground and walked/jogged in cleats until exiting transition, most people were doing that. For another perspective on what do do with your shirt.... I put mine across my handle bars. This way is was all ready to just slip on and it would be hard to ride off with it there. |

The intercostal muscle felt ok but my bulging discs were not happy to be back in the saddle. Too bad, I'm glad I got out there. I might do a race this weekend that was not on ly calendar. Its the Summer Solstace tri - and it's coming up this Friday at 7pm. My back is killing me - but doing as race in the evening might be a lot of fun. And I need to have fun right now. The only major drawback is that I have a race next Saturday... Maybe I'll do both and just not worry about time. Watched the Bruins lose to the Blackhawks tonight. The beers were flowing... Working on cleaning out my fridge. Four beers left and counting. Going to pass out. Good night. And congrats to Kevin! I hope you found some fun time! |

Night time racing was fun as hell! There was an incredible sunset, and the lake we were running around was a beautiful backdrop. With a race coming up next week, I never pushed myself and instead forced my self to slow down. But as a wise mystic once said, slow is smooth and smooth is fast. I'm not sure but I think I completed this race at a faster pace than my May race which was a PR. I need to wait for the official times to come out... But I was pumped! Loved it! I'm celebrating with an ice cold Two Hearted Ale... So good! Aaaah you did find some fun! Nice! |

Things could be worse, like a new convertible car or another woman...things could be a lot worse! They could. I had a mini-one not too far back, resulted in a few grand on rifles and silver, oh and wrecking the diff on my jeep so I could get a newer xterra... Could be a lot worse. I still can't run..see the doctor this week. I am giving her back the pills and asking for other options. Going to make the appointment with the massage therapist and easy back into training. Work is challenging but great. Three families came in to meet me Friday, all so friendly. One girl even sent me an audio of a song she wrote and played; unfortunately, I still couldn't get her into the University at the tuition reduction until she meets the test score requirement. Good luck with the massage. I have a few friends that swear by acupuncture too. BTW, UNR? I almost went there. I had an interesting weekend, did a mid-distance (16mi) bike ride with some fartleks in it, and while coming in I felt a lot fresher than I anticipated so I turned it into an impromptu brick, and added on a 2.2 mile run. My first brick was a painful experience where I wanted to puke and die of cramping. This one was downright pleasant in comparison. Felt strong at the end, kinda wished I had gone an extra mile. Makes me think that getting through this sprint will be "no big deal" if I can get my swimming figured out. Already looking for a half marathon to do in the fall, to help bring up my weak running. Sunday, headed over to CDA and watched the Ironman. Winning pro got in at 8 hours 17 minutes. Which is absolutely amazing. Sporting a sweet sunburn, and didn't do my run yesterday, but that's ok I think. Learned a bit about what goes on. One thing I was looking at and wondering is how to directly increase pedaling power. When doing my rides I'm sitting around 15-16mph, these top level Ironman guys are averaging 23mph. Now I know that's thousands of miles of practice, but there has to be something I can do to get up a couple mph. Any recs? Yup, good ol University of Nevada...we are trying to get away from the UNR tag..UNLV can be UNLV, we are the University of Nevada. lol.. |

On rides of 1.5 hours or greater how do you carry enough water or just plan it in a loop to pick up more? Will 2 be enough for a 2 hour ride? I have no idea and don't want to do something stupid in the Florida heat far away from home and stores and run out of fluids. On this same topic, roughly how many calories should someone be taking in per hour as well? I'm sure this has been covered a bazillion times but the posts I read seemed like brag fests on how far they can go without anything which doesn't seem like the smartest option. Alex - Different people have different sweat rates based upon a number of factors including weight, ambient temperature, type of exercise, and exertion level. The best weigh (get it to ) to find out is to do a couple sweat tests. Find a week when you can workout 2-3 times for an hour when the temp is the same. Weigh yourself in the buff before and after each workout - the average difference will give you your rate. For example - let's say you lose on average 1.5 lbs each hour. That means you will need to drink 24 oz of water each hour in order to stay hydrated. As for calories - I usually shoot for between 200-400 per hour. Hope this helps! DQ |

This is very inspiring. For anyone not familiar with, it's a book about Dave Scott and Mark Allen's journey to their duel at the 1989 IronMan. This may have been the shot I needed. I was up to 211 a few days ago, but have gotten it back down to 206 today. I'm going to start running again today, and take it from there. Maybe sign up for a 10K on October if I can get into good running shape and get the weight under control. Flirting with the idea of going all in on May marathon again leading into next season. Iron War is the best triathlon book I have ever read. A real page turner. However it's not quite as good as the one they will write about the epic battle you and I will have one day - Beer War - How the winner drank his fill of Deschutes while the loser drank his fill of Coors Light |
