Extreme Veteran 603 Glasgow, UK | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up I use myfitnesspal.com as a tracker for diet, it's got apps for most mobile devices which means you can quickly track while you're on the run. You can set your own targets so if you're aiming for high protein low carb etc. then you can add that in and it's really effective at giving you the bigger picture of what you're taking in and in what proportions. Last week I was in Basel (Switzerland) for 3 days with no time to train, this week I'll be in Nottingham and Geneva so again hampering the training. I'm currently on a train to Nottingham and hope to get in my long run when I get there. This weekend I've been out on a run (PB/PR for a 5k!) then went on a 37 mile bike ride. The coach said that my riding was a revalation and that he was very impressed with my strength, control and climbing so that's a real bonus. On the downside my hip was quite painful after the ride, my shoulders were sore and are still like that and my hands were aching during braking and gear changing at the end of the ride so: - any ideas on the hip pain (it's only the right hip, feels almost internal, sciatica like), what to do about it and how to avoid it? - will the shoulder pain and hand pain go away with more time on the bike? I want to make sure that as I increase the training load I don't start getting injured. The other thing I've been considering is whether I should be looking at Tri bars or is that too far at this time? Any thoughts appreciated. Slayer - what's the Birmingham course like? In terms of making it then it would be my first Olympic and I want to make sure I'm not over stretching as I've got another at the end of July (it'd be great to meet up though!). It's only 50 miles from my parents to definitely an option. Hope you're all having fun. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Damn you guys are hitting some highs and lows but you are doing the work as much as possible! Well done guys.. Hoale-again, fit is more impt than price or bling. If the bike fits and you can afford it, then go for it. Buying local gets you free service in most cases and it sounds like good value for a clutch bike if you can afford. Here is the link Kate: http://www.fun2tri.co.uk/birmingham/index.htm I tried to get the JrSlayers in the race but no go. Some line about this being the first ever and the city hesitant due to the 17 year old drowning in the lake a few years ago. 16 and older only. As they would say over there, BUGGER! May try that app for diet but things are going well without it. I'm down about a stone in 2 weeks and saw Leeds' own Kaiser Chiefs last night on a salad and no booze. Really strange but liberating... Opening band was the transfers from San Diego. Kind of hard indie Ashley. Kate, whats your thoughts on the reason for the pain? You reckon it was just training load, or was it fit? Could it be both? Today I made it through a longer brick in decent shape. Loving that ucan generation clean carb fuel! I see on fb that Ashley kicked butt this weekend. Peter is back from holiday and his feet are a bit better he texted. What have you all accomplished? |

Extreme Veteran 603 Glasgow, UK | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Slayer - It's a shame you can't be there for the Trentham one instead (same organisers), they would probably have let them do that one - that's on the doorstep practically for my Mum and Dad. The hip pain thing is something I've had before, tends to come from more intense training, I had it when I did the marathon but not in the 20 mile training session. It's possibly an over training thing. It's subsided now but it anyone had ideas on what it might be I'd welcome them. |

Extreme Veteran 465 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Happy Tuesday everyone! At least it's not Monday. MY weekend turned into a bust. I ended up having to work all day Saturday and some Sunday, missing out on my long Gaps ride. I heard it was a good time but pretty brutal. I was able to get in a long-ish run on Sunday. I have a pretty easy week but capping it off with the Atlanta 13.1 on Sunday morning. Temperatures are looking like they are going to be pretty warm which doesn't help me out at all. I don't really have a time goal for the race. I am pretty much just going to use it as a gauge of fitness. After that it is really time to buckle down and start focusing on Eagleman. 3 months to go as of last Sunday. Hope everyone's weekend training went well. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Silverback: Here are some links I found really helpful. I am now down 13.5 lbs in about 2.5 weeks. And my training is going super. http://www.health24.com/fitness/Diet_Supplements/16-481-512,73175.asp http://running.competitor.com/2010/10/nutrition/become-a-fat-burning-machine_8244 Kate: Missed it by just a bit. Maybe Trentham next summer! Now I need to find my wife some Wimbledon tickets for our 20th anniversary. As to your hip, if its overuse, you know the answer. Less use. Build up to 20 milers more evenly and I bet you will have less hip pain> Aren't I daft? Sorry but that one seems pretty obv. However, take note, that most folks are sore in the hips and joints when doing 20 milers even with a bigger base than you! Ice baths like Gladiator said seemed to really help... Scotty, bummed you missed gaps too. perhaps you and I should go up there and suffer together to prove our manliness? Hows everyone doing? injuries, training? We have some races coming up! Lets hear your race plans etc. |

Master 2094 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Sat is my first sprint this year in Parris Island. My swim is pretty good and my bike has been coming around. I am pretty much screwed on the run. My Plantar Fascitis has finally settled down but I am afraid to try and run on it. My first run in a couple of weeks may be my warm-up at the race. I am considering a run tomorrow but may stick with a bike/swim |

I can share the book (it's in PDF format) with anyone that wants to see it just let me know your emails and I will email it to you guys. Been injured with PF now for 3-4 weeks and I am hating life. Been biking and swimming more to try and compensate but haven't been able to run which is killing me. Sorry I've been absent from this board but been on the GA forum regulary. Thanks Edin |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up you and Peter dealing with that PF. Darnit! try some superfeet insoles? that helped, along with reduced training load, and softer running surface. def against rolling and stretching your foot! |

Veteran 189 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Yeah never had this injury before and it is just frustrating. Haven't tried the insoles yet but I did order a brace that you sleep with that stretches your achilles and foot. A lot of people suggested that so I will see how that goes. I'll give it until this weekend if it doesn't improve next step is insoles and then doctors office

good call on the short break Ashley! Get well.
Peter: the boot stretched my foot out (not to mention it was uncomfortable as hell). by stretching it out, like the PT exercises I was given, it just irritated my foot and further inflamed the problem area. I was rolling on a tennis ball too. heck i tried about anything the get my PF to go away. the best things I listed and icing. |

You can't make a living or have happy patients suggesting RICE(rest, ice, elevation) but it tends to work. To be financially successful you need a gizmo, fancy name and a marketing dept. Veteran 189 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Yeah been hiding all over the GA forum but not on here. I got caught up some today. Hoping to catch Slayer on a bike and a swim this weekend or Friday. Hopefully get to try out my new wet suit. Also bought bunch of groceries that will slowly get me geared toward the right track as far as my nutritio is concerned. Going to follow MET for few weeks to see what it does. |

I don't think that is bad advise at all. I'm planning to finish the race Sat and then just run through it. I'm just laying off of it now because I don't want to wake up Sat and not be able to run. Like you said it gets better after the first few minutes of running but the next morning is excruciating. I know Sunday is going to be bad. When you say switched shoes, was that the same model and brand but new or a different model/brand? Kinvaras? |

Veteran 222 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up I've been mia for the last week or so. Work is getting in the way as usual. Achilles issues have also slowed me down a little, but starting to pick up the running again. First race of the years is in 10 days (Around the Bay 30K). Last year had to bail at 15K due to gastro issues. This year is hoping to be ok and complete the distance. Will take it as it comes due to the Achilles, but you never know. Hey Gladiator, how did the Marathon go? Or is it this weekend? |

Extreme Veteran 465 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up My plan of attack for this Sunday per the coach: First 5 miles mid Z3 then upper Z3 to low Z4 for the duration. Trying to save some energy for the hills on the back half of the course. IT's a very easy course to go out too hard on which results in some serious suffering. No real time goal. Just going to follow the plan and see what it gets me. |
