Oh, I'm sorry, I'm totally off my pity pot now. I just have this great URGE to go out and do huge things and it isn't happening as fast as I want. I could get more creative and figure all this out. My biggest fault is I don't ask for help. Not even from the man upstairs. And I have to change that because there are gonna be times that help is needed spiritually or otherwise.

I'm challenging myself to doing some heavy duty MENTAL training this week. Got most of my CD's today in the mail and will start using them, especially with headphones as I drift off to sleep. They are ocean waves, so not very exciting to train to, but I might try that, too. I'm going to write affirmations until my hand cramps and keep quieting those voices that try to bring me down. And I'm going to visualize myself getting stronger and faster every day with less effort needed to do so. And visualize finishing the tri's, runs, century ride and marathon and feeling as euphoric as our guys today--ready to take on the whole bloody world single handedly!! And I'll squeeze in some training, even if it is the boring old get up at 4 am and train on the bike indoors followed by a treadmill deal. Now to manifest a swimmer's treadmill that I can afford, so I can quit going 45 minutes away to the Y!

I did a tri at the gym 20 laps to the letter J in the alaphabet, 6.2mile bike and a 2.6 mile run It took me 1hour 32 minutes and 55 seconds, including fast changing in locker room, which was the talk of the gym for the entire weekend. I had 2 lockers one for regular and one for tri. I thought I picked a quiet corner for speed. When I did the transition there were 3 other women there and I came flying in changed quickly and out but I didnt time the transition, the whirlwind flurry and out I ran, No running the attendant shouted, oops. The second transition was walking from stationary bike to treadmill. When I first started running I almost fell, I was holding onto the monitor and one arm. My shoes were too loose, because I slipped them on instead of tying them. Next time during transition I will untie them and spend a few seconds tying them. I am slowest and awkward on the run, any suggestions would be greatly appricated on running breathing.

^Amen, sister!! J--you kicked redbike Hope you had the post-tri euphoria!! You earned it.

Kanders--I'm glad you found a chiro to fix you up when you wreck it with training. I'm wrecking my body, but am finding it very hard to make time to see my chiro. I think it's been about 6 weeks now. I just keep trying to patch myself up here and there where I can reach! I'm not sure what he means about the place near the shoulders. Haven't treated enough runners, I guess. But I spose your rib cage will expand as your lung capacity increases. And a massage now and then would really help keep the intercostal (rib cage) muscles loose, too. One of my patients used to run in high school and she said she was being fitted for a bridesmaid dress and she had to increase 2.5 sizes because she kept expanding her rib cage as she trained for track! She lost weight, but grew muscle and expanded lungs. Pretty cool running physiology, huh?

BGT--Where are you???? Everything going okay? I'm worried! Or do you have some good news for us?

Anyone know what happened to Mike Hall??

And I think Monkeyboy just likes to live up to his name--pop in here and there and monkey around with the thread and disappear.....

CMCKEE--men are bizarre creatures from another planet sent here to amuse and confuse us. We all know women rule the planet. We just put up with the silly oafs because they have penises that some of us are addicted to. Plus, they are cute. And some of them can fix stuff, which is very nice and worth keeping them around for. (okay, I'm gonna get some hate mail here---you all know I'm kidding, right?) Keep up the good work, girl

Hi

I would just like to say how shocked and saddened we are to hear of the tragedy in Virginia.

Sad news indeed.

Re: training partners - don't know how you do all you do with no help.

And that's why, provided I have no interruptions and I'm in the right frame of mind, exercising becomes spiritual for me. It's just you and the world, and it's a great feeling. Sunrise on your face during a morning run, an afternoon bike ride through farm country speeding past the cows and horses, the sound of your own breathing in the swim. There comes a point where I'm just not thinking about anything, and its a great feeling. Completely clears your mind.

Not that I wouldn't mind someone to chat with on a long run. Could be amazing company, and from past experience, you do get to know each other well over the course of a summer. But go with the wrong person, and it can be intolerable.

Impressive job. How'd it feel to push yourself?

You have to take the time to tie your shoes. It's worth it, and take your time putting on your socks and (if its an outdoors tri) removing the sand, pebbles, grass from your toes, too. Otherwise, you'll have to stop during the run, or worse, run in pain. Who needs that agony?

Your running will develop with practice, so keep running. Start out slow until your legs lose the wobblies, and then pick up your pace and finish.

I'm jealous of your effort here. I've been wanting to do a "personal tri" for weeks, but haven't had the time to get it in. It's a great feeling to have accomplished it, isn't it?

Well, it's a Tuesday morning here, and what was going to be a difficult week became more difficult yesterday and then suddenly much easier for the remainder. Which means, if I'm lucky and motivated, an opportunity for some serious physical activity. I haven't run in days, and I need to get in the pool. As for diet, let's just say it's been bad. Specifically, if I saw it, I ate it. And since I'm not 20 anymore, I really should pay more attention to what I put in. I become lethargic and grouchy when I eat poorly and don't exercise.

