I did my long run today after deciding to keep it the same 6.2 miler as last week do to not having the legs under me to push it to 8 this week. It was a good decision. Last week I had a 9:14/mi pace. This week on the same run I was able to run it at an 8:40/mi pace. That's 10 seconds slower than my speed work pace for the last two weeks. Took a big step forward today. My goal now is to get back to the 8 min/mi marathon pace I was once able to hold. Long way to go.

Next week, I'm going to up my long run to 8.2 miles and log 17 miles for the week.

Hey everyone!

It's been awhile, but I'd love to rejoin BDAS for the 2016 year! I was just glancing through posts and love seeing a lot of familiar faces, mixed in with some new ones (new to me at least!).

Name: Nicole

Story: I live in Baltimore, Maryland, originally from Carlisle, PA (outside of Harrisburg). I grew up an athlete, including swimming from age 6 to 6th grade and Track/XC in HS and college. I always said after college I would start competing in triathlons but kept making excuses for why I didn't have time to train. Two years ago I finally broke down and signed up for one down in ATL, and did another one in Baltimore later that year. I LOVED them. I think I smiled the entire time. So far I've only done sprints, and will eventually work my way up to Olympic Distance. Probably not much higher than that b/c during my Track/XC years I was plagued with shin splints and had multiple stress fractures. My legs don't love distance.
Last year I was excited to sign up for a few more tris, but broke my pinky in May, and had 7 weddings (plus bachelorette parties and bridal shower galore...oh and 10 pregnant friends and their baby showers), so I decided to save my money and time and take the year off. Then I broke my foot in November (at the final wedding...in England...2 weeks in to a 3 week European adventure) and am finally healed up and ready to get back in the saddle! Hoping to do a few tris this year, including the Baltimore one again in October! I got 2nd 2 years ago so my goal is to train really hard and win this year.

Family Status: I just started seeing someone a couple months ago. He's actually doing his first tri in May and it is what motivated me to start focusing on triathlons again. I also have a little furbaby :-) an adorable cat named Raven (pic attached ).

Current Training: I started swimming last week! Once it gets warmer I will hit the roads on the bike and running again, but trying to ease into that.

2015 Races: None :-/ I've broken 2 bones in my life and both of them were in 2015...not my year

Races Planned: The only one I know I'm doing is the Baltimore Tri in October. Hope to do at least 2 others over the summer.

Beer Preference: You guys are going to think I'm not meant for this group when I tell you I gave up beer for lent. Not because I don't love it, but b/c I love it too much. Not being able to work out I have been feeling quite soft lately, so thought 40 days without beer while I start working out again would speed up the getting fit process. Last year you all opened my eyes to good beers though and I have branched out a lot. I don't like really hoppy beers, but will try anything these days.

Looking forward to catching up with everyone!

Nicole -So glad to have you back - just be careful! And don't apologize about not liking hoppy beers. Kevin makes fun of people who drink fruit beers (me) and we still let him hang around!

That's a huge jump - sounds like getting another week under your belt sounds like it did the trick. Have a fruit beer and celebrate!

The telanovella continues - HQ got rear-ended today. She's ok but we need a new bumper. Oh yea - and I woke up with a chest cold and missed my last long run before my half marathon next week.

What I'm really bummed out about those is that Mike Reilly just posted his schedule for the year and he's not coming to IMMD this year. Major bummer!!!

Dave Q - sorry to hear about all the family issues (it is a true, venezuelan telenovela !!) - hope your brother and parents get better soon.

Nicole, great to see you back in the group. I have learned a lot here about beer (thought the work beer meant just "pilsner", new world for me...) - look forward to see your posts and progress on your training (BTW, gorgeous cat!)

Today 1 hour bike and 1:20 long, easy run feeling great - may be my EPO has increased after a week in the pyrenees.

