abake - 2012-01-18 6:23 PM Wow, I'm in awe of all the good workouts and weight loss going on here. My schedule has been hectic at work, so haven't been able to get my swimming in this week, but running is on track.

Me too!  I kept putting off my swims as well due to life/school/pure laziness.  If I had a lot of workouts to do a week, I tend to miss out on the swims.

Today was my bleh day. I'm just gonna write it off. It happens. Life gets in the way. I normally experience one of these (or two) a month. You just move on, and do the best you can! :-)

Hey Marla, I just realized that your from DC area. My cousin is sponsoring a team in the Reston Century and i might do it this year? Have you heard of this event? Is it hard core? He tends to under estimate bike stuff and him and his friends drop me on trails with mountain bikes every time I am there. Not looking for that on the roads down there.....

Morning gang!

Had a good (for me) swim this morning.  Starting to make some serious progress, which makes me want to go more often.  Having a pretty good week of training.

What do the rest of you guys have going on today?

One other thing while I am thinking of it, Saturday I am flying to the Grand Caymen for some meetings (I know, tough assignment, but I should also get a nice oportunity for an open water swim).  Any how, I am not sure what the internet capabilities or costs are going to be, so I may disappear until the following Wednesday.

Congrats on the swim progress Ken...Got in a small run yesterday along with some weight training this week and core workouts daily..The head cold has attack me again so trying to be smart about but keep moving as well...

Previous weigh in 1/1/11 185 12% body fat

1/18/12 weigh in 195 12% body fat

I was disappointed that I haven't lost weight however most of it was muscle so I'm happy with that..I adjusted my calories to 2100 daily 40%protein 30%fat 30% carbs to see if I can get the weight to come off..I would like to get to 170 so I have a ways to go..

We should all be praying for Ken on his tough upcoming meetings in the CaymensLaughing.  Have fun and enjoy your open water swim.  Just kidding, I can't imagine having to travel as much as you.  I don't know if I'm getting any faster but my swimming is feeling much better after joining as Master's class at the beginning of the month.  I've never been involved with anything like the Master's class and was curious about a few things.  Everyone has been real nice and I've enjoyed it.  But I'm swimming in the first lane and having to swim around the others.  I don't want to jump ahead of myself and asked to moved up but it sure would be nice.  I have to stay after and get some extra yardage in because it seems like we miss a lot from having to wait on everybody else in  the lane.  Is this something where you ask to move up a couple of lanes or are you asked by the coach to move up?  I don't want to step on any toes and I certainly still have a long way to go.  I just feel like I would do better if I was in a lane where I could be pushed rather than being the one that is trying to push.  Most of the people in my lane have been there a while and are happy with where they are and that is great but i want to get faster.  Just not sure how this is suppossed to handled in the Master's classes.

Some travel is good, (like this one) some not so good.  It all works out though!

As far as masters goes, when I go to mine (I don't go too often anymore as they dont start till 8:30 at night and the Y pool is new).  Our group doesn't have lanes by pace or ability, usually there are only 1 or 2 of us in a lane so it doesn't matter.  So I can't offer any direction on what standard protocol is.  I would however suggest that there isn't anything wrong with discussing with the coach or manager of the group about what is the propor protocol for moving up.

I do agree that part of the benefits of the masters is being pushed, rather than falling into a comfortable pace while swimming on our own. I know that I am swimming better, but part of my success this morning was from the 2 triathletes in the next lane that swam just a tick faster than me.

~Hello and Happy New Year!~

...yes, that's how long I have been abscent from posting!  The good news is that I have pursued and secured a *New Job!* and I will be starting Monday January 30th.  There were undercurrents of layoff's at my current job and I was grateful to "jump ship" before being effected by resource changes.

Training has been consistent... and while I am quite excited about the tiny gains I am starting to see (and losses as in "weight! - down 17lbs since IMFL 2011")... I still battle waves of uncertainty with respect to doing well in my next Ironman Event (IMCdA - June 2012).

I will catch up on the posts and send your all individual inspires!  More soon!

Great job on the weight loss Carla!   I am sure the uncertainty you are feeling is normal - but I think you will seriously kick in CdA!

Ken I will think of you next week soaking up the rays as I huddle in negative degree temps (seriously it hasn't gotten above zero in a week!) - Have fun!

Don't know a thing about it but can ask around...have a friend in the Reston tri club, but he's so hard core I wouldn't even ask. Have you tried posting a query in the VA state forum? I'll see what folks I know have to say, but please bug me if I forget to tell you what I find out.

I'd ask the coach, exactly as you put it... in my experience, the nice/decent folks certainly don't want to get in your - or anyone's - way and won't mind, and the pissy people who get hung up on that stuff aren't worth worrying about, as long as you're nice about the whole thing (and it sounds like you are). Nothing wrong, too, with asking folks if they'd mind if you move ahead on the next set, though to let you know if you're getting in their way. You can also just pop into the next lane - or whichever you think would be a good fit - and ask if it's ok for you to insert yourself there, and ask folks to let you  know if you're slowing things down.

Glad you're feeling some benefit ...and agree that being in a lane where you're pushed a bit is optimal...

Good for you on the swim...don't know if I'll ever get in the volume to see real noticeable gains myself, but I've always been a swimmer so  I can live with that.

What is this "swimming" thing you all speak of?? Wink

One of these days I better find my way back  to the pool.  I am not dedicated enough to get up in the early morning  in the dead of winter to hit the pool and with all the swim lessons during the day and early evening, it makes it hard to find a lane to swim in until the late evening. Not a reason, not to swim I know.

Happy Friday (almost) everyone!

Carla, the past doesn't dictate the future if we learn from it.  You have valuable information by being an Ironman and then having issues on one too.  That puts you ahead of the game for your next one.

The mental game:  If we aren't taking a rest day every week like clockwork, we set ourselves up for overall fatigue and negative thinking. At least one day routinely, no workouts at all. Rest days are not light workout days.  They are complete rest.  My coach got that into my head early on.  Friday is my rest day.  We do a date night, movie and dinner.  Great way to keep the home fires burning and the support network happy.

There are great books out there for positive self talk.  Check out Terri Schneider's Triathlon Revolution which devotes a portion to the topic. She also has another book on the topic that I haven't read.  Long distance triathlons are a joy, but they also give plenty of time beforehand to let fear take hold if we let it and to let negative thinking take us down during it.  There are workouts for the brain.  I use them a lot.

Have a great weekend!

today is weigh in day for me.  Up .2 pounds from last week. Overall loss 4 pounds. I have found that it has been dificult to lose the weight the last  few weeks as I am not getting in the cardio and resulting 500 avg calorie burn I was used to before the boot. Weights are great but they definately don't burn as many calories! I will have to hit the pool again tomorrow to try to negate some of the weekend excess.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!!!

Robin, I feel your pain.

This week has not been a good one for me.

Time to get back to eating healthy and exercising.  Tomorrow is my swim class, I always get a good workout there.  Missed it last week due to an ER visit for my husband.  Kidney stones, ugh.  Fortunately he's doing better and life is getting back to normal.
