I've heard of those crazy fireman schedules. The worst one I heard about was in Charlotte NC.  3 days on 3 off,  2 on 2 off, 1 on 1 off. Planning around that schedule would be a nightmare. Most of our local guys work alternating 12 hour shifts for three days then have three days off.

There are a variety of schedules out there.  The most popular is called the "kelly."  You would work 24 on, 24 off, for three shifts, then have 4 days off.  We used to work this, but went to the 48-96 about three years ago.

Question folks.  I'm doing a half mary next weekend and have been working on my training schedule.  I've been tapering my run/bike to give my legs a break before the race.  Should I also cut back on my swim workouts? I'm trying to reschedule the swims I missed last week and under normal conditions I could slip it in on my lunch next Friday but that would be the day before my race. Would that be OK since its not really a leg intensive workout or should I keep that day open?

You going for a PR or are you just running it?

I have never "tapered" before a race but I am not the smartest person out there!

Just running it. Its my first race of the season so I'm just taking it easy. Its really just building up to marathons later on so I haven't been tapering as such, I'm just trying to avoid double workouts that week and not doing any running/biking the two days before the race. I was thinking of swimming MWF but wasn't sure of the Friday workout with a race the next day.

That sounds good to me - you know your body best and still want a good effort.

Don't even ask me about recovery - I get on the bike that afternoon and go for a spin to loosen everything up!

x2 on the recovery. I took a week off after a race once and really regretted it.  If I'm aching, that's a sign that I need to work out.

It really depends on how you feel.  Not just your legs, but your overall health.  I would probably shy away from running or biking for a couple days prior to the race just like you said.  As for the swim, there's really no reason you can't as long as you feel up to it.  If you feel drained, are getting poor amounts of sleep, or just not feeling right, then pass.  Otherwise, go for it.  Speaking for myself, I feel crappy if I don't do some kind of workout.

As for recovery, I wouldn't run again until you are pain free.  As I'm sure you've experienced, DOMS will be the worst two days afterwards.  Take it easy.  I would focus on swims and light cycling until your legs feel fresh again.

Hope that helps.  Just my naive two cents!

It really depends what your looking to do with bike.  If your looking for a bike to take out and ride the trails on the weekend, then sure.  At 6.6 pounds for the frameset, I wouldn't want to be racing on it.  But, I'm a gram weenieWink

Now, for the price difference in the two, the complete bike seems to be a better deal.  I would buy the complete bike for the frame, fork, and whatever other components I decided to keep, then sell the others Ebay or Craigslist.  I would use the money to offset the cost of the components I would want to uprgade.  I pretty sure you could come out ahead this way.

Does that help?

Since you're not trying to race it, then I would just train through it without tapering.  I usually only alter my training schedule if it's an A or a B race.  For A races, I do a full taper; for B races, I might rest a few days before and ease up on my workouts for the week (which looks like what you're doing).  It looks like you're using it as a training run, go ahead and swim the day before!

x2 on ignoring the taper.  If anything, I would avoid tempo runs or speedwork the week before the HM, and maybe a 2-3 mile run at most the day before.  Other than that...business as usual.  This is of course assuming that your later marathons are more important.

Thanks for your input folks. I think I'll plan an easy swim for the Friday and see how I feel that day. Shouldn't be a problem.
After the race isn't really an issue. Saturday is usually a race or a long run so I take a rest day on Sunday and Monday is always a light workout.

Thanks for all the good input.  That's one of the things that I love about BT is there are a lot of people with a lot more experience than I have that are more then willing to answer questions and help out any way they can.

Hardtail!  With pack weight for those races, I'm thinking hardtail.  Probably going to want something stouter like an all mountain build too componentry.  I definately won't be going after the AZT or Colorado with my race stuff.

Podium.  Nope! I'm just too lazy to haul around the extra weight!

Tim - I am not a podium man like yourself!  Would different components help with weight - not that it matters that much - like wheelsets and such?

But I guess that goes back to me not being a podium type.

I want something that will survive AZT and possible GDR!!  That is key to all things!!!

I like the component upgrade idea.  I do like to spend the money to get nice components but its not a weight issue for me. I was spoiled with my first bike. It wasn't the best frame but it had nice components.  When I went to replace it, I was going to go with cheaper components to get a nicer frame but could definitely feel the difference in shifting when I took the bikes for a test ride. In the end I splurged and bought a better frame and better components and was really happy with the results.
