Elite 4372 Connecticut | Subject: RE: Becoming Sober Thank you all. I was presented my one year coin at my home group last night. On the way out to our car, my 12 year old daughter looked at me and said, "Good job mom." It was amazing how touched I was by those three words. I am truly blessed. |

How has everyone been doing? The old saying about sobriety that "it just keeps getting better" couldn't be more true for me right now. Life is really good. I just had the honor of being the speaker at my Home Group last Monday. It wasn't my first time doing that, but it's always kinda special for me when I get to be the speaker at the first meeting I went to when I came into the program. |

Regular 525 | Subject: RE: Becoming Sober Just reading through some of this today. I have had a rough couple months and have had several times where I have nearly thrown 15+ years of sobriety away. I have not thought about seriously drinking in probably 10 years and it has all come rushing back to me. A couple weeks ago I knew that I could not go out to eat for fear that I would order a drink and no one would be there to stop me. I have steered clear to this point and my closest circle know that I am struggling right now and have let me know they are there for me. I just need to be sure to lean on them and that is on of my biggest problems. You can never forget that it is always a struggle, sometimes its easier than others. Good luck to you all and use any resource you need to keep fighting the good fight. |

Sounds like you could really use a getting back to basics approach, or something. Never forget that you do NOT have to do this alone.... and as long as you have Gratitude for your sobriety, you will never take a drink. |

I like this sentence I heard on a speaker tape once. "I've been sober for fourteen years and the longest I've ever had to go without a drink is 24 hours." |

I think the one thing I keep being reminded of is that even though I am sober, life still happens and there will still be rough times. I know what I need to do when I am having a hard time but I am having a hard time doing it. I guess it's my character defects that are in my way. I'm going through the steps again and doing an intensive Big Book study with my sponsor and a few other girls. Thanks for bumping the thread. I always love to see and hear how you all are doing. |

Started to like the 'buzz' I got from it, but I've kicked that. Three days now without it and back to doing some running. I was sick, so I'm giving myself some leeway with getting that warm buzzy feeling with the meds. ---Speaking of kicking... A guy I work with is a junkie. He wanted me to start "coaching" him to get him into better physical fitness. I told him the first thing he should/has to do is kick the junk. Well...I don't have to worry about that, because he got arrested and is facing 6 years in jail. I hope he cleans up in there. When he gets out I will be more than happy to kick his into shape. |

Most people think it's a crock and it can't work. I'm here to tell you that it works, and it works well. I had to reread parts of the book a few times to get the message; I quit and I don't have to live my life day to day. I've been sober for 3 years, and I haven't ever had a craving for alcohol. I've used his book to stop smoking as well. Myself, my wife, and one of my good friends have used the Stop Smoking book and all three of us have quit smoking for almost 10 years. AA is a good route for support, especially for those who have access to it. The support network can't be underestimated, but at the end of the day it's up to you how you want your life to look. Alcohol is an addictive drug, just like heroin and cigarettes. I know you don't underestimate its destructive power. Just don't underestimate how good your life can be without it. Two days later I was home alone and for some reason a shot of Jack sounded appropriate! We have liquor, beer and wine in the house and it never bothered me before. I mean it was like a voice said " Go get a shot of Jack Daniels, just one, don't get drunk, just one shot." A different voice said, "As long as it's just one, we'll be OK, who would know?" WTF, twelve years sober and I find myself rationalizing again!!! I had some iced tea instead. The beast is still there, waiting. I always need to remember that. |