So as I sit here with my morning coffee, I'm planning my week, trying to schedule in a few swims, a long run, and if the weather ever breaks, a bike ride. And I'm making a date with my scale for Sunday morning. Anyone else want to eat better and weigh-in with me?

This reminds me of a question I have. Yesterday I was in the doctor's office for a test and was waiting for-ever, so I did some mental imagery exercises. I imagined myself going all the way through the tri - every transition, every leg. As I did so, I came up with a couple of areas where I'm not quite sure how it's going to work...

In T1, if you don't wear socks and have your shoes clipped into the bike for the mount (I may try this, but I'll practice it a lot first, if I do), how do you keep from having junk on your feet from running the bike to the mount area? I get that you'll dry them off, but I'm picturing that as being a rather hurried affair. The first race I'm doing has transition on grass, so it may not be too bad.

Coming into T2, if you do the "ride on shoes" dismount, how do you keep your shoes from banging all over the ground as you run your bike in to your transition area? Do you carry your bike to keep them from hitting?

I'm probably going to get some Yankz or other quick tie laces, as the laces on my new running shoes are quite irritating - not straight, but all in and out wavy (so as to stay where you put them better, I'm sure, but they're really hard to tighten this way).

prof, only this morning was I rueing the fact that since getting off the couch twelve months ago I have lost, precisely, no weight at all. Yeah. Go me.

I have, on occasions, lost a bit, but then it goes straight back on.

As of yesterday morning I was 15st 3lbs (213lbs) and 29% of that was fat which, as I am only 6', is not a good thing.

So I am in and if anyone has any tips (Sean, you are a god for dropping that weight in such a short period of time and with only one knee) I would love to hear from you.

Toodle pip and tally ho.

Interesting topics; and yes Mark, the Virginia incident was in my mind all day yesterday while I was in the ER taking care of people with little cuts and bruises and thinking about how minor they seemed compared to what the students were dealing with in Virginia

Training partners: I actually have a friend who really wants to be my training partner. I told her about the race I wanted to do and the training plan I am doing an welcomed her to join me on any workout. She then read about the race and tryed to convince me to do a different one because she is worried the water will be too cold and she doesnt like wetsuits (??). Im still doing my race. We have tryed to get together for workouts but both are schedules are difficult. This past 2 sundays we did get together and I found I am actually more fit than she is right now and I was slowing myself down to stay with her. At the end of this last workout, which was a brick, I finished the bike ride at My speed and hurried to transition to the run, thinking I would just meet her back. She kind of got upset that I wasnt waiting for her and almost left after the bike ride. She said whats the point of working otu together if we arent together. I decided to run abit and then circle back and get her, and tryed to explain Im just compettive with myself and want to make every workout my best. I really like her as a person but I think I might be with the Prof on this one, I find a sort of mental clarity when Im training by myself and It all can be on my terms. I also like just meeting someone to do a workout, doing our own thing, and then having coffee together after. Its more like a motivational factor to get there, but I dont need to be talking while iM doing it.

Oh-i just realized im late for a fundraising breakfast, i better go! I have more to say though, Ill be back

Mark--I'm totally sympathetic here! I've gained almost 9 pounds! I tell myself it is muscle weight, but the fancy scale with the bioimpedence to measure body fat does NOT show a decrease in fat So, I tell myself it is still muscle because I look leaner in the mirror and my pants fit looser in places, except my thighs are getting huge and they don't jiggle as much. So there. Then I weigh in again and all my wind goes out of my sails. So, quit weighing in. Just trust that you are training so hard that it is ALL going to muscle. And relax about it. Who cares? You stud, you. Bet Satan still thinks you are hot And she likes it hot, or so I'm told, meaning about her name.......

Or, you can suck it up and do the recording EVERYTHING you eat, no cheating, on fitday or something like that and see how your numbers add up compared to energy expended. And, one of my patients yesterday told me about a book by Kevin Trudeau that is about resetting the hypothalamus (which controls thyroid and adrenals among other things including METABOLISM). It's a diet that supposedly only folks in ENGLAND know about and you are supposed to lose a pound a day and keep it off, as you've fixed your metabolism with it!!! As soon as money comes in to justify it, the book is MINE!!! Want to test drive it with me? Anyone else in??? (she says eyeing the chocolate donut, salivating, and then deciding on the carrot juice--eew). Maybe a hypnosis for weight loss next????? Or maybe SEXERCISE??? It's supposed to be quite the calorie burning activity I think we should add it in as the fourth event in the Quadrathon!!! Dare you to post your times with THAT.........(longer times=better!)

