ironannekidd - 2010-04-28 9:15 AM Wes - Is it REALLY expensive to paint a motorcycle helmet?

When I got my new bike last year I was going to get my helmet painted the same color. I got a quote of $250 to get it painted. I can buy a new helmet for that.

I painted a set of Dura Ace wheels last year for a guy.  He wanted them to match his TIME RXR ULTeam.  $500
Helmets depending on graphics would be bt $200-500.
I mostly do Bikes $1k-3k
Cars $5k-15k(Painted several cars that have covered magazines)
But I just do it for side money to spend on my other obsessions.

wmcgee62 - 2010-04-28 10:26 AM ///realized I never wanted to be an airbrush artist again. Still good friends with the owner. I want to get a cool design with TRIATHLETE theme and have him make 20 or so.

Oh wow, this makes me think of those airbrush booths at the Illinois State Fair where people just dream up some random slogan and the artist has to bang out a design on the spot.

A very belated congrats to Ann, Wes and Ryan on their races!!  It sounds like you all had your own challenges but rose to the occasion and did great!!!

I had a race scheduled for last weekend but I had a horrible week and developed some knee pain due to not stretching for a few days (don't ask - my body has become brittle at 33).  I really disappointed myself for doing it but the way that the knee felt when I went for a ride confirmed that it was the right decision.  I just wish I had done more earlier in the year so one week didn't throw everything off.

On the bright side, I'm done beating myself up over it and my lack of training over the past few months.  I just have to take each day, one at a time, and consistently go after my training.  Much like my weight loss, I can't throw in the towel if something goes wrong and "start tomorrow" or "begin again later."  I'm also fully on the weight loss bandwagon because I think it will help with the physical ailments that always seem to pop up in my legs.

I'm pretty sure I warned you all that I am a head case so there you have it.  I'm only just now beginning to learn how not to be one.

Did you really match the car to the cat in the first photo?  I guess some people are all about their accessories!!

It looks amazing!

ironannekidd - 2010-04-27 7:08 AM Question Of The Day:

Which is your favorite event?

Which is your least favorite?

Can I do my question a day late?

My favorite is probably the swim, though the bike is pretty close.  I'm not terribly terrific at either but they seem to come more naturally and I feel like I can relax a bit when I am doing them.

My least favorite is the run.  I finally took a chirunning class during the multisport expo in NYC two weekends ago because my wife got sick of watching my grimace and fight my way through the run while everyone passing me looked like they were enjoying it.  I'm now trying to enjoy it as well.

More questions to get caught up with...

1.Did you have a an athletic background before starting this sport? If so what was it?
I did.  I was a hockey and baseball player through prep-school and was on several state all-star teams.  I played division 1 baseball in college, even after I blew out my shoulder (note, I didn't say I was any good at that point :P).  Then again, this was over 10 years ago.  After that I picked up and played around with some other sports but nothing really stuck.  After all my weight gain, I hated feeling like I did when I played new sports, especially compared to what I used to be able to do.

2. What attracted you to this sport?
The challenge of it as well as the positive benefits of conditioning, weight loss and helping to strengthen all of my broken down body parts after years of competative sports.

3. What do you like about the lifestyle?  Dislike?
Like: Doing things that are new to me and completely different than the sports I played and did growing up.  This sport is all about individual achievement and benchmarking yourself against yourself.  There is no score, no last minute buzzer beaters or a way to cheat the system by doing just enough to beat the guy next to you (well, at least for me since I am not at the front the pack).
Dislike: That I can't do just enough to slide by, like I have been able to do in the past.  I am not naturally talented at any of the sports, so it's been a rude awakening and messed with my motivation at times.  It's not always fun doing something that you aren't good at when compared to others...

4. What motivates you right now?
Weight loss and trying to become better than I am today, to prove my wife and family that I can and will do this, this Ghoulie mentor group and their positive attitudes and some of the friends I have made on BT.

5. Is there anything you would have like to learn earlier?
How to push myself consistently day in and day out.  The cost also could have been less downplayed, though I do like my toys.

wmcgee62 - 2010-04-28 10:11 AM That's Great. Is swimming your best part of the TRI?

perhaps least-worst would be more accurate, lol, but yeah. always felt more confident & coordinated on the water than dry ground. I have no qualms flying off an 8-foot drop in a white-water kayak, but still can't fly down an hill on my bike without a death grip on the brakes (tho I'm getting better, and figure with only 3 decent road rides under my belt, it can only get easier!!!).

you gotta just take small steps, set easily attainable goals, keep moving forward & accept that it won't go the way you plan - only way it works. I've lost 61#, with another 9 to go, and have had a couple of knee surgeries & countless chocolate chips to contend with along the way. i accept that it's a journey, not a destination (jeez that sounded incredibly hallmark-ish), and that anything i do is better than nothing. i'm sure that my weight issues contributed to my knee pain, but also wish i'd seen the ortho & PT sooner vs. later. o well - another lesson learned.

as for the head case...hell, i'd think we've all got to be of that ilk to at least some extent with the lifestyles we have.......!

No, not really.  There are a few local "long course races" Ill probably consider before an actual HIM.  My goal right now is to get in as much training and as many sprints as I can this summer.  Ending the season with a comfortable olympic finish.  Then Ill get serious about picking a race for next seasons HIM distance.  I've got some serious training to do!  Id be glad to keep each other in check.

Any reason you don't fill out your training log?

Have not got comfortable with throwing that out to the world. I don't look at others training log cause we talk on the forum about any issue. I believe (dont know as a fact) the logs dont tell the whole story. You are the second person to mention that , so maybe I need to reevaluate.   I have some serious training to do as well.  I need to update my race log  3 sprints, some 10ks runs and Oly tri,  with a marathon in Oct.

Doing more this wk than i did last wk is a big motivator for me.  Plus, knowing you guys can see what Im doing, or not doing, fuels me big time.   How can I act like a sissy about how bad my swim was in a race if I know everyone can see that I only trained twice this month.  Honestly,  I train to fill out my BT training log.  Is that weird?  Great, now Ive noticed another obsession.  Seeing my graphs grow...........
Im still ashamed of the volume of my Workouts.  Esp when I look at Wgraves log!!  Good lord Man!!!  He makes me not want to find my keys so I have to ride home from work everyday.  Just so my log will look like his!

Very impressive Bill.   I am missing something though. I am following the plan from the Triathlon class I took here at the Y.  Most weeks I am doing more than the plan, then every 4th week I go on call and my training suffers tremendously.
