Way to go Bob!  So glad you all did well!!!!

Stupid new job.  No BT for me during the day.  But I DID make an awesome liquid vitamin energy drink today.  They taste AWESOME!

So...I'm not sure if I've asked this before or not, but if I did, I don't remember the answer. Anyway, the girl I've been working out with, along with some of her classmates, are trying to convince me to train for a marathon with them during the offseason. The race is in Feburary. I looked at Hal Higdons training plan and it's possible for me to progress up to 26 miles from my current 3 if I start after my last scheduled race of the season.

Would this be a good use of my training time during the offseason if I incorporate biking and swiming at least once a week? Or would I be pushing myself too hard??? I'm not real sure what the offseason is supposed to look like.

The half mary seems a little more do-able right now considering that I've never been a runner before! The full scares me a little bit!

I like marathon training during the winter... even though there are some significant reasons why its not good.  Marathons are hard and the training is very time consuming, but personally, it gives me something to focus my energy on and keeps me training.  I plan to do 2 more marathons over this winter and come off of them with tons of running fitness for next years tri season.  However, that plan isn't for everyone... I have some significant pull from some people that say DONT DO MARATHONS because they are just to hard on your body.  But I need the challenge... I'll go crazy just sitting idle.

I am going to train for my marathon over the winter for the same reason. This summer has been so humid, I could not imagine doing twenty mile runs....Oprah did a marathon...its possible.

I am all for people who want to train for a marathon, as long as you go in knowing what you are getting yourself into.  Marathons are HARD!  They take a lot of training and are extremely hard on your body.  Both the training AND the race itself are very draining physically and mentally.  Be ready for that... and be smart about your training.  Have fun, but collect as much information as you can about how to train properly.  As much as I love BT and the supportiveness of the community here, there is a lot of misinformation posted on this site so be careful about what you read.

Regardless, have fun with it.  Train smart, race fast, and have the time of your life!

So how many of you kids plan to run a marathon (or half marathon) during the off season?  Lets get some commitments posted up here...

I, triOK, commit to running 2 more marathons this off season.  While its not set in stone yet I plan to rip Vegas apart on December 2.  My other race is yet to be determined.

Wait a minute.

If you do an Ironman, don't you have to train for a marathon as well? Doesn't an Iron man end with a full marathon?

Ironman does end with a marathon.  Have a look at those training plans if you want to see some major commitment!

I, Bob, commit to encouraging any and all who want to run a marathon, and congratulating you all on a job well done for the effort and commitment - whether you finish or not! Smile

(Marathons are not for me!)

Sorry Robyn but I am with Bob on this one.  I like my knees just the way they are.  Maybe a 1/2 marathon someday when I can find the time to train for a 1/2 Iron.

That sounds good!  I don't know what my training will look like in the winter, but I'm thinking of lots of swim drills in the mornings.  There are some treadmills at work as well that I can use.  I hate the thought of the stationary bikes, so I'll get some kind of trainer.

And maybe even a tri-bike! Smile

Still have a sprint and an olympic to do this year, but for next I'm planning on mixing some sprints and olympics and possibly get do an HIM by September.  That's the plan at least!

I, Kristen, one of the slowest runners on BT, will commit to training in a way to avoid injury and increase my speed so I can run 10min miles by the spring.

I am starting to get worried about the 'off-season' and what to do to stay in shape, and improve (i.e. not gain back the 50 pounds), until the weather warms up again.  Here in the pacific northwest the gray sets in about Oct 1 and leaves about July 5.  (More weather whining from me, yes.)  I am probably going to buy a bike trainer and hope to keep running outside, and my sister has an indoor pool. . . . so I can try to piece workouts together.  I am hesitant to join a gym since I find I don't use them as much, but maybe now that I am a triathlete.....hmmm.

Have any of you used the BT training plans in the winter?  What did you think?

I think I'm gonna try for the half-marathon in Feburary in Austin. Kinda scary still, but here's my formal commitment:

I, Erin, commit to training for a half-marathon in Feburary and finishing the race alive!

Who knew...I hated running 6 months ago(still not a huge fan) and now I'm going to train for a half marathon! Crazytown! This is definately a new lifestyle for me!

Oh and by the way...everyone take care of themselves and listen to your body. My husband's foot started hurting the other day and he didn't do anything about it. It continually got worse...thank goodness he works with an orthopedic surgen, the doc looked at it and hes got a stress fracture in his foot. Hes in a walking boot for 6 weeks and his season is over. So just a word of caution, becareful!!!

Season's not over, just making plans for the winter.  Your's goes a lot longer in Texas than it does up here.  I'm going to AZ to do one in October!

I think a marathon over this winter would be a little adventurous for me, but I might could swing a quarter marathon. I would also like to ride a metric century before the start of next season.

I also have to announce that I am a . Yes, I know, it is hard to believe! I stopped by Wal-mart yesterday to look for a cheap watch I could use to count laps with in the pool and track time. I could not find cheap so settled on a Timex that was $50. Then I proceeded to leave it in the cart when I loaded up the truck. At least hopefully someone is enjoying my new watch...

In the frozen tundra up here, we have a winter racing series called the FREEZEROO. It is pretty cool, and when I don't have to drive 2 hours to be with my kids I am going to do those events, eyeing the spring marathon. I need to lose about forty pounds in the middle.

Firstriguy and I are also eyeing a ROUGH adventure race in the Southern Tier next summer...I will post the website if I can find it, but it is running, biking, swimming, canoeing, orienteering, and more running. Good thing he was a NAVY SEAL and can carry me......

For all of us nutritionally challenged individuals, I was referred to a great site by Wendi (G8RSAX). It is called fitday.com. It is FREE and it will keep track of everything you eat - calories, fat, protein, sugar, etc. It has all brand name foods in the database and is very user friendly. Check it out. Then you can check me out with my new FL GATORS hat when I smoke Wendi in our own weight loss challenge!!