I should have clarified that this is exactly what I've got with my two training partners, and I don't think I could stand the type of thing that you're talking about, watergirl. Adding that emotional component would turn me off completely. For me, I've got a woman who's training for the same event that I meet once a week at the pool - I'm giving her a bit of a hand with structuring her workout, we talk while we get ready and between sets if we have time, and when we are leaving - more motivational than anything else. We don't do the same workout.

Then on Fridays, I meet another friend at the Y and we've just started running on the Y's outdoor dirt track (about .55 mile loop). She runs with me for the first 2 miles, and then I keep going and she peels off. We hook up inside and do weights together, if we can, but no pressure if either of us wants to do something else, or gets there early or late - whatever. It's very low-key and nice. She's not training for anything in particular, but she's got loooong legs and helps me pace faster.

I'd like to hook up with some group rides so that a) I learn how to ride in a group and b) I can watch other riders and learn some technique.

Ha ha ha... Yeah, I do have some good stuff. Red Bull, Diet Coke, and CLIF bars.

No comment on the hands, knees, or submissive poses.... I will only get myself in trouble. ;-) But the voices in my head are speaking dutch and are suggesting all kinds of things.

At least I didn't have to climb over logs and boulders like Malph did. He's an animal !!!

I actually have a bit of a training partner I meet up with at the gym.  Its more of a social 'hello' and odd chat and then we go on to do our own thing.  He runs for 10mins to warm up then goes off to do weights while I run/cycle the whole time (I do weights at home).  Its good to have someone to chat with once in a while, but when you are seriously training with a race goal, your pace is very specific to you and you don't want to wait up for anyone or do anything that is going to hurt your results.  Its just good to use those rest/recovery days to do an easy bike ride with a buddy or as I know Prof loves to do, go for a long walk with the mrs.

I have been doing a lot more research in regards to my diet lately in an effort to improve performance in any way I can.  For starters I am throwing flax seeds in almost everything now.  Also, any type of berry I can get in me is good (mmm smoothies).  I've also been trying to get a lot of protein in my diet these past few weeks, but am reading that protein is a fairly poor source of energy, and that I should stick to loading up on carbs for my workouts, but keeping protein levels fairly high for building muscle.  Too many carbs or fats just results in excess in sugar levels, and it gets stored as fat.  Protein however does not store as fat once your body has used what it needs, and eventually is voided.  The acids however are not gentle on your kidneys, and cause problems, so its good to make sure you are not getting too much.  ,

It's hard to make a total diet change and watch every little thing that goes into you, but if you try to focus on say 10 foods, (flax, berries, whole grains, almonds etc) and just try to fit them into as many meals as possible, I think the benefits will be noticeable.

Bah, off to work.   2 weeks left and I am sooo out of there.  I have a race on my 2nd last day there in the morning, then work at 3pm.  I plan to go in without a shower or change.  Yes I am a rebel without a cause.

Sean, you nut! Glad to see you are still on your tri high! We haven't heard this much from you---ever! I'm on here all the time, so that tells you that most of the time I'm on this giddy post exercise elation kick, too! Dontcha just LOVE IT???

Rob, I'm a rebel, too. But I dunno about not showering.....you might want a recommendation letter or something.....and if I didn't shower, well, it just wouldn't be pretty. Go fix your email now, because it won't let me send any more to you, as you are "temporarily over quota" or whatever.

Team in training sent my fundraising packet today, so I'm all excited about that. Only a group like this would understand the giddy delight of such a challenge. Not only do I have to train REALLY hard to run the marathon, but I also have to raise money for the privilege of doing so!! And I'm HAPPY about it. Yep, I've finally lost my last cookie.......

Nothing fancy on the page yet. I'm still trying to figure out what picture to post and what on earth to write to entice people to send money on my behalf. It's really not in my nature to ask such things......

I am really impressed that most of you have more than one race coming up.
I did this one to see if I could and to get a time to see if I can improve before the real and longer tri. The run feels so different on a treadmill compared to running outside on ashphalt.
I ll take the outdoors anytime as long as it's above 40 degrees. Theres more to look at and distract you and its more interesting.

Wow, family reunion time today.

Thanks, Prof and Watergirl, for pointing out the flip side of training partners.  I just always felt I made it too much of a solitary thing if I was actually going to compete, but maybe that's good.   Puts me in mind of Woody Allen:  "I practice a lot when I'm alone."  lol

Prof & Mark - I'll weigh in with you Sunday - Monday a.m. is my week end weigh in usually, but I'll do my best.  I have, all deference to Sean, started not just eating clean, but counting calories in/calories out - guess I'm at that point.  I still have 5.5 # to lose definitely, and would like the wiggle room 10# would give me.  Hard to do when putting on muscle, as Phoe says.  I'd like to break through 130 this weekend - it's taken me, like, 7 weeks to lose the last 2 dang pounds.

And what's next for you Jeanette?  Running at the pool, tsk.  Wedgies?  LOL

Where's BGT, anyway?  I've tried to roust her on her blog, and no joy.