Juan

I'm still around, I've just been finding excuses to jump off of the exercise bandwagon. I never fully jump off, I just dabble till I'm serious again. Hopefully my 8 mile run today is the kick in the pants I need to reignite the fire. It was hard to pass up the outside run in 50+ degree F weather.

Goals? Heck I like my goal of seriously exercising for the next few weeks. I need the time to kick the endorphines in so that I look forward to exercising again.

Sorry to hear about the lifetime soap opera DQ. I hope the soap opera gets cancelled.

Hi all -
Lot of catching up to do. Almost two weeks ago I left for the Philippines and was completely off the grid. No service and barely wifi for a week. I was still able to keep the core challenge going and get in two decent runs of about 35 mins each.

Last week I came back late in the week got completely bogged down with work and had family still visiting so I really failed at checking in here. However I did complete all 6 days of my training plan, substituting Sunday's run with my first multi sport race of the year, the Meta Sprint series Aquathlon. The good news is I think I did really well for myself was very happy. The bad news is it was still in the bottom half of my age group...so still a ton of work to do!

Goals for this week are
1) hit all 6 training plan week three workouts which are 2x each swim bike run.
2) keep up with the core challenge.
3) at least one yoga session. I felt the stretching was helping me for a couple weeks and then I've stopped. Time to try again.

Dave sorry to hear about the life struggles. Hang in there!

-Matt

My podiatrist (ultramarathon runner) told me to run on a treadmill barefoot for a few minutes to find my stride. Then find a neutral shoe and start to run using that stride. I was a heel-toe runner but when testing barefoot that doesn't work, so my barefoot stride ended up shifting to a more midfoot/forefoot stride. It feels strange...like you're running lighter if that makes any sense. It just feels less jarring.

Mike is right about stride changes, they do take a while. It uses different muscles than heel toe. You're calves will hurt a bit ;-) Last year I would do a little of both. It wasn't really planned, I would just end up falling back on heel-toe as the run went longer and my legs got more tired. This year I'm going to really work to stay midfoot the whole run. Hopefully it will help with all of the joint pain I would experience post race. The muscles we not really the issue...but the joints...WOW.

#74--3mi run with the pup this morning.

Question for the group:
I bought a new HRM (Garmin, premium soft strap model) after my old one crapped out in August. I have been training without, but really missed that metric. I've now tried twice to use it, and neither time did it ever pick up a signal. The 910x directions say to put the HRM on and then turn on your unit. It will pair when within 3m of the HRM. Done--didn't work. I tried tightening the strap, using electrode gel, changing to a cotton shirt, and wetting the strap down completely. Nothing worked. It also says that you may need to use it for 5-10 minutes before it will display--did that too and nothing. Any suggestions as to what I should try next? I'm more than a bit peeved that I had to buy a new one in the first place. The old one was a warranty replacement from my first. Both lasted less than a year. Personally, I think they should last longer than that. It should work out of the box!

Welcome back nichole.

I had a minor set back missing 2 workouts sun/mon, but I will be back tomorrow with a 3 a day.

I am up for trying to do a race as a big group. I think now is the time to plan for it next year. I know my race season is planned about a year in advance for budget reasons.

I would definitely give them a call - it should last a while. I've been using mine for just over a year at least 3-4 days/week, have never washed the strap and it still works well. Something isn't working for you. It's worth a phone call - maybe they'll at least trouble shoot with you over the phone.
Oh, and something totally gross - I've never used electrode gel, I just lick the strap along the front where the sensors are and it's worked every time...TMI? hahaha. Gross, I know.

Okay, nailed all of my workouts this past week from my training plan, so happy about that. Single-legged squats crushed my left glute so I had to that a bit of a rest this week from my PT exercises. I just came back from PT today and I have a few additional ones a bit more tame to lead me back into the heavy stuff. He's also giving me exercises for the gym - to kind of get me on more of a plan for that.
Rest day today. Kids are on vacation this week but I'll do my best to stick with my plan.

Make sure you have unpaired the old HRM.  It might not pickup the new one if the old one is still paired.  Just a thought.
